LAHAD DATU: A 59-year-old man was arrested during Op Bakau yesterday for allegedly encroaching into the Lahad Datu Forest Reserve.
Lahad Datu Maritime Zone director, Maritime Commander Dzulfikhar Ali, said the joint operation carried out by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Sabah Forestry Department discovered that 2.02 hectares of land had been encroached upon.
'Checks revealed illegal activities, including mangrove tree logging, open burning, and the planting of oil palm, fruits, and vegetables. A residential house and a swiftlet bird nest structure were also built without permission,' he said in a statement today.
The suspect, who is believed to have committed an offence under the Forest Enactment 1968, has been referred to the Lahad Datu Forestry Department for further investigation.
Dzulfikhar said the integrated operation is crucial for protecting forest reserves, waterways, and coastal areas while preserving natural ecosystems and ensuring national maritime security.

RM2.68 million worth of logs without permits seized in Ranau

The logs seized by authorities at Kampung Rondogung in Ranau. RANAU (July 25): The Sabah Brigade General Operations Force (GOF) seized 59 logs without permits from two trailer trucks at Kampung Rondogung here, early Friday morning. Sabah GOF Brigade Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rani Alias, said both truck drivers — in their 40s and 50s — were detained for investigation following the 1.30am operation on July 25. He said the trucks, en route to Jalan Tambunan-Ranau, were intercepted by personnel from the Keningau GOF Battalion 21 and the Sabah Forestry Department Ranau team. 'A total of 59 logs were seized as both drivers failed to provide any documentation to the authorities, which is a violation under the Sabah Forestry Department's requirements,' he said in a statement on Friday. The seized logs were valued at RM1.189 million, while the two trucks were estimated at RM1.491 million — bringing the total value of the seizure to RM2.68 million. The suspects and seized items were handed over to the Sabah Forestry Department for investigation under the Sabah Forest Enactment 1968 for possessing and transporting forest produce without valid documentation.

Sabah GOF seizes illegal timber worth over RM1.1mil, two detained

KOTA KINABALU: Timber worth over RM1.1mil were seized en route to a wood factory in Ranau district. During the raid codenamed Ops Bersepadu Khazanah, General Operations Force (GOF) personnel had noticed two trailers along the Tambunan-Ranau road, near Kg Rondogung at around 1.30am on Thursday. Sabah GOF commander Datuk Abdul Rani Alias said the drivers were instructed to pull over, and inspections on the trailer led to the discovery of a total of 59 timber logs worth over RM1.189mil. 'The male drivers, aged 43 and 59, failed to produce permits for the timber and are believed to have breached the Sabah Forestry Department regulations,' he said in a statement. The two suspects were nabbed while the logs as well as the vehicles worth RM2.68mil were seized and handed over to the Sabah Forestry Department for further action under the Sabah Forestry Enactment 1968. Abdul said they believe the timber was taken from Tomani Tenom, and headed to a factory in Lohan, Ranau. He said operations against illegal logging and other crimes will be strengthened, he added. Illegal fishing: Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency nabs five Vietnamese

Published on: Wednesday, July 23, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jul 23, 2025 By: Patimang Abdul Ghani, Winnie Kasmir Text Size: The five Vietnamese nationals with their fishing boat detained. KUDAT: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained five Vietnamese nationals suspected of illegal fishing in the waters off Pulau Malawali early Monday. The seizure, including the vessel and equipment, was valued at more than RM2 million. Kudat Maritime Zone Director Hasbullah Omar said their vessel was detected at 4am 1.22 nautical miles southeast of Tanjung Bukit, Pulau Malawali, following a public tip. The patrol boat Cenderawasih 10 was immediately deployed to the location. However, when authorities attempted to approach, the suspects cut their towing rope, leaving it trailing behind their vessel and installed iron barriers on both sides of the boat while refusing to cooperate with orders to stop. 'The suspects attempted to ram our patrol boat when we tried to get closer, but their plan failed after a 15-minute chase ended when our officers successfully boarded their vessel,' Hasbullah said. Upon inspection, the vessel was found to be equipped with specialised iron equipment designed for sea cucumber harvesting. Some 40kg of sea cucumbers and 300 litres of diesel fuel were found on board. The Vietnamese nationals, aged between 28 and 39 years, were arrested for lacking valid identification documents. The suspects, vessel and marine catch were brought to the jetty for further investigation under the Fisheries Act 1985 and Immigration Act 1956/63. In SANDAKAN, the MMEA thwarted an attempt to smuggle diesel, petrol and gas worth RM830,000 to a neighbouring country by detaining a pump boat 0.8 nautical miles off Tanjung Aru, on Monday. Sandakan Maritime Zone Director Maritime Captain Muhamad Suhairy Hussain said the boat, operated by a male skipper with seven male crew members, was detained at 1.05am after the boat's navigation was detected as suspicious and heading towards the waters of a neighbouring country. 'The boat was found to be carrying 250 blue barrels containing 50,000 litres of petrol, 15 barrels containing 3,000 litres of diesel and 120 branded cylinders of gas. The skipper and crew of the boat, aged between 27 and 50, failed to produce valid travel documents. 'They also failed to produce valid declaration documents to carry the controlled goods. In addition, the police also arrested four men and two women, aged between 16 and 41, from neighbouring countries who were passengers on the boat,' he said in a statement. Muhamad Suhairy said the case was being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1962, the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 and the Immigration Act 1959/63. 'This arrest is part of the MMEA's ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and maintain the security of the country's waters,' he added. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
