Hajj: Saudi Arabia Launches World's Largest Cooling System for Pilgrims
More than 1.4 million pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj, which kicked off today.
Saudi authorities promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the success of the Hajj season amid scorching temperatures.
The newly launched cooling system has a capacity of 155,000 refrigeration tonnes, The National reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the system is set to ensure that temperatures at the mosque remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius.
These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia's 'comprehensive vision aimed at elevating the pilgrim experience and providing the highest levels of comfort and tranquility during ritual performance, especially given the potentially harsh weather conditions,' argued The National report.
Last year, Saudi authorities announced the death of 1,3000 pilgrims due to temperatures that reached 50 degrees. The number included 20 Moroccans who died during the 2024 Hajj season.
Morocco has a pilgrim quota of 34,000, with 22,400 pilgrims being monitored through official government channels and 11,600 through travel agencies.
Moroccans paid at least $65,000 to perform the Hajj this season.
King Mohammed VI last month addressed a message to Moroccan pilgrims, asking them to honor and represent Morocco's values.
'I therefore expect you to be ambassadors for your country and preserve this bright cultural image. Keep in mind that it is these incontrovertible values which have enabled our country to continue to enjoy security and stability, and to press ahead,' the King said.

A proud Berber and graduate student in Business Law at the prestigious Université Toulouse Capitole, Birouaine is the founder and president of the Association de la Jeunesse Marocaine à Toulouse (AJMT), a dynamic youth-led organization that has quickly grown into a key platform for Moroccan students and young professionals in France. From Isolation to Initiative 'When I arrived in Toulouse, I was struck by how scattered and disconnected the Moroccan community was,' Mohamed shares. 'There were no real spaces where young people could gather, celebrate our culture, or talk about the issues that matter to us. That's when I realized we had to build something ourselves.' In June 2023, driven by a sense of civic duty and cultural pride, Birouaine founded AJMT with a clear mission: to unify Moroccan youth in Toulouse, defend Morocco's interests abroad, and promote the country's cultural, political and social achievements in a spirit of openness and solidarity. A Platform of Action and Solidarity The AJMT has led a series of impactful initiatives since its creation, from organizing iftars during Ramadan and football matches, to conferences featuring important figures and celebrating national holidays in partnership with the Consulate of the Kingdom of Morocco in Toulouse. One of their standout actions was the donation drive for earthquake-affected families in Morocco, reflecting the group's deep ties to their country and their sense of responsibility. In April 2025, Birouaine and the AJMT joined forces with the Collectif des Associations Marocaines du Sud-Ouest de la France to organize the 'Marche pour la Vérité' (March for Truth), a powerful display of unity and support for Morocco's territorial integrity. 'Through this march, we reaffirmed our unwavering attachment to the Kingdom's unity and to the exceptional partnership between Morocco and France,' Mohamed says. Creating Bridges Between Morocco and France Under Birouaine's leadership, AJMT has gone beyond cultural engagement to foster political and institutional awareness. One of the association's landmark achievements was organizing a delegation trip to Rabat in partnership with the Parlement des Étudiants (Student Parliament). The trip benefited from the support of the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the Consulate of Morocco in Toulouse. The visit introduced French students to Morocco's political landscape through meetings with key figures like Minister Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid and President of the Constitutional Court Mohamed Amine Benabdallah, and included tours of the Moroccan Parliament as well as cultural landmarks across the capital. The delegation also met with the Mayor of Rabat and the Vice President of the House of Representatives, and paid a visit to the French Embassy in Rabat. 'The idea is to help young people, Moroccan and French, see Morocco differently. Not just as a place of origin, but as a modern, open, and ambitious country with real opportunities,' Birouaine says. Toward a National and Global Network With AJMT thriving in Toulouse, Birouaine is now thinking bigger. Earlier this year, he launched the Initiative des Jeunes Marocains du Monde pour le Dialogue et l'Ouverture sur la Vie Politique au Maroc, a movement aimed at encouraging political awareness and engagement among Moroccan youth around the world. As part of the initiative, he's organized meetings with the secretary generals of major Moroccan political parties, sparking meaningful dialogue between young diaspora leaders and national decision-makers. Looking ahead, Mohamed has set his sights on expanding the AJMT model across France under a new national umbrella: Association de la Jeunesse Marocaine en France (AJMF). 'We want to create local sections in cities like Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, and Lille,' he explains. 'The idea is to build a strong, united network of young Moroccans across the country who are proud of their identity and ready to contribute to their country's future.' Moroccans Spend Over MAD 15.5 Billion on Travel Abroad by June
Rabat – Moroccans' spending on travel abroad reached MAD 15.5 billion ($1.69 billion) in the first half of 2025, new data from the Moroccan exchange office has indicated. The number represents an increase of 8.2% in the first half of this year compared to MAD 14.33 billion ($1.56 billion) recorded during the same period last year. In addition, these new numbers reflect significant growth compared to the same period in 2021 and 2022, when Morocco's travel spending reached MAD 4.15 billion ($453.3 million) and MAD 7.95 billion ($869.3 million) during the same period, respectively. The relatively low numbers recorded in 2021 and 2022 were attributed to the lockdowns and travel restrictions triggered by COVID-19. In 2024, a survey by market research firm Sunergia listed travel preferences of Moroccans, showing that Spain, France, and Italy are the favorite international destinations for Moroccans. The three destinations attract 29%, 27%, and 17% of Moroccan visitors, respectively. Turkiye is also one of the top destinations for Moroccans, with 15% of the Sunergia survey respondents ranking the country as their favorite destination for summer vacation. As for local tourism, Moroccans prefer Tangier as a destination for tourism, alongside Marrakech and Agadir. About 38% of Moroccans see Tangier as their top destination, followed by Marrakech (33%), Agadir (26%), and Tetouan (22%). Marrakech – The director of Al Aqsa Mosque, Sheikh Omar Al Kiswani, has expressed deep gratitude to King Mohammed VI for Morocco's emergency humanitarian and medical aid to Palestinians in Gaza. In a statement to MAP, Morocco's news agency, Sheikh Al Kiswani commended the country for its 'incessant efforts in support of the Palestinian people,' describing the royal initiative as 'an act of benevolence to alleviate suffering' for Gaza's population, who lack basic necessities. 'These laudable efforts are highly appreciated by our families in Palestine and the residents of the Holy City,' Sheikh Al Kiswani stated. He specifically recognized Morocco's continued support through various projects, particularly programs from the Bayt Mal Al Quds Acharif Agency that preserve Jerusalem's civilizational heritage and Islamic identity. El Habache characterized the aid as 'a new illustration of the major role of His Majesty the King, President of the Al-Qods Committee, in support of the Palestinian people and their causes.' The aid package, totaling nearly 180 tons, contains essential food supplies, milk, specialized products for children, medicines, and surgical equipment for vulnerable populations. It also includes blankets, adapted tents, and other necessary equipment for those displaced. In March 2024, Morocco launched an unprecedented initiative, sending approximately 40 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza through Israel after air transit to Tel Aviv. As President of the Al-Quds Committee, King Mohammed VI maintains a unique role coordinating support for Palestinians based on urgent needs from the ground. The current aid shipment, which goes beyond symbolic gestures, was announced Wednesday and represents one of Morocco's largest humanitarian contributions to Gaza during this unrelenting crisis, which continues to claim innocent lives daily through bombs, bullets, and the weaponization of hunger.
