Australian man charged with cattle theft after $100,000 load of bull semen found

The Guardian2 days ago

Bull semen worth $100,000 is part of a haul of allegedly stolen wagyu cattle uncovered by police in regional Australia.
A 34-year-old man from Grafton, in northern New South Wales, faces 20 charges including cattle theft and obtaining financial advantage after allegedly stealing more than 100 cattle from his employer.
A vet allegedly contacted by the 34-year-old also faces animal cruelty charges for failing to provide treatment to some of his cattle.
The cattleman was asked by his boss to sell 200 cattle, but is accused of arranging to sell 114 of the animals, including 45 valuable full-blood wagyu cows, to himself in January 2024.
Det Ch Insp Cameron Whiteside, from the NSW police rural crime prevention team, said a rural crime police unit, codenamed Strike Force Newbury, had been investigating the alleged fraud for more than a year.
He said police 'conservatively' estimated the value of each cow at about $3,000.
Police allege the sale led to a discount of almost $100,000 after the man bought the herd through a third-party at a greatly reduced price.
A search warrant allegedly uncovered a liquid nitrogen storage tank containing the bull semen.
Whiteside said the semen was worth about $100,000, due to the value of wagyu beef.
'We're talking hundreds of thousands of dollars. But that's just on face value,' he said. 'Then you've got to look at the future benefit, or the breeding capabilities of that stock also.'
Embryos for breeding were also part of the alleged haul.
After searching the 34-year-old's property, police allegedly told him to seek treatment from a veterinarian for six wagyu bulls.
Police say the vet produced false documents saying he had treated the cattle without doing so and two of the bulls later died.
The vet has been charged with committing an aggravated act of animal cruelty and failing to provide vet treatment.
He was granted bail to appear at Grafton Local Court on 11 August.
Det Ch Insp Whiteside said there were several moving parts to a complex investigation, which required the assistance of five horse-mounted police to execute warrants and specialist rural crime police from across the state. Aside from two primary investigators, officers from New England, Dubbo and southern NSW also assisted.
Whiteside described the alleged offending as 'quite complex'.
The 34-year-old is charged with 20 offences including cattle theft, animal cruelty and obtaining financial advantage by deception.
He was also granted bail to appear at Grafton Local Court on 4 August.

Heartbreaking change parents refuse to make after their six-year-old daughter Airlie Montgomery wandered off a cliff and fell to her death - and their blunt message for cruel trolls

The parents of a six-year-old girl who fell to her death after wandering off a cliff have revealed a drink bottle prepared for school still sits untouched in the fridge. Airlie Montgomery fell from a rock ledge on March 16, just 800m from her home in North Nowra, on the NSW South Coast, after she wandered out of the front yard. Her body was found at the base of the ledge known as The Grotto, a bushwalking area with clifftop views, which her father Corey Montgomery said she had visited before. The little girl's non-verbal autism meant she had 'no sense of danger' as she walked to her death last week, according to her grieving father. Her mum Katie Amess and Mr Montgomery told The Daily Telegraph they faced sickening trolls online in the wake of Airlie's death, with heartless keyboard warriors criticising them over their little girl wandering off while they weren't looking. Mr Montgomery said they carried guilt over their daughter's death. 'We don't dismiss those comments, but don't you duck out to the toilet sometimes?' Mr Montgomery said. 'Don't you come out and see your child opening the kitchen drawer about to grab a knife? 'Practicality means you can't be there every second. That's why I want to change things.' Mr Montgomery was six hours away, working at a mine site, when his daughter went missing, but at least 1,000 locals came out of their homes to help search for Airlie. Her body was found in the Shoalhaven River beneath The Grotto four hours after she went missing. 'Airlie tested us, but she also taught us,' Mr Montgomery said. 'She had us drowning at times, but her cheeky laugh could always lift our heads above water in the volatile yet mesmerising world that she lived in. 'I've seen things that no father should ever have to see, Katie's felt things that no mother should ever have to experience.' Mr Montgomery will register a charity to help parents of children with autism navigate the NDIS system so his daughter's death is not in vain. Ms Amess said she was struggling to find words to express her appreciation for the overwhelming kindness during this 'unimaginable' time after losing her daughter. 'Our hearts are in a million pieces as we mourn the loss of our precious Airlie Fairy,' she said. 'The outpouring of support we've received has been a bright light in the midst of our grief.' A GoFundMe has raised more than $36,000 to cover the cost of the funeral and provide financial support for the grieving parents to allow them time away from work to mourn their loss. In April, Airlie's parents held a purple-themed funeral for the six-year-old. Many wiped away tears as they stood before the tiny, white coffin which was adorned with purple lilies and lilacs at Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre. In a statement, parents Mr Montgomery and Ms Amess said they were the 'people who understood Airlie's own little world'. 'It's quiet now, I never thought I'd miss the chaos of our days: Incessant vying for attention, late nights and meltdowns, mess and mayhem,' they said. 'And yet, how I long for it. The normality of our lives was far from normal.' He said he often considered himself and his partner to have been alone in raising Airlie, but the community's response has left him 'awestruck'.

Sex cult brainwashed me into being a ‘bride' for a rapist… I thought he was God & was sucked in with love-bomb tactics

LIZ Cameron, 32, is a health sector project manager and author. she lives in Canberra, Australia. 'As I walked out of the bookshop, a smiling woman approached. 4 She was a foreign student studying Australian culture, she explained, and asked if I'd mind completing a survey. It was January 2011 and I was a shy, insecure 18 year old just starting my gap year. I had no idea she was from a cult – and that I'd get sucked in. I took the pen from the girl, who said her name was Yujun. The questions were easy, from what I liked about Australia to my religion, so I gave my answers then said goodbye, thinking no more of it. A week later, Yujun emailed more questions about my faith, as I'd said I was Christian. She told me my answers showed I was 'beautiful', which made me feel good. The next week, I went to her home for tea with her and her housemates. That was the start of the love-bombing – the hugs when I arrived for meals, their joy at me joining Bible sessions. Seeing how happy they were made me want to feel that way, too, so within a few months, I was getting up at 5am to pray, followed by a 6am service at their house and hours of Bible reading. Inside a 'mind-controlling' CULT which 'forced mum and daughter to hit each other' and chose Fiji as the 'promised land' My mum started to worry, but I reassured her I was fine. As the brainwashing took hold, the girls told me they belonged to Sarang Church and that its founder, Pastor Joshua, had been falsely imprisoned in South Korea because of his faith. Searching for information on him or the church was forbidden, though. I accepted this without question, even taking part in a 'heavenly bride' fashion show organised by the church. In September 2011, they revealed Pastor Joshua – also called Jung Myung-seok or SSN – was the Messiah. I was ecstatic when SSN wrote to me from prison to say he loved me, and I dreamed of being chosen to be a 'Faith Star' – one of his brides on Earth. I moved out of my parents' house that November to live with the group. I no longer saw any of my old friends, as the church had become my life. When my mum tried to show me research on the church in January 2012, I ran away, terrified – I'd been taught that even looking at it would be 'spiritual suicide'. 4 4 Another time, when my dad came to the house to see me, my housemate hid me in the back of a car and drove away, because nothing was more important than being spiritually pure. A few weeks later, a group of us flew to South Korea to meet SSN and, waiting in the prison, I was so nervous. Suddenly, there he was. He said how happy he was to see us, while I said in stilted Korean: 'I love you.' Deep down, I didn't actually feel any love during our meeting, but I blamed myself and prayed harder. Back home, I received letters from SSN, which had become sexual. I told myself he was the Messiah and everything he did was holy. One wrong thought could taint me, and to be saved I had to sleep less, pray more, eat little and exercise. Losing a dangerous amount of weight caused my organs to atrophy and, in January 2012, I ended up in hospital with an eating disorder. 'DEEPLY DECIEVED' Mum saved me by convincing the clinic to discharge me to her instead of the church, then by bringing me to a cult de-programmer. After two days of them talking to me about the tactics cults use, it hit me – Jung Myung-seok was in prison for raping and sexually assaulting three women, and I'd spent 18 months in his cult. Months of grief followed as I realised how deeply I'd been deceived. I began slowly rebuilding my life, meeting other cult survivors, making new friends and forging a career for myself. In 2023, Jung Myung-seok was convicted of further sexual assaults, including rape, and sentenced to an extra 23 years in prison. Leaving a cult isn't easy, but sharing my story helps.
