India fast-tracks $3-billion spy satellite scheme following Operation Sindoor

Mint12-05-2025

New Delhi: India is looking to give its satellite-based surveillance capabilities a rapid makeover, as the country navigates a tenuous ceasefire with neighbour Pakistan after the worst hostilities seen since a war between them in 1971.
The Centre has tasked three private firms–Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics, and Alpha Design Technologies–to compress their satellite development timeline from four years to 12-18 months, according to three people aware of the matter. The satellites are now targeted to be ready by end-2026 or earlier instead of end-2028, the three people said, requesting anonymity due to the matter's sensitivity.
One of the satellites–under advanced stages of development by Ananth Technologies–may even be ready this year itself, one of the people cited above said. It would be launched either aboard Isro's heavy rocket, Launch Vehicle Mark-III (LVM3), or Elon Musk-backed SpaceX—depending on their respective mission schedules this year.

The soft orders to expedite the latest generation of surveillance satellites were issued from the ministry of defence (MoD) just before India commenced Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
The accelerated effort is part of the $3-billion Space-based Surveillance-3 (SBS-3) scheme, which was approved by the cabinet committee on security (CCS) last October with a net budgetary outlay of $3 billion subject to revisions.
In this scheme, a total of 52 surveillance satellites are being built. While the three private companies are building 31 of these, the remaining will be built and deployed gradually by India's central space agency, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro).
'It is a necessary move in light of such sensitive geopolitical interactions," one of the people cited above said, adding that the SBS-3 constellation will work as a crucial piece of infrastructure for India's national security, and is a prime example of the kind of large contracts that the Centre can offer private space firms.
Emailed queries sent to the three companies, as well as the defence ministry—the nodal ministry that will access the satellites for national defence and security usage—did not receive responses till press time.
Spy satellite builders
The three private-sector companies—Hyderabad-based Ananth Technologies, and Bengaluru-based Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies—are long-standing partners, suppliers and vendors of Isro, and have played key roles in previous surveillance satellites, as well as landmark Indian space missions such as the successful Chandrayaan-3.
Ananth Technologies, led by former Isro veteran Subba Rao Pavuluri, was a key supplier of components to the Chandrayaan-3 mission. So, too, was Centum—led by its chairman, Apparao Mallavarapu.
Ananth Technologies earned ₹270 crore in revenue in FY24. In the same fiscal year, Centum, which is publicly listed on the National Stock Exchange, reported ₹632 crore in revenue. In FY25 (nine months to December 2024), it reported revenue of ₹479 crore.
The third company, Alpha Design, was wholly acquired by Adani Defence and Aerospace, which is a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, in April 2019. Alpha Design has been one of Isro's key partners in building and deploying the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), which seeks to replace the global positioning system (GPS) in India with NavIC, an indigenous navigation standard. The company reported ₹536 crore in operating revenue in FY24, as per data from credit rating agency, Crisil.

All three companies are rated highly by credit rating agencies Care Edge and Crisil, based on large pending orders driven by Isro and the ministry of defence (MoD), among others.
For space firms, internal government contracts are key. In July 2024, former Isro chairman S. Somanath told Mint on the sidelines of a space conclave in New Delhi that the Centre, along with Isro and multiple agencies across ministries, is working to create awareness of the capabilities that private space firms bring to the table, and how they can be tapped for cutting-edge purposes such as secure communications, data analytics and more.
Industry veterans, too, believe that private firms can play key roles. Chaitanya Giri, space fellow at global think-tank Observer Research Foundation (ORF), told Mint that private space firms will continue to be preferred in large-scale, sensitive projects such as SBS-3.
'Each of these private players are already suppliers to the central space agency, which makes the manufacturing and eventual deployment of satellites for various purposes a project right up their alley," Giri said. 'In the long run, more such government projects will see India start to drive revenue to the private space sector in the same model as the rest of the world—despite them wanting to showcase the Indian space sector as an open market."

Torrent Pharma to acquire JB Pharma from KKR at ₹25,689 cr valuation

In one of the largest pharma deals in the domestic market in recent years, Ahmedabad-based Torrent Pharmaceuticals will acquire a controlling stake in investment firm KKR-backed JB Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals (known as JB Pharma) at an equity valuation of ₹25,689 crore, which will be followed by the merger of the two entities. The deal will be executed in two phases — acquisition of the 46.39 per cent stake held by KKR in JB Pharma at ₹1,600 per share, amounting to ₹11,917 crore, followed by a mandatory open offer to acquire up to 26 per cent of JB Pharma shares from public shareholders at ₹1,639.18 per share. 'In addition to the above, Torrent has also expressed its intent to acquire up to 2.8 per cent of equity shares from certain employees of JB Pharma at the same price per share as KKR,' the company said in a statement on Sunday. The next step in the deal will be a merger between Torrent Pharma and JB Pharma through a scheme of arrangement, under which every shareholder holding 100 shares in JB Pharma will receive 51 shares of Torrent Pharma. The boards of directors of both companies have approved this arrangement. KKR had acquired 54 per cent of JB Pharma in July 2020 from the promoters and founders, the Mody family, for approximately ₹3,100 crore (or ₹745 per share). It sold a part of its stake in March this year through block deals for ₹1,459.8 crore. KKR has earned more than five times on its investment, with around 36 per cent gross IRR. For instance, Torrent Pharma has previously indicated plans to increase its medical representative (MR) strength by 23 per cent by the end of FY26, and the acquisition can aid in manpower augmentation. Torrent Pharma holds a 3.74 per cent share in the domestic market (according to Pharmarack, May 2025), while JB Pharma commands a 1.12 per cent share. Further, consolidation in key international markets is expected to offer greater scalability. Samir Mehta, executive chairman of Torrent Pharma, said they want to build on JB Pharma's heritage and platform for the future. 'Torrent's deep India presence and JB Pharma's fast-growing India business, combined with the CDMO and international footprint, offer immense potential to scale both revenue and profitability. This strategic alignment furthers our goal of strengthening our presence in the Indian pharma market and builds a larger diversified global presence. Moreover, the CDMO platform provides a new long-term avenue of growth for Torrent.' Torrent has previously taken the inorganic route to grow its business and enter newer segments — in 2013, it acquired Elder Pharma's India-branded business; followed by the dermaceutical business of Zyg Pharma in 2015 and the API plant of Glochem Industries in 2016. Among other major deals, it bought the India-branded business of Unichem in 2017. Its last major acquisition was of skin-care products from Curatio Healthcare in 2022. Torrent Pharma is a highly domestic-focused company, drawing around 55 per cent of its consolidated revenues from the domestic formulations business. India sales grew by 13 per cent in FY25 to ₹6,393 crore. While the company has been outperforming industry growth in the domestic market, it is also planning to increase MR strength by 23 per cent by FY26-end. Torrent has a strong presence in the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and neurology segments. JB too has prominent cardiac and gastro brands like Cilacar, Metrogyl and Rantac. Torrent is also working on launching GLP-1 products as a day-one launch in FY26. Analysts expect a 15 per cent sales CAGR in domestic formulations for Torrent Pharma over FY25–27. Gaurav Trehan, co-head of Asia Pacific and head of Asia Pacific private equity at KKR, and CEO of KKR India, said: 'JB Pharma's transformation under our stewardship is a testament to KKR's ability to scale high-quality companies.' Nikhil Chopra, chief executive officer and whole-time director of JB Pharma, pointed out that over the past five years, the company has emerged as one of India's fastest-growing pharmaceutical players. 'We have built a strong foundation to deliver market-leading growth, as well as consistent improvement in profitability in the medium and long term. As we now enter a new chapter alongside Torrent Pharmaceuticals, we are confident that the combined strengths of our organisations will unlock greater opportunities to enhance healthcare access across our markets,' Chopra said. JB Pharma posted 12 per cent revenue growth in FY25 to ₹3,918 crore, while its EBITDA rose 16 per cent to ₹1,087 crore, and PAT increased 19 per cent to ₹660 crore. Notably, KKR Private equity has invested $2 billion in India in 2024 and recently invested $600 million in Manipal Group via its private credit arm.

"Surrender And Join The Mainstream": Amit Shah Rules Out Talks With Maoists

Hyderabad: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday ruled out any talks with Maoists and said the cadre of the proscribed outfit should give up arms, surrender before police, and join the mainstream. Addressing a rally after inaugurating the National Headquarters of the Turmeric Board in Nizamabad in Telangana, Amit Shah also said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is still raising questions on Operation Sindoor, should see the weak appearance of Pakistan to understand the effectiveness of the Operation. "Congress asks (the Centre) to hold discussions with these people (Maoists). Our government's policy is 'no talks' with those who hold arms. Give up weapons, surrender, and join the mainstream," Amit Shah said. He further said that about 10,000 people in the Northeast gave up weapons and joined the mainstream. They even contested elections held for positions ranging from the Taluk level to state assemblies. Similarly, more than 2,000 Maoists have surrendered in the past one and a half years. "Give up weapons and surrender. If you don't surrender, we have decided that before 31 March 2026, Naxalism will be finished in this country," the Home Minister said. He said 40,000 people lost their lives since about four decades in Maoist violence in Adivasi regions. Many Adivasis lost their limbs or even their lives, he said. Those who talk in favour of Maoism, what would they reply to the family members of Adivasis and security personnel who lost their lives in Maoist violence, he asked. He said he fears that Congress should not give shelter in Telangana to Maoists who are on the run across the country. However, there is no need to worry as the Modi government is in power at the Centre, he said. He told Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy that he should not allow the state to become the den of Maoists. "He (Reddy) may do anything. But, I say again. We will finish Naxalism from the entire country by March 31, 2026," he said. Shah asserted that the Centre gave a firm reply to the three major terror attacks in the country during the last 11 years. He said surgical strikes were carried out after the Uri terror incident, while air strikes were conducted after the Pulwama terror attack. Now, after the Pahalgam terror incident, a reply was given by "breaking into the house" of Pakistan, he said. After the Pahalgam attack, PM Modi had said that a lesson would be taught, and Pakistan was then issuing a nuclear bomb threat. Congress was thinking that nothing would happen, he said. However, the brave soldiers of the country's armed forces destroyed the headquarters of terror outfits (in Pakistan), he said. "Even today, Rahul Gandhi keeps asking some or other questions. Rahul Baba, what kind of proof are you asking for? See Pakistan's (bad) situation, then you will understand," he mocked. After Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, the security of the country was strengthened, he said, alleging that it was neglected during the previous Congress rule. Attacking the ruling Congress and BRS in Telangana, he alleged that the Congress government has not taken any action as per law against the corruption allegations against the previous BRS regime vis-a-vis the Kaleshwaram project, Dharani land portal, and others. Telangana, which was once the "ATM of BRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao" has now become the ATM of "Congress in Delhi", he alleged. The same corruption and the same talk in defence of Maoists is going on, he charged. Shah, who called for making the BJP assume power in the state, said only a double-engine government of PM Modi can ensure the welfare and progress of Dalits, backward classes, farmers, adivasis, women, and youth in the state. The Union Home Minister highlighted the pro-farmer measures of the NDA government, such as the transfer of Rs 6,000 into farmers' bank accounts under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi. Earlier, speaking at an event where the headquarters of the turmeric board was inaugurated, Shah said the Centre has set a target of achieving USD one billion in turmeric exports by 2030. He said the board would focus on packing, branding, marketing, and export of the commodity. The turmeric board would work towards ensuring remunerative prices for farmers, export of their produce, besides research and development, he said. Shah further said, during the 2023 assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to establish a Turmeric board in Telangana, and it was fulfilled. Union Coal and Mines Minister and Telangana BJP president G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar, BJP MP from Nizamabad D Arvind, Telangana ministers Tummala Nageswara Rao and D Anasuya Seethakka attended the inauguration of the office of the turmeric board. Earlier, Kishan Reddy and other leaders received Amit Shah when he arrived at Hyderabad's Begumpet airport. The establishment of the Turmeric Board has been a major demand of the turmeric farmers in Nizamabad, and it was also a key election issue. BJP Lok Sabha member Arvind, who had promised to set up the turmeric board, had defeated BRS MLC and then Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao's daughter K Kavitha in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He was re-elected in 2024. (Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.)

'If he does get in..': Donald Trump warns Zohran Mamdani, says he didn't know who he is

Donald Trump threatens that if Mamdani becomes NYC mayor and doesn't do the right thing, NYC will get no money. President Donald Trump reiterated his shock at Socialist Zohran Mamdani winning the Democratic primary for the NYC mayoral election, as he had earlier, but this time it came with a threat of not giving any money to NYC. Speaking on Fox Sunday morning, Trump said Mamdani is a communist and he openly admits it. "He's a communist and I think it's very bad for New York. I don't know if he's going to get in but he's a pure communist and I think he admits it," he said. "I can't imagine it, but let's say this: If he does get it, I am going to be president, and he's going to have to do the right thing. Or they are not getting any money," Trump said. — RapidResponse47 (@RapidResponse47) "I used to say that we would never have a Socialist in this country but we have a communist. I was very surprised. I never heard of him. I don't know who he is," Trump said adding that Mamdani is a left, liberal, lunatic. After Mamdani's apparent victory, after Andrew Cuomo conceded the election, Trump made his first comment about Mamdani on his Truth Social, where he said Democrats have crossed the line in choosing Mamdani. "Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. he looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he's not very smart, he's got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, is groveling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!" Trump posted. Mamdani reacted to Trump's criticism and said: 'You know, this is not the first time that President Trump is going to comment on myself, and I encourage him — just like I encourage every New Yorker — to learn about my actual policies to make the city affordable." 'If he continues to focus on persecuting political enemies and on trying to detain and disappear New Yorkers, be it on the basis of their documentation or their sexual orientation or their politics, that is someone that I will fight time and again,' Mamdani told ABC.
