Journalists' credibility hinges on code of ethics

The Sun04-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The code of ethics for journalists remains the key to determining a journalist's professional credibility, especially amid challenges posed by the digital era, including advancements such as artificial intelligence (AI) and the rise of 'instant' journalists.
Astro Awani's Head of Multi-Platform News Innovation, Shafizan Johari, said the code of ethics is akin to a set of values that must be upheld by anyone aspiring to be a credible journalist in news reporting.
'We are a civilised society, and every civilised society certainly upholds its own code of manners. In the context of journalism in Malaysia, we must take it upon ourselves to instil and practise this code of ethics in our daily work,' he said.
He said this when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara last night, which discussed the topic 'Kewartawanan Era Baharu: Pintar dan Beretika' (New Era in Journalism: Smart and Ethical). The programme also featured Bernama TV broadcast journalist and presenter Norliyana Zulkifli, as well as Media Prima Berhad multimedia journalist and news presenter Mas Zharif Zhafri Aziz Desa.
He also stressed that in today's media landscape, journalistic ethics are more important than the rush for speed or the race to be the first to break the news.
'For media organisations, being the first to break the news is often seen as exclusive. But to me, speed alone is no longer relevant. What matters more is the discipline to follow editorial principles, step by step, process by process, to ensure every report is authentic, accurate, and comprehensive.
'Don't rush to publish news without going through the proper editorial process, because that is where the identity of a (true) journalist lies,' he said.
Meanwhile, Mas Zharif Zhafri said that understanding the code of ethics in journalism should be instilled from the university level to produce individuals who fully grasp the responsibility of delivering information authentically and ethically.
'The code of ethics is what sets apart a true journalist from a citizen journalist. In my view, the code of ethics for journalists is something to be proud of, as it guides us in delivering authentic and accurate information,' he said.
Echoing a similar sentiment, Norliyana believes every journalist must adhere to the principles of journalistic ethics and suggests that the code of ethics be more widely shared with the public to promote a deeper understanding of authentic news reporting.
'With so many people wanting to become citizen journalists, perhaps the code of ethics for journalists can be shared more widely so that everyone, whether they are mass communication students or not, can better u

KL Aims To Lead ASEAN Cities In Solid Waste Management

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur aims to lead efforts among ASEAN capital cities in tackling solid waste management, with a strong focus on practical actions rather than mere declarations, said Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif. As Malaysia chairs ASEAN this year, she noted that Kuala Lumpur is hosting key urban discussions, including the Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC 2025), where waste management is expected to be a top agenda item. 'Sometimes we have so many declarations, but we want to declare our action. We want to do solid waste (management), we also want to do mitigation, and we want to do maybe public spaces and nature-based solutions,' she said during an interview on Bernama TV's ASEAN Dari Kuala Lumpur Ke Dunia programme tonight. Maimunah said Kuala Lumpur is pushing for a 'Kuala Lumpur Joint Leaders' Statement' among the mayors of ASEAN capital cities, with the goal of establishing an agreed action plan with timelines and commitments, which can be followed up at the next regional meeting in Manila, the Philippines. MGMAC 2025, to be held in the Malaysian capital, is expected to gather up to 8,000 participants and will run alongside two other urban-focused events -- the ASEAN Mayors and Governors Capital Meeting and the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum. Maimunah, who will chair the meeting, said it is not just a platform to showcase achievements, but also to share the challenges faced by Kuala Lumpur and other cities. 'This is the moment for us to take the opportunity, not only the Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), but I think the whole of Malaysia and all stakeholders in Kuala Lumpur to take the opportunity to showcase all the struggles, all the achievements and the growth that we have, and also to share our challenges,' she said. On Kuala Lumpur's position in the region, Maimunah said the city is comparatively ahead in terms of development planning and infrastructure. 'We have our plan, we have our good infrastructure, and then at the same time, we have the arts and culture, and Kuala Lumpur is also the hub of talent and investment,' she said.

New UK envoy to Malaysia to prioritise chip cooperation

Ajay Sharma, UK High Commissioner to Malaysia - Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The United Kingdom's new High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ajay Sharma, has made strengthening bilateral cooperation a key priority, with a particular focus on the fast-growing semiconductor sector and the development of integrated chip design and advanced manufacturing. He said the British government is keen to strengthen linkages and exchange ideas to increase the value chain in both countries in the semiconductor industry and the manufacture of high-end chips. This aligns with Malaysia's ambitions under the National Semiconductor Strategy or NSS to transition from outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing to high-end manufacturing and niche capabilities such as integrated circuit design. 'We have seen a Malaysian company invest in a new compound semiconductor facility in Wales,' he said, referring to SMD Semiconductor, a Sarawak state-owned firm that recently opened a research and development innovation hub in Newport, an industrial port city in Wales. 'Therefore, I really want to work with Malaysia on the semiconductor industry. Malaysia is already involved in different parts of the value chain, and we can complement and learn from each other,' he told Bernama after appearing on Bernama TV's 'The Nation' programme recently. Sharma, who succeeded Ailsa Terry CMG, had previously served in Iran, Qatar, Turkiye, Moscow and Paris. He also sees potential for a UK-Malaysia partnership in offering specialised courses on semiconductors and chip design in British universities, where a significant number of Malaysian students pursue higher education. 'We can also collaborate with local universities to bring Malaysian talent to the United Kingdom and set up courses here. Then we could see these courses develop and expand to Malaysia as well,' he said. He also highlighted clean energy as an area for increased bilateral cooperation, in which Malaysia has immense potential and where Britain could play a supporting role. 'Malaysia has huge natural resources, immense opportunities in clean energy and is working on significant development on carbon capture, green tech and energy transition. Malaysia also has creative and innovative technologies which can be used in our universities, labs and expanded into businesses. 'This interests me to try to get more investments from both countries in this sector as well,' said Sharma. Sharma said he is keen to boost two-way investments, especially Malaysian investments in the United Kingdom, citing successful ventures such as the Battersea Power Station redevelopment, YTL's Brabazon project in Bristol, and contributions in sectors ranging from water utilities like Wessex Water to power generation. At the same time, he aims to raise awareness among UK companies about business opportunities in Malaysia. 'Companies in the United Kingdom do not know much about the opportunities here in Malaysia, and we need to raise the profile to generate business interest. 'So, that is a key area that I would like to fix under my leadership,' said Sharma, who stressed this is even more important with Malaysia being a key market for economic growth in the Asean region. With UK-Malaysia trade worth £6bil (RM34.8bil), the potential for increased trade is huge. 'We should be doing much more in many areas, such as tech development, which affects everything from healthcare to life sciences to defence manufacturing.'
