Sky Sports News star confirms exit after 23 years as Chris Kamara sends message
Football broadcasting veteran Alan Myers has officially confirmed his departure from Sky Sports after 23 years at the channel. Myers first broke the news of his decision to leave back in May.
The reporter was predominantly situated in the North West and North East during his spell with Sky Sports News, covering Manchester City, Newcastle, Liverpool, and Everton. His exit is just the latest in what's shaping up to be an exodus in a summer of change for the broadcasting giant.
On June 30, Myers took to X to announce his farewell to fans, writing: "Last day at Sky Sports News today! Always difficult leaving the safety of what you know but change is something to embrace, as they say 'don't lose tomorrow by reaching back for yesterday' it's been a total pleasure working at Sky, now for new challenges as a freelance Journalist."
A flurry of well-wishers followed in the comments, including from Sky Sports and Brentford legend Chris Kamara who said: "Good luck to you Alan". Just prior to the Premier League season concluding, Myers revealed on social media that he had made the call to walk away from Sky.
"After a 23 year association I have decided to leave @SkySportsNews," he wrote. "The Channel has given me so many great moments, some tough days too but most importantly many great friends and colleagues. It's been an absolute privilege to be a part of the journey, and what a journey it was!
"I want to say a huge thank you to all of those that have helped me from when I joined in 2002, right up to today, and there's still a couple of big stories to cover for me in my final weeks.
"SSN has taken me to over 30 countries, World Cup finals, ECL finals and so much more, places as far and wide as Indian to Israel to South Africa, I've been so privileged. So many great stories I've been lucky to work on and people I've been lucky to interview, and of course work with some amazing colleagues #blessed."
His post was accompanied by photos of some of Myer's most memorable moments working for Sky including an infamous meeting with controversial former Liverpool owner Tom Hicks.
He also posted an image of an interaction with legendary boxing promoter Don King, a snap of him reporting late into the night on transfer deadline day, as well as being present upon Michael Owen's unveiling at Newcastle United in 2005.
Myers joins a host of stars who have left Sky in recent times. The shockwaves sent by the exit of Soccer Saturday's Jeff Stelling at the end of the 2022/2023 have continued with channel alumni Geoff Shreeves, Martin Tyler and Bianca Westwood all following in recent years.
Guy Havord, Dickie Davis, Greg Whelan and Jaydee Dyer were also affected by the cuts. Rob Wotton, senior reporter Melissa Reddy and presenters Teddy Draper, Paul Gilmour and Jasper Taylor are also leaving the channel this summer.
Kamara meanwhile stepped down from his role on Soccer Saturday at the end of 2021/22 football season after working on the show for 24 years. Sky have insisted the large scale cuts are not a cost-cutting measure however.
A Sky Sports News spokesperson said: "We've shared proposals with the Sky Sports News team to change how we're structured, aimed at making us more agile and better equipped to serve audiences across TV, digital and social. A small number of roles are impacted, and we are now entering a period of consultation with those colleagues."

Manchester United tracking Valencia midfielder but face competition
Manchester United are tracking Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra, but are not the only interested party and he is not set on leaving his current club. The 22-year-old has been a regular in the Valencia team over the last two seasons, already racking up 85 appearances for the La Liga side. The central midfielder was part of the Spain Under-21 side at the recent European Championship, scoring in the 3-1 defeat to England in the quarter-finals. He has also trained with the Spain senior squad. His performances for club and country have caught the eye, with multiple clubs linked with a move for the rising star. Italian publication Calcio Mercato report that Manchester United are 'close' to a deal for Guerra, although Spanish outlet Tribuna Deportivo reports that nothing is agreed yet. Valencia are planning to offer Guerra a new contract and he is waiting to see what the terms of that deal are before making a decision on his future. The Tribuna Deportivo report states that the midfielder wants to stay with Valencia, but they will clearly have to make him a competitive offer. Calcio Mercato previously reported that AC Milan are also interested in Guerra and have made contact with Valencia over a possible move. However, he is not their prime target for central midfield, with Bayer Leverkusen's Granit Xhaka at the top of their shopping list. Atletico Madrid are also fans of Guerra, making a move for him last summer which was unsuccessful, but their interest remains. Guerra is one of a number of players Manchester United have an eye on this summer, with the priority seemingly to strengthen in attack. Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, while a move for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo is proving difficult to secure. More Trending Two bids have already been rejected by the Bees as the Red Devils fail to meet their £70m valuation of the Cameroon international. Talks continue and their is optimism that an agreement can be reached as Mbeumo is keen on the move to Old Trafford, but progress is slow. Departures are also proving tricky to achieve, with Manchester United wanting to get rid of a number of big names who have fallen out of contention under Ruben Amorim. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony are all on the transfer lift, but it is difficult to find clubs willing to pay significant fees for them and to offer them the wages they receive at Old Trafford. Mikel Arteta warned about two 'problems' with Arsenal signing Martin Zubimendi
Mikel Arteta has been warned that new signing Martin Zubimendi may not be a ready-made fit for Arsenal's midfield. The Gunners finally confirmed the long-awaited signing of Zubimendi on the weekend, with the midfielder joining from Real Sociedad for £51million. The Spain international turned down a move to Liverpool last summer and attracted interest from Real Madrid, but has instead chosen to join Arsenal on a five-year deal. Zubimendi is expected to be thrown straight into the heart of Arsenal's midfield, especially following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho at the end of last month. However, former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robson is concerned that his former side may have overpaid for Zubimendi and fears the 26-year-old may not possess the range of passing to help break down stubborn defences. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'He plays the holding role and he'll keep the ball quite nicely, but I've done commentary on La Liga and I'll have a little joke about how many times he's going to pass it forward. 'He hardly ever passes it forward – there's no penetrative or goalscoring passes, he just keeps the thing flowing. 'There are lots of players who can do that, and you're paying a lot of money for a player who can just keep things moving along.' Concerns were also raised about whether Zubimendi could adapt to the fast-paced nature of the Premier League, with former Liverpool player Steve Nicol unsure if the Spaniard will be able to cope. 'If you're going to let Odegaard and Rice get forward, you know they are going to pen teams in,' Nicol said. 'The biggest problem Manchester City have got is when teams get out, you don't have anyone in the middle of the park to stop them. 'I don't see how this guy stops them. He's not quick around the field and that's my problem.' Will Martin Zubimendi be a success at Arsenal? Robson, meanwhile, added: 'He's no more athletic than Jorginho is and he certainly won't be as good defensively as Rodri. 'In my view, if you're going to be a holding midfielder – even if you are good on the ball – you have to be a good athlete. More Trending 'You have to cover full-backs and midfield players who have gone forward, you might have to drop in between your centre halves at times, and I don't see him doing that.' Arteta, however, is convinced that Zubimendi will only add to his side's quality in the middle of the park. 'Martin is a player who will bring a huge amount of quality and football intelligence to our team,' he said. 'He will fit in really well and he has all the attributes to be a key player for us. 'The standard he has consistently performed at over the last few seasons for both club and country is exactly why we are so excited to have him with us. We all welcome Martin and his family to the club.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
