HYDERABAD: A majority of people involved in online gambling and betting in Telangana are aged between 18 and 25, according to a survey conducted by the Public Response Against Helplessness and Action for Redressal (PRAHAR), an NGO.
The findings were revealed on Friday at an event titled 'Click:Bet:Repeat: Consumer Survey on the Forces Driving Online Betting and Gambling', held in Telangana, where online betting is banned.

The survey, conducted over the past six weeks, covered 2,761 punters from across the state. It found that the majority of the respondents who placed bets came from low-income backgrounds, with nearly 38% of them earning a monthly income of less than Rs 15,000.
The study focussed on users accessing betting platforms through apps available on the Play Store, as well as through links available on Telegram or advertisements on social media.
'Telegram popular choice'
"Players are careful not to reveal their true identities while betting, which makes VPNs the most popular choice - used by 69% of respondents. Telegram links are the second popular choice at 20%," said president of PRAHAR Abhay Raj, during a press conference.Other findings highlighted that online betting continues unabated in the state despite the ban.
"For instance, 87% of the respondents said they engage in online gambling every day, and 89% of the respondents said betting sites are easily accessible.
Most of the respondents - 96% - knew that it was illegal too," the survey found.
The majority of them said they were drawn into the betting to make easy money. "The prospects of winning large sums from meagre investment attracts 86% of users, while 56% continue betting because they believe others are winning big," a member from the NGO said.
The respondents claimed that they had lost more than they invested. According to the data, 79% of punters reported losses exceeding Rs 50,000. He recommended that Telangana consider implementing a conditional ban, similar to the one followed in Tamil Nadu.

THANE: Thane cyber police arrested three men for allegedly duping a city resident of Rs 3.04 crore through a sophisticated 'digital arrest' scam. This scam involved impersonating govt officials and threatening victims with fake legal action. Investigations revealed they transferred Rs 82.46 lakh of the fraud proceeds overseas using cryptocurrency. The money was converted into Tether (USDT), a type of Virtual Digital Asset (VDA)—a stable cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar—commonly used for cross-border transactions and often exploited in online scams due to its speed and semi-anonymous nature. According to the FIR registered at Thane police station, the fraudsters initially contacted the victim claiming to be from a courier company, alleging that a parcel sent in his name was seized. 70-Year-Old Duped Of Rs 3 Crore, Kept Under 'Digital Arrest' For 8 days

Mumbai: A 70-year-old doctor was cheated by cyber criminals of Rs 3 crore and kept under "digital arrest" for eight days after being accused of involvement in a non-existent money laundering scam, a Mumbai police official said on Saturday. In the month of May, the victim got a call from a person identifying himself as telecom department staffer Amit Kumar, who told her a SIM card had been bought with her personal details for use in criminal activities. "She then got a call from another person who identified himself as Crime Branch officer Samadhan Pawar. He told the victim that her bank account and debit card details were found in a raid at the residence of an airline company owner who was earlier arrested for money laundering and is currently out on medical bail," the official said. The accused sent her multiple documents claiming these were from probe agencies like CBI, Enforcement Directorate as well as the RBI. "A man in police uniform also spoke to her husband on video call, all of which convinced her about the case. She was then put under video surveillance, which these fraudsters call digital arrest, for eight days. She was made to report to them every hour during this period. Out of fear, she transferred Rs 3 crore into various bank accounts given to her," he said. She approached West Region cyber police station on June 5, after which a case was registered, the official said. A probe has found the accused converted Rs 82 lakh in cryptocurrency, he said, adding efforts were on to nab them and retrieve the lost money.
