
The High Life: Carmelo Anthony Debuts New Cannabis Brand ‘STAYME70' At The Travel Agency's Fifth Avenue Store

Last week (April 17th), The Travel Agency, New York's premier cannabis destination, teamed up with 10-time NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony to celebrate his debut cannabis brand, STAYME70. In celebration of the launch and the 4/20 holiday, Anthony made a public appearance at The Travel Agency's Fifth Avenue location to meet fans and debut his newest venture.
While at The Travel Agency, the New York Knicks legend met fans, who gained VIP access – including autographs and photo ops – through purchasing the debut collection, while enjoying The Travel Agency's fan-favorite DJ series Airwaves.
'It's a legendary moment in cannabis history to welcome Hall of Famer and New York icon Carmelo Anthony to The Travel Agency,' says Paul Yau, CEO and co-founder of The Travel Agency. 'As the first adult-use dispensary on Fifth Avenue, we've always aimed to set the standard, and this moment not only celebrates Melo's entry into New York cannabis, but also cements New York's place as a global leader in the industry.'
STAYME70, pronounced 'Stay Melo,' was made in partnership with renowned cannabis entrepreneur Jesce Horton and award-winning creative director Brandon Drew Jordan Pierce ('Beedy'). The partnership between STAYME70 is a natural extension for both brands, with both carrying core missions of bringing social equity into the cannabis industry, prioritizing working with BIPOC-owned businesses, and reinforcing the commitment to social justice and economic empowerment.
Carmelo's visit drew hundreds fans to The Travel Agency's Fifth Avenue dispensary. The event was part of The Travel Agency's 'High Neighbor' series –a 4/20 celebration reimagining suburban nostalgia through a week of immersive, neighborhood-driven cannabis experiences.

Why Black entrepreneurs flock to Martha's Vineyard every August
Martha's Vineyard has long been a summer vacation destination for Black families, but August in the Massachusetts beach community is becoming an important hub for Black entrepreneurs, investors and financial firms, too. "I would say the magic of it is really about introducing your network to someone else's network," said Calvin Butts, founder of East Chop Capital, a private equity firm named after a neighborhood on the island. "We found great success raising capital there, we've had our portfolio companies speak as well, we've done very, very well with deal flow." A wide range of companies including Disney, Cisco, Goldman Sachs, McDonald's, Google, Ford, Mckinsey and CNBC parent company Comcast are hosting or sponsoring business-focused events on the Vineyard this month. The Black Economic Alliance is hosting an event called "The Gathering," bringing together corporate leaders to discuss ways to help increase the opportunities for Black employees and companies. "The Vineyard is a spot to capture an audience who wants to have an intellectual and financial conversation about how to uplift Black culture," said Melissa Bradley, general partner of the BEA Venture Fund. Martha's Vineyard became a popular vacation destination for Black families over a century ago with the opening of the first hotel that allowed Black visitors, Shearer Cottage, in 1912. Since then, Black families have bought homes and created a community centered around the town of Oak Bluffs and Inkwell Beach, a name that is a nod to the segregation on the island in the past. This year, clothing brand Ralph Lauren released its Oak Bluffs collection looking to recognize and capitalize on the history and prestige of the island that hosts visitors like Michelle and Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Spike Lee. Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, CEO of Ebony Magazine, is hosting an event with the founders of Black-owned spirit brand Uncle Nearest and said she sees the vineyard as a way to bring the history and the future of the magazine to life for its target audience. "For EBONY, being present on the Vineyard in August is both strategic and personal," Sklenar said in a statement. "It's an opportunity to connect with a powerful cross-section of our community, deepen meaningful relationships, and position the brand not just as a cultural icon, but as a modern business driving impact, visibility, and growth." Donae Burston, founder of La Fête du Rosé, said he also sees tapping into the culture of the Martha's Vineyard community as an organic way to grow sales among a consumer base that aligns with his marketing as a luxury brand. "For us it would mean so much to have the acceptance of people in Martha's Vineyard," said Burston. "Being able to go to Martha's Vineyard and focus on [high-net-worth] individuals from all over the world who appreciate wine — It's visibility, it's helping them become evangelists to go back home and spread the gospel." For four generations, Erin Goldson and her family have spent summers in Martha's Vineyard. This year she is launching a new event called the "Vineyard Icon Awards," sponsored by Diageo and Estee Lauder. The honorees are business and political leaders who are helping to shape August on Martha's Vineyard as a place where culture and commerce meet. "Over the last five or so years, a lot of companies are realizing that there is a wealth of successful, accomplished, driven Black professionals, who decide to come to the vineyard in August," Goldson said. "You can come to the vineyard for rest and relaxation," she said. "But every year here there is also a growing legacy, where Black ambition and aspiration are celebrated in a very unique way."

Anaheim finally has a bookstore that ‘feels like home'
The crowd inside the Untold Story in Anaheim was ready for open mic night to begin last week, but there was no way it would start on time. Whenever owner Lizzette Barrios Gracián tried to approach the podium, someone pulled her away for a hug. A congrats. A recommendation. A thanks. The bookstore opened last year in an industrial part of the city so isolated that 911 dispatchers couldn't find it when Barrios Gracián called about a medical emergency. Though it quickly earned a loyal following for focusing on BIPOC books and allowing activists to meet there without having to buy anything, the location wasn't working, and Barrios Gracián was ready to close what had been a longtime dream. Then she found a better, if smaller, place in a strip mall near downtown, within walking distance of her home. The Untold Story reopened a few weeks ago, and this was the first open mic night at the new spot. 'Oh my god, what a difference location makes,' Barrios Gracián told me as people kept filing in on July 25. 'They're coming to hang out, they're coming to buy, they're coming to organize, they're coming from across the country.' Among the customers she talked to that day: Toby from Florida. Nick from Kentucky who lives in Utah. A group of teenage girls in town for a water polo tournament. Anton Diubenko of Ukraine, who was in Orange County to see a friend and told me he visits bookstores around the world. 'This one's really nice,' Diubenko said. 'If I was a local, I'd come here every week.' Barrios Gracián finally reached the podium. She was 20 minutes late. No one cared. 'Thank you muchachos!' the 52-year-old said in a loud, warm tone that hinted at her day job as a history teacher at Gilbert High in Anaheim. 'Bienvenidos to our new location of the Untold Story, Chapter 2! Your job tonight is to support, clap and give lots of love.' Over the next two hours, the audience snapped their fingers, applauded, hooted in approval or nodded as speakers poured out their proverbial hearts in English, Spanish and Nahuatl. Local political blogger Vern Nelson tickled out on his electric keyboard the Mexican children's tune 'El Ratón Vaquero' as adults and teens alike sang and clapped along. Every time someone went up to perform, Barrios Gracián sat in their seat, because all the others were occupied. 'The greatest success of this bookstore,' she said in closing, flashing a smile as bright as her gunmetal gray hair, 'is uniting all of you.' Although the night was officially over, no one left. They wanted to exult in the moment. Vivian Lee, who organizes board game get-togethers at the bookstore through her role as community engagement coordinator for the Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance, said that 'welcoming spaces' can be hard to find in her native city. 'People like Liz are just so incredible,' said Lee, 30. 'She's game for anything that helps community.' Paola Gutierrez teaches monthly bilingual poetry classes at the Untold Story. 'When I first asked if she could sell my book, she said not just 'Yes' but 'We will promote you and help you,'' the 47-year-old said. 'How can I not say I'm free for whatever you need?' She pointed at a massive couch and laughed. 'Liz needs me to move this freakin' thing again? Let's do it!' I visited Barrios Gracián the following day when things were chiller. The Untold Story's design is bohemian Latinx. All the fixtures and artwork are donated, including bookshelves, massive mirrors and a bust of the Egyptian goddess Isis as well as a replica of the Titanic above the used fiction section. Insulation peeks out from sagging ceiling tiles. A stand next to the gift section offers free toiletries and canned and dried food. 'We're going through hard times,' Barrios Gracián said as Argentine rock gods Soda Stereo played lightly from speakers. 'I can't give a lot, but I can give.' How did she think open mic night went? 'It was very successful for our first time here,' she responded. 'You never know if people will follow you when you move.' A customer walked in. 'Hi, welcome!' Barrios Gracián exclaimed, the first of many times she would do that during our chat. 'Don't shy away, you don't have to buy!' Born in Guadalajara, Barrios Gracián came to Anaheim with her parents in the 1980s without papers, eventually legalizing through the 1986 amnesty. A bookworm from a young age, she found her 'safe space' as a teen and young adult in long-gone bookstores such as Book Baron in Anaheim ('I loved how disorganized it was') and the bilingual Librería Martínez in Santa Ana. When the latter closed in 2016, Barrios Gracián vowed to open a version of it when her daughters were older. In 2021, she launched the Untold Story as a website and a pop-up, aiming to eventually open a storefront in her hometown. 'Anaheim is nothing but breweries,' she said. 'That's the teacher in me. There's nothing cultural for our youth — they have to go to Santa Ana to find it, while [Anaheim] lets gentrification go crazy.' Rent proved prohibitive at most spaces. At others, prospective landlords would offer a lease only if the Untold Story dropped its books on critical race theory, which she refused to do. 'Those are the untold stories,' Barrios Gracián said. 'Anaheim needs to hear them. Everyone needs to hear them.' She greeted Benjamin Smith Jr. of Riverside, who had read the previous night and was returning now with his poetry books. 'I can sell them, but we should have an event just for you, because people like to meet the author of the book they might buy,' Barrios Gracián told Smith. He beamed. 'Liz gives people chances,' Smith, 68, told me. 'I'm no one famous, but look at me here now.' Barrios Gracián is keeping her job at Gilbert High, where she also heads the continuation school's teen parent support program. At the Untold Story, she wants to host more author signings and launch an oral history project for students to record the stories of Anaheim's Latino elders. 'We're in a crucial moment where our stories must be told from the past,' she said. 'Ellos sobrevivieron, también nosotros [They survived, we can as well]. It brings hope.' One thing I suggested she work on is the business side. The books are ridiculously affordable — used copies of a J. Robert Oppenheimer biography and a book about the rise of Nazism in L.A. before World War II set me back $11. Barrios Gracián's training consisted of a free entrepreneur course through the city of Anaheim, a video by the American Booksellers Assn., talking to other bookstore owners and Googling 'how to open a bookstore.' She laughed. 'I tell my students we learn by falling and then getting back up,' she said. 'If I can make money, it would be great, but that's not the point here. Might sound crazy for business people, right?' The numbers are thankfully going 'in the right direction,' said the Untold Story's manager, Magda Borbon. Barrios Gracián was one of her favorite teachers at Katella High School, 'so now it's time to pay it back' by working at the store, she said. Like me and too many other Anaheimers, Borbon moved to Santa Ana 'because I didn't see myself culturally in Anaheim. Now I do.' Barrios Gracián excused herself to greet more customers. I walked over to a table where a group of women were painting book covers as part of their book club. It was everyone's first time at the Untold Story. 'This is very much an extension of Liz,' said Angela Stecher, who has worked with Barrios Gracián before. 'She's been talking about doing something like this for years, and it's wonderful to see her do it.' 'This is like something that you'd see in San Francisco,' added Maria Zacarias, who grew up in Anaheim and now lives in Santa Ana. 'You go to a bookstore, you feel like you can't touch anything because everything is so neat,' said Liliana Mora. She waved around the room as more people streamed in. 'Here, it feels like home.'

Rebecca Roland The restaurant at the Getty has long been one of the better museum dining options, but it didn't feel like it took full advantage of its settings. The dining room and patio, overlooking the rolling hillsides, are both stunning, but there was just so much untapped potential with the Getty's stone-laden plazas. It seems like the Getty may have been thinking a similar thing, because the latest addition to the museum is an outdoor restaurant and bar right at the top of the colorful entrance steps. Trellis Bar & Lounge serves an easygoing menu of dishes like Thai mango summer rolls, taquitos, and a mezze platter, alongside wine, beer, and cocktails. Rebecca Roland As much as I envy those who can luxuriate over a mid-day chopped salad and glass of wine, lunch, for the most part, is a meal of utility for me. If my refrigerator is running low on leftovers, I'm often looking for something easy and affordable (and can be eaten at my desk). One of my go-to options is gimbap (also spelled as kimbap), preferably with tuna. I've picked up rolls from all across LA, but one of my recent favorites is from the Kimbap in Koreatown. For less than $15, the Kimbap gives you two hearty rolls that can barely be contained by the takeout container. Matthew Kang Mei Lin's sophomore effort in Los Angeles (we'll consider her casual restaurant Daybird more of a 1.5) comes in the form of 88 Club, a striking, moody affair with just a few dozen seats and an almost secret side lounge for cocktails. The entire look and feel are incredibly lovely, well-detailed, and luxurious, like a high-end restaurant hidden away in a Singapore or Bangkok hotel that only the well-heeled know about. Thankfully Lin's restaurant, a partnership with restaurateur Francis Miranda, is easy to access right from Little Santa Monica in Beverly Hills. The service is polite and helpful without being too much. In fact, 'not too much' could be the theme here. All the dishes are balanced and refined to a near razor's edge, meant to delight without pizzazz. Lin herself said the menu was 'no thrills' and 'what you see is what you get,' and I'm perfectly fine with that in an age when we've moved beyond rainbow bagels and Instagram bullshit. Starters are modest and refreshing, like a dressed chrysanthemum salad or mung bean jelly noodles. Singaporean fried noodles don't carry the heady spices of something in a hawker center, but doused with Lin's chile oil they're hard to stop eating. The shrimp toast, gorgeous and hefty in the hand, is a must-order. I pined for more of the tangy sweet and sauce sour beneath the fried sea bream, fresh herbs balancing the fish. Across the board, portions and flavors are modest but reveal layers of pleasant complexity, like the blackened edges of char siu iberico pork. I'll even swoon over the desserts, like the mango sago topped with sweet dollops that resemeble Dippin' Dots ice cream. The pro-tip here is to go with four people to reduce the costs and maximize dishes to order; we paid about $100 before drinks, tax, and tip, but the price could easily balloon to $200 a person with lots of cocktails. I'm excited to return to 88 Club and try the rest of the dishes, like the kung pao scallop, but for now, I'll happily marinate in my first visit knowing that Mei Lin, arguably one of the most talented chefs in Los Angeles right now, is back with a full service restaurant. 9737 S. Peter Quinn Since Zizou owners Maati Zoutina and Boris Macquin opened their Lincoln Heights wine bar and restaurant in 2024, it's become an LA hotspot. Head there on a random weekday to hear Chaka Khan, Afrobeat, French hip hop, or Bob Marley. It's fairly common for notable DJs to show up and show out on the restaurant's killer sound system, customized by Macquin, who was formerly a sound engineer. Though plenty hang out on lush patio, others might just create their own personal dance floor while enjoying Zizou's sights, sounds, and French or North African family recipes like the chicken tagine or Moroccan salad. Any member of the staff can make a wine recommendation, but if unsure, just ask for a glass of Champagne. Zoutina or Macquin will smile, depart, and return with something effervescent, celebratory, and delicious.
