Big year ahead at Assiniboia Downs
Assiniboia Downs kicks off its 68th live race meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13, and the horses and their handlers are champing at the bit to get into that much-coveted winner's circle.
The 50-day meeting will offer racing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and selected Mondays (June 2, June 23, July 14, Aug. 4, Aug. 25, Sept. 15) with a post time of 7:30 p.m. until October 8. And two of the most popular handicappers on the internet, Kirt and Stretch, will be back with their ASD Live Show picks and analysis beginning every race night at 6:45 p.m. on the ASD YouTube Channel.

The highlight of the meeting will be the $125,000 Manitoba Derby sponsored by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, which takes place on Monday, Aug. 4, as the first leg of the Western Canadian Derby Series, which offers a $100,000 bonus to any horse that can sweep the Manitoba Derby, the $200,000 Canadian Derby at Century Mile, and the $125,000 BC Derby at Hastings Racecourse.
Seven races have been carded for an opening night that starts with the Don Gray Memorial as the first race, recognizing one of the classiest trainers ever to race at the Downs, and ends with a tough allowance/optional claimer featuring last year's Gold Cup winner Magic Tiger, trained by Wendy Anderson. The seventh race also caps off the popular $1 Pick 4, which begins the season with a $25,000 guaranteed pool.
Magic Tiger would prefer to run a lot further, but the rare back-to-back Gold Cup winner has to get started somewhere for trainer Wendy Anderson, who has one of the largest stables on the grounds in a year when the battle for the leading trainer title looks wide open.
Last year, Lee Delaronde won the title after taking over the conditioning of leading owner Henry S. Witt Jr.'s stable from Jerry Gourneau. This year, Delaronde is training nine horses, while Gourneau remains in the U.S. with Witt's horses. In the absence of Gourneau's traditionally large stable, numerous other trainers have packed their stalls with 20 or more horses including six-time leading trainer Tom Gardipy, Jr., Jared Brown, Carl Anderson, Steve Keplin, Jr., Mike Taphorn, Mike Nault, Lise Pruitt, Devon Gittens, and Sherri Laing.
2024 leading rider Prayven Badrie has returned from Trinidad to defend his title, along with all of the top 10 jockeys and more from last year, including 2024 runner-up Damario Bynoe and three-time champion Antonio Whitehall. That trio will be joined in the jocks' room by Ronald Ali, Rachaad Knights, Renaldo Cumberbatch, Dane Dawkins, Neville Stephenson, Sven Balroop, Arthur Budhu, Shavon Belle, Dario Dalrymple, Douglas Badaloo and a host of new apprentices.
Bettors will once again be looking forward to the huge pools that are a result of the Downs growing its audience to include punters from around the globe in the United States, UK, Mexico, a number of countries in Europe, and also Australia, where ASD racing will be offered by Sky Sports. The Downs live race presentation that is broadcast around the world is considered to be the best of its kind, and it shows in the wagering. The Downs has also partnered with Travel Manitoba to showcase their product in two 30-second commercials around the world.
Winnipeg Jets Game Days
On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop.
On the home front, the Downs continues to attract customers with free parking and admission, great food (which can now be ordered via Skip The Dishes), numerous events, and Family Fun Nights every Tuesday in July and August (and on opening night). New for 2025 is a customer rewards program named ASD Advantage, which complements their rewards program already in place at HPIBet.com, by measuring and rewarding attendance and repeat food and beverage purchasing. The intent is to personalize the customer experience while rewarding loyalty to the facility.
There will be three Manitoba Night Market events at the track this summer, featuring more than 100 local companies, along with other events that include Ribfest from May 23-25, Food Truck Battles on May 31 and June 1, Rocking & Wrestling on June 28, and PizzaFest on July 4 and 5. It's amazing how many racehorses have found other careers after retiring from racing, thanks to Final Furlong, which is a member of the Horse Aftercare Alliance.

La Barrière Park unveils new cricket pitches
All coaches, athletes and fans of one of the fastest growing sports in Manitoba were winners on Saturday at the unveiling of the province's 'epicentre of cricket.' La Barrière Park is now home to three regulation-sized cricket pitches, practice cages and shade structures. 'Sports like cricket bring so many people together. If you come to watch the play here you'll (hear many accents),' said Bhavana Bonde, a cricket enthusiast and landscape architect from Architecture49, the Winnipeg-based firm tasked with designing the project. Bonde said the park is being frequented by cricketers who are South Indian, Punjabi, Australian, Carribean Islanders and New Zealanders, among others. The community of local cricketers is far more organized and larger now than it was when she first moved to Canada from India more than 25 years ago. The Manitoba Cricket Association's registration has quadrupled over the last four years. Its 2025 roster includes 72 competitive teams, up from 18. Equipped with bats, balls and matching uniforms, competitors from across the Prairies descended on La Barrière Park, a 323-acre site just south of the Perimeter Highway, for a long-weekend tournament. The North-West Cricket Club was founded in Manitoba in 1864, several years before Louis Riel is credited for launching the Red River Rebellion. Riel and other Métis leaders constructed a successful barrier — the namesake for the new cricket venue — in 1869 to protect their land from the government of the day. 'Cricket has been played in Manitoba now for over 150 years. Over 150 years!' Lukes told the grand opening of what she called 'the epicentre of cricket in Manitoba.' Multiple city councillors spoke about fielding complaints from residents about cricketers transforming parking lots into cricket pitches due to the lack of designated facilities for athletes. MCA president Paramjit Shahi said his goal is to develop a fourth pitch on the grounds of La Barrière Park and install an irrigation system, bleachers and floodlights. 'This is just a start,' Shahi said, adding he wants to bring in lighting so athletes can compete into the early hours of the morning. As is, it remains the biggest outdoor cricket facility in western Canada, he noted. Weekday Mornings A quick glance at the news for the upcoming day. There are currently outdoor fields in Assiniboine Park, the Maples and Waverley West. They host approximately 400 formal games every year, combined. MCA is actively lobbying politicians to support the development of a pitch in Portage la Prairie. Players from Winkler and Brandon currently drive to Winnipeg to play, Shahi said. 'This is one of the reasons I'm staying in Winnipeg,' said Milan Dave, a cricketer who is originally from India, gesturing to the new field he competed on Saturday. Take Tom Charge the horse to beat
The 77th running of the $125,000 Manitoba Derby highlights the biggest race night of the year on Monday, Aug. 4 at Assiniboia Downs. If current live crowds are any indication, this will be a grand night for horse hawks and people watchers. The fans have been coming out in droves in July and the parking lot looks like a throwback to the '70s, or the '60s. If you were one of the kids running around picking up tickets off the tarmac in those decades, you'll know what we're talking about. I know I was. The crowds have been loud too, but nothing like they'll be on Monday night when the races kick off at 7:30 p.m. for a stellar card of seven races, bolstered by three stakes featuring the best horses on the grounds. The $50,000 Harvey Warner Manitoba Mile goes as the wide-open fifth race with 10 rivals trying to beat favourite Judo, who has won five in a row for leading trainer Steve Keplin, Jr. The Manitoba Derby goes as the sixth race on the card and is led by Derby Trial winner Take Charge Tom, who outgamed fellow derby entrant Just Trust Me to win the $50,000 Derby Trial two weeks ago for trainer Robertino Diodoro, who holds the record for the most Manitoba Derby wins with four. One of the top trainers in North America, Diodoro conditions Take Charge Tom for his longtime owner Randy Howg. Diodoro and Howg teamed up to win the 2016 Manitoba Derby with Inside Straight. Interestingly, Howg and Diodoro also teamed up to win three stakes with Take Charge Tom's dam, Gorgeous Ginny, before Howg bred her to multiple Grade II stakes winner Tom's d'Etat, the mating that produced Take Charge Tom. Take Charge Tom is the logical Derby favourite based on his connections, class, and race record, having won three stakes including the $125,000 Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland Park at the Manitoba Derby distance of 1 1/8 miles. If he brings his A game there might be no stopping him, but that's why we run horse races, and seven rivals think they can beat him on Monday. Lined up to face the favourite, who drew Post 7, from inside out are: 1. Border Song, a shipper from Alberta for trainer Robert Van Overschot, who won the Manitoba Derby in 2021 with Uncharacteristic; 2. Acknowledge, who was competitive against some classy rivals at Churchill Downs before arriving in the barn of trainer Wendy Anderson, who won rare back-to-back Gold Cups here at the Derby distance of 1 1/8 miles with Magic Tiger; 3. Mr Jaws, a fresh Texas claim for five-time leading ASD trainer Jerry Gourneau and perennial leading owner Henry S. Witt, Jr., who teamed up to win the Manitoba Derby in 2023 with longshot Mano Dura. Next we have: 4. Attack, who had been testing very tough horses at Gulfstream Park and Keeneland before arriving in the barn of top Alberta trainer Craig Robert Smith; 5. War Is Hell, a Derby longshot that finished third in the Derby Trial for trainer Jason Homer, whose horses have been outrunning their odds all season here; 6. Maldini, who was routing successfully at Woodbine before being claimed by top local owners Arnason Farms, Olsen and Cristina Belle, and moving to the barn of overachieving local trainer Lise Pruitt; and 8. Just Trust Me, a game speedster who finished second in the Derby Trial to Take Charge Tom, and who has been pointed to this race since this winter by his stakes-winning connections, trainer Dewey Williams and owner Eugene Burns. They all have reasons and dreams, some of which bettors will be hoping come true in the huge multi-race wagers, which require you to pick the winners of consecutive races on one ticket. The Derby evening card includes a $100,000 Guaranteed $1 Pick 4 Pool on races 4-7, and a mandatory payout on the 20-cent Jackpot Pick 5, which runs on races 3-7 and features a carryover pool of $465,217 that is expected to grow to between $1-2 million by post time for the third race. If you're the person holding the winning ticket on the Jackpot Pick 5, you get the whole pool. If there is more than one winning ticket holder, you split the pot with them. When the favourites don't win the races that make up these multi-race wagers the payouts can explode, and in the case of the Pick 5, you can bet a ticket for just 20 cents. Better odds than the 6/49, too. There will be money and horses flying everywhere on Derby evening, along with a chance to win a $100 wager on a Derby horse, a history display from ASD historian Bob Gates, and family fun like bouncy castles, face painting, and entertainment for the youngsters. Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026. One of the reasons that Turner was displaced by New York City FC's Matt Freese at the U.S. starter at goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in June and July was that he hadn't played consistently at the club level for France's Lyon. Turner, 31, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup. Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016. He last played for New England in 2022, posting a 53.3% save percentage over five starts.
