Breaking the cycle of poverty: 11 graduate from Decatur's ‘Pathway of Hope' program
Pathway of Hope is personal for many as they earn recognition for completing a series of services through Decatur's Salvation Army. Of the 11 who graduated on Thursday afternoon, several didn't think they would ever reach this point.
Patrick Hahn was once battling a drug addiction and alcoholism. He was in and out of prison several times, until he said he reached a point of knowing 'I can't do it on my own. I need somewhere to go.'
That's when he found himself at the Salvation Army, working with Andrea Lewin, a case manager.
She brought the Pathway of Hope program to Macon County in 2013, helping 426 people so far.
'I've had people with bachelor's degrees, people who have been homeless with children, people who need housing and jobs,' she described.

She wants the community to know her door is open to talk, learn about resources and get in touch with emotions. Of all the moments and interactions with clients, Lewin said graduation day tops her list of 'rewarding moments.'
'I get to see the process of someone having hope, who didn't have hope,' she said.
90% of those who start the program without homes end with stable housing. 88% achieve employment goals by the last day.
Hahn is a perfect example of that. He once never imagined being employed, but is now a professional custodian with Quality Plus Cleaners in Decatur.

Following graduation, Lewin will check in with each client every three months. She and her team are also gearing up to help dozens of others reach their dreams in the future.
'It touches my heart. That I can develop a relationship,' she said. 'It's not just a client. It's a person, a human being. It's their feelings.'

EVANSVILLE — School will be starting up in August for kids in Evansville, and community organizations are stepping up to make sure families have the supplies they need. Here is a roundup of community supply giveaways and back to school events. Restore Outreach - July 19 Restore Outreach will hold a back-to-school event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at Delaware School. The event is open to all students in pre-k through high school. There will be free backpacks, school supplies and food until organizers run out. Salvation Army - July 19 The Salvation Army will host a supply giveaway from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at their 1040 N. Fulton Ave. location. Children must be present with their supply list. There will also be haircut vouchers and other resources. The event will be while supplies last. North Haven General Baptist Church - July 19 North Haven General Baptist Church will hold a back-to-school event July 19 at 3 p.m. at 1800 Haven Drive. There will be a school supply giveaway, free food and inflatables. River Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation - July 26 River Bend Nursing and Rehabilitation will hold a back-to-school event from noon to 3 p.m. July 26 at 3400 Stocker Drive. There will be food, games, prizes and more. KK's Hair Today Salon and Barber - July 28 KK's Hair Today Salon and Barber will host free haircuts for kids from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 737 North Park Drive. Backpacks 4 Good - July 29 Hensley Legal Group will host Backpacks 4 Good from noon to 2 p.m. July 29 at Lincoln School at 635 Lincoln Ave. There is a limit of one backpack per student, and it will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pre-registration is not necessary but recommended. Those who preregister will be entered to win a pair of Colts tickets. Preregistration does not guarantee a backpack. Walk in the Park shoe fundraiser a success
The inaugural 'Take a Walk in the Park' was an incredible success thanks to the spirit of generosity not just from the people of Medicine Hat, but throughout the country. A spiritual sibling to the Coats on Finlay event in the winter, the event asked for residents to stop by Riverside Veterans' Memorial Park, either to donate used pairs of shoes that were still in good condition, to pick up a pair that they might need, or both. 'The community has just once again shown that they turn up and they support. We have all varieties of shoes. They've been arriving since mid-morning and the afternoon, and we have lots of people shopping. We've had families come in,' said Helen Snortland, who organized the event alongside Kym Porter. Porter estimated they received at least one thousand pairs of shoes, both over the course of the day and in donated pairs given to the organizers prior to the event. At the time of the interview, most of the paths within the park were lined with shoes, varying from steel toed or winter boots to high heels and sandals. Porter and Snortland expressed gratitude to everyone who participated, both locally and those from Calgary and beyond who donated shoes or money to the cause. They said they were not surprised by the turnout, they were delighted. 'It feels marvelous that we live in a community that wants to help their neighbors and their fellow community members out,' said Porter, who attributed the success partially to drawing on the same community spirit as which makes Coats on Finlay a success every year. 'What else I think helps with this response is that it's only one day,' said Porter. 'So we have things that we collect and we keep and we say to ourselves that we're going to take it down to the thrift store or the Salvation Army, but we keep putting it off. But when it's specific to one day, it seems to motivate people to do this now, because there's no other day to do it.' Any of the shoes that remained after the end of the event will be distributed to various organizations throughout the community, explained Snortland, such as the Health Foundation, and potentially the Mustard Seed, with a majority being gathered for the Lion's Club International Foundation's Soles for Souls program. The Lion's Club organization's program will ship the shoes where they're needed throughout the world. 'We really just want to thank the community,' said Snortland.
