Bastianini and Espargaro to race for KTM Tech3 in Czech Grand Prix

TimesLIVE4 days ago
Enea Bastianini will race for KTM Tech3 at this weekend's Czech Grand Prix after recovering from illness and Pol Espargaro steps in for the injured Maverick Vinales, the MotoGP team said on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old Italian, who joined Tech3 from Ducati last year, missed the German Grand Prix but is expected to return to the track on Friday in practice for Sunday's race in Brno.
"It was tough for me to remain in bed for so long and unable to join the team at the German Grand Prix, but I gave myself the time to recover properly to arrive in Brno in good shape," Bastianini said.
Spaniard Vinales had surgery on Sunday for a fractured left shoulder, paving the way for compatriot Espargaro to make his return with Tech3, a team he debuted with in MotoGP back in 2014.
"It's been a long time since our last visit to Brno, which is a fantastic track," Espargaro said.
"The last time we raced here I felt super-good in my best period with KTM so let's see how it is with the new surface."

Messi double as Miami bounce back against Red Bulls

MIAMI - Lionel Messi rediscovered his scoring touch with two goals as Inter Miami bounced back from defeat to complete a 5-1 drubbing of the New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer on Saturday. Messi's red-hot season was rocked on Wednesday as Miami stumbled to a 3-0 defeat against FC Cincinnati. But the Argentinian superstar was back to his inspired best as Miami turned on the style at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey to record an emphatic victory. The Red Bulls had threatened to deliver another upset after Alexander Hack bundled home a 14th-minute opener to fire the hosts into an early lead. But Messi swiftly orchestrated Inter Miami's recovery from that setback, providing a sublime pass to set up former Barcelona team-mate Jordi Alba's equaliser in the 24th minute. Messi then combined with Alba for Miami's second goal, producing another brilliant pass to pick out the Spaniard, who crossed for Telasco Segovia to prod home on 27 minutes. Segovia then swept in his second of the night deep into first-half stoppage time to leave Miami firmly in control. Messi then took over in the second half as Miami cut loose. A majestic through ball by another former Barcelona team-mate, Sergio Busquets, sent the Argentine World Cup-winner racing through on goal in the 60th minute. Messi took his time and coolly feinted to wrongfoot Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel before tucking away the finish for 4-1.

Haashim Pead magic dust has been sprinkled on Junior Bok star Vusi Moyo: coach Foote

Junior Springbok head coach Kevin Foote feels playing next to star scrumhalf Haashim Pead has rubbed off positively on flyhalf sensation Vusi Moyo at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Italy. The SA U20 flyhalf has scored 50 points in the four games he has played to date, the most by any player of the 12 participating teams. He is once again expected to be key to the South African side's play when they face fierce New Zealand in the final on Saturday evening in Rovigo, in what promises to be a thrilling encounter between the two traditional rugby rivals. According to Foote, Moyo has had an unbelievable tournament. 'Vusi puts a lot into his training and has learnt a lot during his time playing next to Haashim, who's more experienced and played here last year,' said Foote. 'We saw what he did against England – kicking from over 50m. He'll take a lot of confidence into the final.' He was speaking from their Italian base of Valpolicella before of the much-anticipated clash. Grit and flair The Junior Boks have impressed throughout the tournament, with their semi-final victory over Argentina showcasing both attacking flair and defensive grit. Speaking to international media ahead of the big game, Foote praised the team's execution and resilience in their semi-final. 'Our strike plays were outstanding, and the defence was gutsy,' said Foote. 'New Zealand back their attack and they've grown in confidence as the tournament has progressed. Like us, they're passionate and composed – it's going to be a great game.' Skipper Riley Norton emphasised the team's belief and unity heading into the final: 'We've spoken a lot about backing ourselves. Pressure is always going to be there – it's been there throughout the tournament. 'But our confidence comes from our preparation. We haven't played in a final for 11 years, so this is a special moment. Each player truly cares for the team. It's less about pressure and more about excitement,' said Norton. Pead – the tournament's leading try scorer with six, plus a handful of try-assists – also credited the coaching staff for giving the backs the freedom to express themselves. 'Our tries have been a result of the platform laid by the coaches,' said the vice-captain. 'They've prepared us so well and given us the freedom to showcase our skills.' For Norton and Pead, the journey to the final has also been shaped by their experiences playing rugby at school level in South Africa – a fiercely competitive environment. 'It prepared us very well for a tournament like this,' said Norton, who captained Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch last year. 'We're used to big games at school, and we've always enjoyed them. Playing in front of huge, passionate crowds back home has definitely helped us handle the pressure.' Pead, who attended Bishops in Cape Town, echoed the sentiment: 'It's great to be part of a game of this magnitude, but it doesn't mean we need to change our preparation or approach. We'll stick to our routine, trust our processes, and enjoy the occasion.' Pead, Norton and Moyo are part of an unchanged Junior Springbok line-up to face New Zealand in the final in Rovigo. Kickoff is at 8.30pm.

Marc Marquez wins Czech GP sprint after penalty scare

Ducati's Marc Marquez took a record-extending 11th sprint win of the MotoGP season at the Czech Grand Prix on Saturday, but the Spaniard's celebrations were briefly put on hold during an investigation for tyre pressure infringements. Marquez and factory Ducati teammate Francesco Bagnaia were both forced to slow down during the race and surrender first and second place due to low tyre pressure, or risk incurring an eight-second penalty. Six-times champion Marquez relinquished his lead but was able to overtake KTM's Pedro Acosta with two laps remaining and cross the finish line first, with MotoGP later confirming that no further action would be taken against Marquez. Acosta's teammate Enea Bastiani ended in third. Asked if he had done enough to avoid a penalty, Marquez said: "Yeah, we did it. For that reason, I'm smiling. So it's true that it was super towards the limit. And yeah, we're riding comfortable. "Then I saw that the pressure was not enough. I tried to push some laps on the brakes, but I saw that was too much risk to get on that correct pressure. And then I decided to wait. "I just stayed super close to Acosta to increase the temperature. And then when I saw the temperature was already inside the rules, pressure was inside the rules, then I pushed in the last few laps." Marquez leads the riders' championship table with 356 points, with his second-placed younger brother Alex, who finished 17th after a disastrous start, 95 points behind on 261. Pole-sitter Bagnaia finished seventh after he was overtaken by Trackhouse Aprilia rider Raul Fernandez in the final lap. Reigning MotoGP champion Jorge Martin ended in 11th on his return to competition after suffering a collapsed lung and bruised ribs in a crash in Qatar in April. South Africa's Brad Binder finished 10th.
