Phillies' Yankees domination leads to ‘Eagles' chants at Yankee Stadium
The Philadelphia Phillies entered their series against the New York Yankees on a mission. Bryce Harper kept his historic hot streak going with a third-inning solo shot. Trea Turner chipped in two RBIs and two runs scored to help build a 9-3 lead. Things got so bad at Yankee Stadium that Phillies fans were able to start a Philadelphia Eagles chant.
Philadelphia faithful started the chanting early in the game, but it crescendoed in the seventh inning.
If things continue to go well for the Phillies, the series could reach historic levels. Philadelphia scored 21 runs over two games against New York in their series. This is the only time that each squad will see the other outside of the World Series this season. If nothing else, the Phillies can walk away knowing that they have New York's number in a potential postseason matchup.
Harper, Turner, and the rest of Philadelphia's offense has taken full advantage of the Yankees pitching staff. New York traded for Ryan McMahon on Friday, but their starting rotation remains one of the team's biggest weaknesses. If Yankees general manager Brian Cashman cannot find a solution before the MLB trade deadline, Eagles chants will be the least of his problems.
On the other side of the matchup, the Phillies are playing their best baseball at a great time. Philadelphia has been aggressive at the trade deadline, but their recent success has fans feeling good about their team. The New York Mets passed them for the lead in the National League West, but Philadelphia is neck-and-neck with them in the standings.
Hearing Eagles chants in Yankees Stadium is a rare occurrence. However, Phillies fans can do what they want when their team is winning in such dominant fashion. The series has exposed how far New York is from serious contention. Luckily for both teams, they have plenty of time to reach their potential before the playoffs begin.
For now, though, Harper, Turner, and the Phillies have the upper hand.

Yankees release veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman after a busy trade deadline
MIAMI (AP) — The New York Yankees released veteran right-hander Marcus Stroman on Friday, a day after making a flurry of moves at baseball's trade deadline. Stroman, who is in his 11th season in the majors, was cut ahead of the opener of a three-game series against the Miami Marlins. The Yankees acquired All-Star relievers David Bednar and Camilo Doval, as well as utilityman José Caballero in separate trades Thursday. New York also optioned right-handers Ian Hamilton and Yerry de los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room on the 26-man roster. Stroman signed a two-year deal worth $37 million with New York before the start of last season and is still owed the rest of his $18.5 million salary. He has an $18 million conditional player option for 2026 that would be exercised if he pitches 140 or more innings in 2025. Stroman has pitched only 39 innings so far this season — he missed 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation. He made his ninth start of the season against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, picking up the win after allowing four runs and six hits in five innings. Stroman is 3-2 with a 6.23 ERA. ___ AP MLB:

Matt Turner joins Revolution on loan from Lyon as he looks to get back to national team form
Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Matt Turner is returning to his MLS roots as he looks to get back into position to compete for the starting job as U.S. national team's goalkeeper. Turner will join the New England Revolution on loan from French Ligue 1 club Lyon through June 2026, the Revolution announced Friday. The deal includes an option to purchase the contract of Turner, who will be a designated player on the Revolution's roster for the remainder of the 2025 season. He'll be eligible for targeted allocation money in 2026. One of the reasons that Turner was displaced by New York City FC's Matt Freese at the U.S. starter at goalkeeper for the CONCACAF Gold Cup matches in June and July was that he hadn't played consistently at the club level for France's Lyon. Turner, 31, became the No. 1 U.S. goalkeeper ahead of the 2022 World Cup and had started 14 consecutive competitive matches for the U.S. and 23 of 24 before the Gold Cup. Turner will now look to get back to that level in New England, where he made his pro debut in 2016.
