GAA clarify full-time score in Tipperary-Kilkenny semi-final after confusion over scoreboard error

has issued a statement clarifying the final score of Sunday's
All-Ireland SHC
semi-final, revising the official score to:
Tipperary
4-20
Kilkenny
0-30.
The final score was initially given as 4-21 to 0-30 but has been amended as Noel McGrath's 70th-minute effort had been incorrectly awarded as a point.
'The GAA can confirm that the official score at the end of the Tipperary v Kilkenny GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final was 4-20 to 0-30. The GAA acknowledges there was confusion over the final score. The CCCC is awaiting the full referee's report in order to establish how the initial mistake occurred,' a statement from the GAA on Sunday evening read.
McGrath fired over a shot just as the clock struck 70 minutes, his effort greeted by cheers from the Tipp fans on Hill 16 but the umpire on the near post waved the effort wide.

However, the scoreboards in Croke Park all updated to include McGrath's point, showing the score as 4-21 to 0-29 as the game entered the first of four added minutes.
Coming seconds after Oisín O'Donoghue's late goal, Tipperary also made a substitution at the same time in a chaotic period of the game.
Believing they were four behind, Kilkenny immediately went in search of a goal. In the next attack Eoin Cody tried to burrow through for a green-flag despite an opportunity for a relatively straightforward point.
Jordan Molloy took a point in added time to reduce to gap to three points as per the scoreboards in Croke Park but really two points in light of the error. In the dying moments Kilkenny continued to try force a goal they thought they needed to level the match rather than picking off points.
Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng raised no issue regarding the confusion after the game.

RTE Sunday Game pundits weigh in on Kilkenny v Tipperary 'ScoreGate' controversy
There was huge confusion at the end of Sunday's epic All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship semi-final between Kilkenny and Tipperary. The Premier County advanced to the All-Ireland final after a 4-20 to 0-30 victory over the Cats at Croke Park. Liam Cahill's side will face Cork in the decider on Sunday, July 20. However, the game wasn't without controversy as a point was awarded on the scoreboard to Tipperary late on after a Noel McGrath shot went wide. This left Kilkenny thinking they were four points behind when really they only trailed by three. Former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins explained on RTE's The Sunday Game: "It all came down to Noel McGrath's point. At that stage, Tipperary, you could say, had 4-20 on the scoreboard. They were three points clear. "Noel gets it and swings it in. Everybody thought at the time it had gone over the bar. The umpire on the left of your shot there has put his hand up to catch the ball, which did confuse everybody. "So, the umpire positioned on the right as you look at it. The ball hits the net and he puts his hand up. You can see clearly that the ball was wide. "I think Noel didn't dispute it either at the time. But watch the umpire, puts his hand up to catch the ball. Everyone thought it was over the bar. But clearly, the umpire had waved it wide." As Kilkenny attacked in the remaining minutes, they were clearly looking for a goal, something which Joe Canning says they might not have done if they knew they were only three points behind. The former Galway star said: "They thought they were four points down at that stage and psychologically, that's huge. Because then you have to obviously get a goal and a point or whatever you need to get back. "And in the last couple of minutes, they were going for goals. And even at the time of the day, I was like, I think they're two points. There was a little bit of confusion all over. "But when you're two points, or if it was three points, and Jordan Molloy got a point to bring it back to two, but it was only three that the players thought. "Psychologically, when you're on the field and you're watching the scoreboard late on, and it's three points, you're thinking goals. But if that was two points, you tap one over, and then you try and win the puck out, tap another one over. "So definitely for Kilkenny's players, like you know, when you're chasing a lead down the stretch, psychologically, two points is way different than three points." Limerick's Tom Morrissey added: "Even their first attack after that Noel McGrath incident, Eoin Cody had definitely an easy option, just tap it over the bar but probably felt they were four points down. "They're not going to get four points, maybe with four minutes left on the clock so he's trying to force a goal instead. "And that kind of sets the tone for the next few minutes. They're hunting goals instead of tapping it over there quickly, and it's back to a two-point game with three minutes left. "And you can definitely get two points in three minutes."
