Ahead of Shambhu stir, Punjab Police place farm leaders under house arrest, detain many
Farm groups Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had announced the protest over cops allegedly assaulting a farm leader on March 19-20. However, on Sunday night and later on Monday morning, personnel of Punjab Police started reaching the houses of senior farm leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, and placing them under house arrest.
The action had the stamp of Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann, who also issued a statement on X over protests that involve blocking roads and railways. "Any announcements, protests, or strikes in Punjab that involve blocking roads or railways or cause inconvenience to the general public and disrupt daily life will be considered acts against the public. All organisations and groups are advised to take note. There are other ways to express opposition, as troubling the people is not right. If violated, they should be prepared for strict legal action. Issued in the interest of the hardworking people of Punjab," said Mann.
Commenting on the midnight crackdown on farmers, Dallewal said the action was "unwarranted". "It is no less than a midnight assault on democracy. After a sustained struggle and fast, I am unable to even walk properly, yet I have been confined to my home. We only announced a day-long peaceful protest, but instead of taking action against those from whom stolen items have been recovered, we have been put under house arrest. It is time for people to speak out, or they will silence all our voices," he said.

Police also reached the residences of Manjit Singh Rai from BKU (Doaba), Sukhwinder Kaur from BKU (Krantikari), and Balwant Singh Behramke, and put them under house arrest. Some others, including Kulwinder Singh Panjola, Hardev Singh Chitti, Gurpreet Singh and Harvinder Singh Masaania, were rounded up and detained at different police stations, stated farm leaders. The action drew sharp criticism from other farmer organisations.
Sources in police said the action was taken as they were apprehending a large gathering at Shambhu again. In the past, Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha had, on Feb 13, 2024, started protests at Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana to demand a legal guarantee on MSP. Though the farmers had wanted to march to Delhi, their way was blocked by Haryana Police. As the stalemate continued for 13 months and either side refused to budge, Punjab Police removed protesters at the two sites by force on March 19.
While these two protests ended, police were accused of misbehaving with farmer leaders, and stealing tractors and belongings of protesters. It was during this confusion that police were accused of a assaulting a farm leader at Shambhu police station. As part of the latest protest, farm groups wanted to protest at the same police station.
CM's message elicits another protest call
The CM's post on X slamming protesters has elicited another protest call, this time by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarvan Singh Pandher. He has now called for disrupting rail traffic at Devidaspura near Amritsar on May 7 and urged other farm organisations to stand up against this highhandedness.

Punjab launches anti-drug curriculum in schools under ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh'

(Photo: X) The initiative, part of the third phase of the ongoing 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (War Against Drugs) campaign, aims to sensitise over 8 lakh students from Classes 9 to 12 on the perils of drug addiction. The curriculum will be rolled out in 3,658 schools and includes 35-minute sessions held every fortnight over 27 weeks. These sessions will feature documentaries, quizzes, interactive activities and poster campaigns, focusing on busting drug-related myths, resisting peer pressure and promoting healthy choices. Experts and scientists will contribute to delivering this programme, which forms a core component of the state's preventive strategy. Kejriwal emphasised that Punjab's location along the international border had made it vulnerable to drug trafficking. He said the state government was adopting a zero-tolerance policy, having already arrested over 15,000 drug traffickers, seizing more than 1,000 kg heroin and demolishing properties amassed through the illegal drug trade. He criticised rival political parties for allegedly supporting known drug lords, accusing them of prioritising personal gains over the welfare of the state. Chief minister Mann said the transformation in government schools had restored public trust, with many students now shifting from private to public institutions. He blamed the previous governments for allowing drugs to proliferate for political and financial gain. He reiterated his government's commitment to justice, referencing the ongoing legal action against high-profile figures like Bikram Singh Majithia. Botcha points out that state's law and order maintenance has gone haywire
Visakhapatnam: YSRCP MLC Botcha Satyanarayana pointed out that anarchy prevails in the state with the coalition's inefficient governance. Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh willing to take dope test amid drug abuse allegations: Lawyer
Chandigarh: Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh , currently lodged in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA), is willing to undergo a dope test , his lawyer said. The statement comes in response to allegations of drug abuse levelled by his own associates, as mentioned in a Punjab Police chargesheet filed in the Ajnala court last month. Advocate Imaan Singh Khara, who serves as the legal advisor and chief spokesperson of Akali Dal Waris Punjab De recently met Amritpal in Dibrugarh jail. He told the TOI, "Bhai Sahib (Amritpal Singh) has said that instead of levelling false allegations, Punjab Police may get his dope test done. He has said if Punjab police want, they can come to Dibrugarh to get the test done." Khara added that Amritpal has demanded that once he undergoes a dope test, the political leaders accusing him of drug abuse should also be made to take the test. As per the police chargesheet, Amritpal's two associates, Bhagwant Singh alias and Varinder Singh Fauji, in their disclosure statements recorded before the police, claimed that Amritpal was "hooked on drugs" in Punjab and "consumed them in Assam's Dibrugarh jail too". As he saw the media persons, Bajeke, who was escorted by policemen, alleged that "we were beaten up and made to sign thousands of papers and recorded on video." Khara said he met Amritpal in Dibrugarh jail on July 24 in connection with "a writ petition we will file in the Supreme Court to challenge the NSA" under which Amritpal is detained in Dibrugarh jail for the third consecutive year now. Khara said, "It took two suitcases of documents weighing around 25 kg, which I brought from Dibrugarh jail, to prepare the grounds for the writ petition to challenge the NSA in the Supreme Court. The documents include challan papers in Hari Nau (Gurpreet Singh) murder case, papers of grounds of detention of NSA, order of detention, and others. The documents are very voluminous and are in both English and Punjabi language. These are single-size printed legal size papers." Khara said Amritpal was very upbeat about "Mission 2027" to prepare for the 2027 Punjab elections "to safeguard the interests of Punjab" and to "make Punjab drug-free."
