GCC family offices emerge as new venture capital powerhouses

Zawya25-04-2025
DOHA: Family offices in the GCC are undergoing a significant transformation. Once focused primarily on managing and preserving wealth, these entities are now embracing high-growth strategies that resemble the behavior of venture capital firms.
A new report by LOGIC Consulting, titled 'Beyond Wealth: How Family Offices Are Shaping the Future of Investment', reveals that 78 percent of family offices globally are planning to invest in digital assets over the next two to three years. This shift highlights how these entities are moving toward innovation-driven and tech-focused investment models.
Fueled by younger generations, growing digital fluency, and a greater tolerance for risk, family offices across the region are backing early-stage tech startups, AI ventures, sustainable technologies, and fintech disruptors. This evolution is positioning GCC-based family offices as influential players in the global innovation economy. Their long-term and purpose-led capital sets them apart from traditional institutional investors.
Traditionally, family offices were designed to manage wealth and ensure financial stability for future generations. Their investment strategies often centered around real estate, industrial holdings, and low-risk portfolios. That model is now shifting. Increasingly, family offices are aligning with the high-growth strategies of venture capital, supporting disruptive businesses, nurturing innovation, and forming direct partnerships with founders.
'Family offices in the GCC are no longer playing it safe,' said SeifAllah Rabie, UAE Managing Partner at LOGIC Consulting. 'They are actively reshaping the investment ecosystem and stepping into roles traditionally dominated by venture capital firms. The key difference is that family offices bring patient capital, which allows businesses the time and flexibility they need to scale.'

Microsoft to cut about 4% of jobs amid hefty investments in AI

Microsoft will lay off nearly 4% of its workforce, the company said on Wednesday, in the latest job cuts as the tech giant looks to rein in costs amid hefty investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company, which had about 228,000 employees worldwide as of June 2024, had announced layoffs in May, affecting around 6,000 workers. It was planning to cut thousands of jobs, particularly in sales, Bloomberg News reported last month. The Windows maker had pledged $80 billion in capital spending for its fiscal year 2025. However, the soaring cost of scaling its AI infrastructure has weighed on its margins, with its June quarter cloud margin expected to shrink from last year. Microsoft said on Wednesday it planned to reduce organisational layers with fewer managers and streamline its products, procedures and roles. The Seattle Times first reported on the layoffs earlier on Wednesday. Separately, Bloomberg News reported Microsoft's Barcelona-based King division, which makes the Candy Crush video game, is cutting 10% of its staff, or about 200 jobs. Microsoft confirmed to Reuters that its gaming division was impacted by the layoffs, although not the majority of the unit, but did not provide further details. Big Tech peers, which are investing heavily in artificial intelligence, have also announced job cuts. Facebook parent Meta earlier this year said it would trim about 5% of its "lowest performers", while Alphabet's Google has also laid off hundreds of employees in the past year. Amazon has also cut jobs across its business segments, most recently in its books division. The company had earlier laid off employees in its devices and services unit, and communications staff. Economic uncertainties and rising costs have triggered layoffs across sectors in Corporate America, as companies rush to streamline operations and hedge against further cost pressures. Reuters

GCC Unified Tourist Visa: Everything you need to know

Travel across the Gulf could soon get a whole lot easier. Say goodbye to visa juggling. The GCC Unified Tourist Visa is officially on the horizon – and it's set to make hopping across your favourite Gulf destinations smoother than ever. In a recent announcement, GCC Secretary General Jassem Al Budaiwi confirmed that the long-anticipated single-entry visa for the Gulf is moving ahead, with all six member states actively working to bring it to life. The GCC Unified Tourist Visa, which will officially be named 'GCC Grand Tours', will allow freedom of movement between residents in six countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman and Kuwait. As visa-free travel is possible for citizens of GCC countries, it's thought that the new visa will apply to the millions of non-nationals living in the region. This will also allow tourists to spend more than 30 days in the GCC. Plans for the new GCC Unified Tourist Visa were officially approved late in 2023 following a unanimous vote by ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council at a meeting in Oman. The visa is aimed at encouraging tourism within the region and growing each nation's tourist economy. Current rules for intra-regional GCC travel from the UAE UAE citizens do not need a visa to enter Saudi Arabia and can stay for up to 90 days but people just living in UAE do require a visa. In Bahrain, it's a similar story as UAE natives don't require a visa to enter but passport holders of other countries who reside in the UAE need either an eVisa or a Bahrain on-arrival visa. Credit: Supplied Oman is open to UAE citizens without the need for a visa but residents in the GCC currently need to be on a list of approved professions or be accompanied by someone who is in order to get an unsponsored visa. Citizens of GCC countries can enter Kuwait without a visa by presenting a valid GCC ID card but those who are non-nationals will need an eVisa or visa-on-arrival. Qatar allows citizens of more than 100 countries to enter visa-free including those from the UAE. Lengths of stay vary and conditions will be different depending on your nationality. And, people travelling to the UAE from other GCC countries are allowed entry for a period of no longer than 30 days, which can only be extended once with an eVisa. When the date for the new unified tourist visa is confirmed, we'll have all the details you need to know to prepare yourself. What do you need for a GCC Unified Tourist Visa? Officials also say the visa will offer better value – meaning fewer application fees and a simplified process. Likely documents you'll need: While exact requirements may differ depending on your nationality, here's a general idea of what to prepare: A valid passport (with at least six months left) Online application form Recent passport photo Hotel bookings or an invitation letter Travel insurance with medical coverage Proof of funds (like a bank statement) Return or onward travel ticket How to apply Once launched, the visa application process is expected to go fully digital. Here's how it'll likely work: Visit the official visa portal (to be announced) Choose between single or multi-country access Upload documents and travel details Pay the visa fee securely online Receive your e-visa via email No queues. No embassies. No paperwork chaos. It has previously been hinted by the UAE Minister of Economy Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri that the visa will apply to residents within the GCC rather than just passport holders. In November 2023 he said: 'Hopefully, we are going to see something around a pan-GCC visa which will allow easier mobility of people within the GCC. 'A resident of Saudi, for instance, can enter the UAE and vice versa. I think that's where we see the future of GCC tourism.' This would be yet another addition to the list of things you can do with your Emirates ID. What will the GCC Unified Tourist Visa mean for UAE? While the UAE is arguably the best prepared of the six GCC nations to welcome large swathes of tourists, the country is going to make some changes to make travelling easier. For visitors to the UAE, the Emirates Tourism Council say they are working on a tourist route within the country which will interconnect the seven emirates. Infrastructure projects such as the Etihad Rail passenger train should make travel around the UAE easier (Credit: WAM) The new Etihad Rail passenger train set to start operations between Abu Dhabi and Dubai later this year should also make travel around the country much easier. New major roads around Dubai, the UAE's most populated city, will eventually make things easier too. NASDAQ listed DeFi Technologies expands into MENA with UAE office

Dubai — DeFi Technologies Inc., a financial technology company bridging traditional capital markets and decentralised finance (DeFi), has announced its expansion in the GCC and MENA region with the registration of DEFI DMCC with offices in Jumeirah Lake Towers, Dubai, UAE. DeFi Technologies, through its subsidiary Valour, and Valour Digital Securities Limited, a leading issuer of exchange-traded products (ETPs), has also opened a trading desk at DMCC (Dubai Multi Commodities Center) in the UAE. The DeFi Technologies team and its subsidiary Valour aim to support the increased institutional interest in digital assets in the GCC region and specifically in the UAE. This expansion into the Middle East is a key element of the strategy to expand product offerings and increase the global footprint. As the first Nasdaq-listed digital asset manager of its kind, DeFi Technologies offers equity investors diversified exposure to the broader decentralized economy through its integrated and scalable business model. This includes Valour, which offers access to more than 65 of the world's most innovative digital assets via regulated ETPs with plans to offer 100 by the end of 2025. With regulatory momentum, product velocity, and institutional credibility converging, DEFT is positioning itself as the BlackRock of Web3. Globally, institutional capital is pouring into spot Bitcoin and Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs), and in the Middle East and in the UAE in specific this is also becoming a trend. Recently, UAE sovereign wealth fund Mubadala announced it expanded its position in BlackRock's bitcoin ETF showcasing the latest example of institutions increasingly turning to non-traditional exposures wrapped in an ETF. Bitcoin ETPs are facilitating greater exposure for investors who had been interested in crypto but want a familiar and efficient wrapper. Currently, total assets under management in crypto ETPs have reached $176.3 billion. Andrew Forson, President of DeFi Technologies and Chief Growth Officer of Valour, said, ' We believe the demand for digital asset ETPs will increase not only globally but in the GCC and Middle East. 'Investors whether sovereign wealth funds, institutional investors, family offices and even retail investors are interested in crypto but require familiar and efficient vehicles to get exposure.' He adds, 'Wrapping digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum in regulated financial instruments such as ETPs will increase the number of crypto investors and offer countries such as the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Saudi Arabia access to international foreign investment. Local and international get exposure to these assets through trusted providers like the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange, Dubai Financial Markets, and others.' Already DeFi Technologies has expanded into Turkey through a collaboration with Misyon Bank, and Misyon Kripto to work to introduce ETPs. In Turkey currently over 50% of investor population are holding digital assets. In 2024, DeFi Technologies through its subsidiary Valour partnered with GulfCap Investment Bank ('GCIB'), a licensed investment bank as its key Transaction Advisor for the proposed cross-listing of Valour's ETPs on the Nairobi Securities Exchange ('NSE') in Kenya. The proposed cross-listing will allow Valour's ETPs to be traded in Kenyan Shillings on the NSE and provide investors in East Africa with exposure to leading digital assets through regulated investment vehicles. In Europe DeFi Technologies subsidiary Valour currently offers 65+ fully hedged digital asset ETPs on leading European exchanges including Xetra, Spotlight, and Euronext.
