Stockton artist wins Anh Phoong billboard contest

CBS News08-05-2025
STOCKTON -- Asia Lamela has been creating art since childhood.
Growing up in the Bay Area and moving to Stockton a few years back, she knows that iconic saying many locals know: "Something Wrong? Call Anh Phoong."
"How could you not know Anh Phoong?" Lamela asked. "Her face is everywhere. Her name. We all know who Anh Phoong is."
When friends started sending Phoong's billboard art contest to Lamela on social media, she went for it.
"I thought about it for like, maybe a month or so, just thinking about what could work and then maybe a week before, I started executing and using my Photoshop and painting a little bit too," Lamela said.
She submitted her work, and not too long after, she got the call from Phoong herself, saying she won.
Lamela says she was inspired by the iconic Rosie the Riveter posters she learned about in school.
"I just think it's a very strong symbol of womanhood, and it's also turning into a symbol of Asian-ness through the Anh Phoong likeness," Lamela explained.
She says this is one of her best accomplishments so far in her career as an artist.
But for her, the meaning behind it is much bigger than any billboard.
"Growing up, there wasn't too many people that kind of looked like me, you know, Asian Americans," Lamela said. "We're not really seeing too much in the media, and I think it's important for Asian Americans to use their voice creatively, so that we can have some representation and kind of claim some land, you know? So this was really important to me, and it was awesome that I could work with someone like Anh Phoong."
On top of the recognition, she also took home a $5,000 prize.

Bella Ramsey Being Eyed For Marvel's X-Men Film?

Marvel Studios is reportedly setting the stage for its highly anticipated X-Men reboot, and a familiar face from the world of prestige television might be stepping into the mutant spotlight. According to industry scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Bella Ramsey, the 21-year-old star of The Last of Us and Game of Thrones, is being considered for the role of Kitty Pryde, also known as Shadowcat, in the upcoming film. While the rumor remains unconfirmed, it's generating significant buzz as Marvel begins assembling its next generation of mutant heroes for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Ramsey's potential casting signals a fresh take on one of the X-Men's most beloved characters, known for her phasing abilities and emotional depth. Bella Ramsey as Kitty Pryde: A Perfect Fit? Ramsey, who earned widespread acclaim for their role as Ellie in HBO's The Last of Us, has proven their ability to carry complex, emotionally charged characters. Despite some fan backlash to the series' casting, Ramsey's performance won over critics and audiences alike, showcasing a maturity that could translate seamlessly to Kitty Pryde's evolving role in the X-Men universe. Traditionally introduced as a bright-eyed teenager, Kitty has grown into one of the X-Men's emotional anchors over the years, balancing vulnerability with leadership. A slightly older portrayal by Ramsey could allow Marvel to lean into the character's complexity, offering a version of Shadowcat who's both relatable and battle-tested. Did You Know? Kitty Pryde, created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in 1980, was one of the first young mutants to join the X-Men, bringing a fan-favorite perspective to the team's dynamic. The X-Men Reboot: A Star-Studded Lineup? Ramsey isn't the only name swirling around the reboot. Other rumored castings include Julia Butters as a potential Kitty Pryde contender, Bryan Cranston as Professor X, Daisy Edgar-Jones as Jean Grey, and Hunter Schafer as the shape-shifting Mystique. While these are speculative, the list suggests Marvel is aiming for a blend of established stars and rising talents to reintroduce the X-Men to the MCU. See also Warner Bros. Kicks off 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' Marketing With New Teaser The film, likely directed by Thunderbolts* helmer Jake Schreier, is being penned by Michael Lesslie, known for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Schreier, when asked about his approach, remained tight-lipped but hinted at a character-driven vision: 'It always starts from character and working with great writers and collaborators, and certainly thinking about how to do something different with any project that you take on.' Timing and Context in the MCU The X-Men reboot is expected to follow Avengers: Doomsday, which will reportedly feature the return of Fox's legacy X-Men actors, potentially setting the stage for a multiversal handover. This timeline positions the reboot as a pivotal moment for the MCU, introducing mutants as a central force in Marvel's Phase 6 and beyond. With Ramsey's star power and the creative team behind the project, the X-Men reboot could redefine the franchise for a new era, blending nostalgia with bold, character-focused storytelling.

‘Cobra Kai' Star Who Quit Hollywood Says She Lives ‘Like A Hermit' Now

Courtney Henggeler as Amanda LaRusso and Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso in "Cobra Kai." Cobra Kai star Courtney Henggeler — who announced in March that she was quitting acting after 20 years, is giving a peek into her life now. Henggeler made the announcement about leaving Hollywood in a March 30 Substack post, which partially reads, 'After 20-plus years of fighting the good fight in the acting business, I hung up my gloves on Friday. I called my agents and told them I was tapping out. I no longer wanted to be a cog in the wheel of the machine.' Henggeler played Daniel LaRusso's (Ralph Macchio) wife and auto-dealership co-manager Amanda LaRusso in Cobra Kai, which completed its sixth and final season on Netflix in February. 'We survived off the crumbs,' Henggeler noted in her Substack post. 'We filled our cup with the possibility; our mugs with delusion. Our plates were empty, but a golden goose hung over our heads. Today might be the day. Today might be the day I reach the golden goose … 20 plus years of this … I'm hungry.' In addition to Cobra Kai, Henggeler's acting resume includes a guest role as Missy Cooper, Sheldon Cooper's (Jim Parsons) twin sister on CBS' The Big Bang Theory in Season 1, Episode 15 in 2008. Henggeler reprised the role in 2018 in Season 11, Episode 24. On Monday, two months to the day after her retirement announcement, Henggeler appeared on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast to discuss the 2008 episode — titled The Pork Chop Indeterminacy — which she said marked her first major guest appearance in a TV show. After discussing and hearing clips from her 2008 appearance on The Big Bang Theory, podcast host Jessica Radloff eventually asked Henggeler about her life after Cobra Kai. 'I took myself off all the socials. So, I'm like a hermit,' Henggeler told Radloff. 'I bought a house in Connecticut and I live like a hermit in Connecticut. So, you can't know anything. I'm very secretive.' LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 17: (L-R) Courtney Henggeler and Ralph Macchio attend the special ... (Photo by) Courtney Henggeler Credits 'Cobra Kai' For Providing The Means To Quit Acting Courtney Henggeler played Amanda LaRusso from the very beginning of Cobra Kai, which ran for two seasons from 2018-2019 on the now-defunct YouTube Red streaming service before it was purchased by Netflix in 2021. The series ran for four more seasons, through 2025. Now, Henggeler is happy to be living in Connecticut and she credits her work on Cobra Kai with giving her the ability to do so. 'It's very beautiful. It's breathtaking [living in] the house that Cobra Kai built,' Henggeler told Jessica Radloff on The Official Big Bang Theory Podcast. 'Thank God for that show because I would not be living my Connecticut dream if not.' And best of all, Henggeler doesn't miss being plugged into what's going on all the time online. 'I don't mess with social media anymore. I think I'm a happier person because of it. But I also don't know what's going on in the world. I feel very deaf to things right now,' Henggeler told Radloff. 'So you can't follow me. But if you can find where I live in Connecticut, can, like, look in my windows, I guess.' Fans who miss seeing Henggeler on Cobra Kai can stream all six seasons of the series on Netflix.
