Carrie Grant: SEN parents are treated like 'fleas' as she blasts Labour

Daily Mirror16 hours ago
The TV presenter, whose four children with her husband David Grant are neurodivergent, says that getting a education, health and care plans (EHCPs) change the family's life
TV presenter Carrie Grant says parents of children with special educational needs are treated like 'a flea on the underbelly of society' as she warns Labour not to axe the care plans they rely on.
Her four kids with her husband – singer and broadcaster David Grant – are neurodivergent.

There are fears the government white paper, due in the autumn, detailing reform to the special educational needs and disabilities system could mean the end of education, health and care plans.

Carrie – whose kids are Olive 30, Tylan, 23, who played Brooke Hathaway in Hollyoaks, Arlo, 19, and Nathan, 15 – is also autistic.
The 59-year-old mum, a regular on BBC1 's The One Show, said: 'As a SEN parent you become the underbelly of society – the flea on the underbelly.

'There is a feeling of isolation because no one gets it, you're gaslit and told it's your fault.
'Our voices are not heard by professionals or politicians. My husband and I set up a support group for 300 families. We've been meeting for 13 years.
'We've heard the most incredible stories of suffering, of parents trying to keep going when every system is against them; when even their own families don't get it.

'These stories are traumatising to hear. We have four children. Three of the children have had EHCPs, two are still in effect. Arlo was out of school from age 11 to 14, because there was no school available locally that could meet their needs.
'I became not just a parent, but a full time carer, teacher, therapist. We had a nightmare trying to access CAMHS [Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services].
'My child retreated into their bedroom, they felt they didn't fit, would never fit, never be good enough, never be neurotypical enough – their esteem took a hit.

'At 14 we found a school and Arlo flourished. Arlo is now 19 and is off to mainstream college.
'Having an EHCP was life changing. Arlo became proud of being autistic and realised their gifts were valuable and they had a place in their environment. But Arlo missed three years of childhood – three years out of school – and is still processing the trauma from that.

'Around 300,000 children are out of school. Many parents have to school their own children, and taking away EHCPs will push children further into the margins.
'Having an EHCP means my child's rights are, by law, protected and they can still have an education.
'Without that law in place my child would be back in their bedroom. We've got children ending their lives over this because they are at the bottom of the pile.

'EHCPs protect their right to an education and a future and give them a place in society and a value. Without them they will not have anything.
'When Tylan was 16, they got a job at Hollyoaks. Everyone at Hollyoaks was sent on two days of autism training. This is more training than most teachers have ever had. Tylan was loved and accepted by Hollyoaks and flourished there.'
She added: 'To take away the very little our children have – which means their rights are protected in law and gives some reassurance - is terrifying.
'Parents are not after a 'golden ticket.' We just want our children to be able to access an education.'
Carrie added: 'This is 100% about balancing the books and funding. For years the Government hasn't wanted to invest and now the little investment we do have, could be taken away.
'Many people who voted Labour are shocked because of their actions on welfare and the PIP crisis. We've had decades of failing these children. Failure is expensive. We need absolute change to the system - but we need to keep the EHCPs in place.'

Ryan confides in Ronnie (Vinta Morgan), worried, and tells him about the kiss. Clocking Carl (Jonathan Howard) with a split lip and bruises, Debbie realises he's in trouble. Todd tells Billy (Daniel Brocklebank) that Theo is finally at ease and is even suggesting they get their own place. But Billy overhears Theo telling an old workmate he has a new woman in his life. Todd and Theo enjoy a meal in the Bistro when Noah (Richard Windsor) suddenly hands Theo a leaflet, urging him to save his soul. Theo then tells Todd he was collared and Todd is furious. ‌ Later, Todd and Billy find Noah practising conversion therapy on a member of his congregation. Noah reveals that Theo is somewhere safe. Sally (Sally Dynevor) takes the girls to visit Lou but Brody (Ryan Mulvey) refuses to go. Lou shares her plan to plead not guilty and asks Sally for a favour. Later, the Slaters head to the Vic where they face off with the Beales, who are attempting to bid for a sale. Tensions emerge at No.41 when Suki (Balvinder Sopal) snaps at Vinny (Shiv Jalota) over Ash's engagement. Linda (Kellie Bright), Elaine (Harriet Thorpe) and Johnny (Charlie Suff) prepare for the Vic auction. But Linda wants to start afresh and tells Oscar (Pierre Moullier) about Annie's paternity. She pales when Oscar reasons that Max should know. ‌ Hollyoaks Jez and John Paul gear up for their wedding - but secrets threaten to turn everything upside down. Dodger presses Liberty to tell the truth about her and Jez. Just as tension peaks, a phone call confirms Dennis' remains have been found. Diane and Tony prepare to move back into The Dog, reigniting hope for their family. They then agree to take things slow with a family picnic. John Paul is riddled with doubt about Jez. The fallout of the big day leaves emotions running high and danger closing in fast. ‌ Neighbours Sam and Aaron try to hide something from Jane but she smells a rat and they eventually tell her that Mike is engaged. Holly is fearful when Krista asks her to work the drinks van with Bowman still roaming free - and Andrew is deep in thought about her, neglecting Wendy. But Saskia's clinginess towards Susan prompts Wendy to contact Saskia's old schools in Queensland to understand her behaviour. Elsewhere, Cara spots Bowman in an alley and pursues him but she runs head into Remi, leaving him unconscious. ‌ Home and Away Levi isn't happy about the level of pressure Mackenzie's putting on them to get pregnant, but things get worse when one of his nurses has quit. Dana is keen to get the position, but she quickly finds out who she's up against. Abigail and Eden return from visiting their mother and part ways. Later, Abigail and Cash inquire whether Eden has decided to invite her father to the wedding - but a row ruins it all. Meanwhile, Lacey throws Theo under the bus while Roo meets someone new.

Emmerdale spoilers tease unlikely character 'exposes' John as he 'kills again'

Emmerdale spoilers have teased some major twists and turns from killer John Sugden potentially being rumbled by a surprising character, to Nate Robinson's family being given shocking news More than one character could be onto Emmerdale killer John Sugden next week, as spoilers tease an unlikely person could rumble the truth. It comes as Nate Robinson's 'real killer' is unmasked, when the police deliver some shocking news. His family learn who 'really' killed him, but it isn't John who gets named by detectives or who even confesses to the crime. ‌ There's big twists ahead and it could lead to the downfall of John who sets a plan in motion. While it kicks off perfectly a couple of errors could unravel the whole thing, and see him exposed for two murders. ‌ More is to be revealed, by spoilers detail some big twists in the fallout to John orchestrating framing newcomer Owen for Nate's death. John accidentally killed Nate in September and dumped his body in the lake, with it only discovered weeks ago. Amid his family coming to terms with his death and people being blamed, Owen, who was recently seen drugging Robert Sugden before trying to flee with him, makes a return to the village. Robert's brother John turned him away then and saved Robert, and in upcoming scenes he's shown kicking him out of the doctors surgery. Emmerdale's John Middleton joins Hollyoaks to play show's 'most evil character ever' ‌ But it seems upcoming scenes will show him setting up Owen, claiming he has confessed to Nate's murder. This is delved into next week when detectives reveal they have a confession and even a motive, or a story of what happened between Owen and Nate. In a dark twist though Owen is dead, with him believed to have taken his own life. Liam Cavanagh heads to the patient's address and is concerned by a lack of response, with the police soon arriving and finding him dead. When a detective finds a 'suicide note' on his laptop with a written confession to killing Nate, John's plan seems to be working. So Has he struck again and killed Owen, before pinning Nate's murder on him? More importantly, will the story be bought? ‌ When Nate's dad Cain Dingle and wife Tracy Robinson are told the news they are struggling to process the information. John then acts shocked about the ongoing events, and when Robert finds out he's left shaken especially given what happened with Owen just weeks ago. But all this does is raise his suspicions over John given the coincidence that Owen is apparently involved. He decides to investigate, especially when he learns John has been at Owen's house right before he died. ‌ Robert sets up a meeting with Owen's brother Steve, and is left reeling to uncover Owen 'can't have killed Nate' as he had a tight alibi for the day he was killed. Robert heads to the police station, claiming to have new information about Nate's murder - but what will he reveal and will John be exposed? It might not be Robert who exposes his killer brother though, as Paddy Kirk could be about to rumble the truth in a surprising twist. We know that John has been struggling with what he did to Nate and has turned to a helpline numerous times. He's gotten close to spilling the beans and it's been teased that he may break, and may give away what he's done. This continues next week when he once again makes contact, but it seems he's been messaging them and not actually speaking on the phone. ‌ Next week, his volunteer suggests a call rather than a message, which would give away his voice. So when it's revealed next week that Paddy is volunteering on a crisis helpline, surely this could be a major hint that he is the volunteer John is messaging, and if yes then surely it's only a matter of time before Paddy hears John's voice and realises what's going on. As for Robert next week, he's still causing drama as he continues to plot behind Moira Dingle's back after convincing her to sell him the farm - while in cahoots with Kim Tate. With Robert then planning to sign over to Kim, he's stopped in his tracks by her desperation and senses she is hiding something. ‌ Kim tells Joe Tate no one can find out their plans, so Robert does some digging to see what she's after the land but soon Kim flees to Dubai. With it left in Joe's hands, who goes to see Moira and reiterates Kim's offer to buy the farm. Moira has a difficult decision to make but what will she do and what is Kim up to? Elsewhere next week, Marlon Dingle is gutted when daughter April Windsor refuses to return to college and there's drama for Mack Boyd and Charity Dingle. When Mack finds out his wife has offered to be her granddaughter Sarah's surrogate without even telling him he's aghast, and it leads to an explosive argument. It's Eric Pollard who's told Mack all, leaving his grandson Jacob Gallagher furious. Soon Eric tells him and Sarah he's worried about her shortened life expectancy, and that's why he's sabotaging things. Mack and Charity can't come to an agreement meanwhile, and soon he gives her an ultimatum: it's the surrogacy or their marriage. So will the pair split for good?
