Humbling of Lionel Messi's Inter Miami exposes flaw in Gianni Infantino's plan

Telegraph6 hours ago

Gianni Infantino took centre stage from Lionel Messi and his celebrating Inter Miami team-mates last October to make the surprise announcement that he had adjusted the Club World Cup qualification to accommodate the MLS franchise in its group stage.
Eight months later, Messi and his fellow Barcelona veterans in pink shirts – Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba – found themselves on the end of four first-half goals from Europe's leading team, in a last-16 Club World Cup tie that was over almost as soon as it began. Beaten 4-0, Inter Miami are out, the last MLS representatives in this home Club World Cup and however far behind Paris St-Germain they might have been in Atlanta, they have served their purpose for Infantino.
The Fifa president needed the star quality of Messi given that there was an absence of some of Europe's best supported teams in the competition, including the actual Barcelona, as well as Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. Although even Infantino would have struggled to find a reason to include the latter. A US tournament without Messi would have been a difficult sell to an American public that has shown itself occasionally indifferent to the big overseas clubs who have arrived to play in the height of summer.
It was clear from Cristiano Ronaldo's remarks from Saudi Arabia that he, too, was dangled the opportunity of playing for a Club World Cup team but preferred to keep himself fresh for next summer's real World Cup. Infantino's willingness to turn it into an invitational demonstrated the requirement for big names.
The problem with shoe-horning in Messi and Inter Miami, was that it was destined to show the US just how far its own club sides are behind those of Europe and South America. Asked how the gap might be closed, Miami coach Javier Mascherano, another Barcelona veteran, passed on the question. 'People involved in MLS know better than me what they have to do to progress in the league and be competitive,' he said.
Miami did at least hold their own in the group stages with a win over Porto and draws with Palmeiras and Al-Ahly of Egypt. PSG are a very different prospect. Having racked up a record margin of victory for any Champions League final – or its European Cup predecessor – over Inter Milan this month, that was always going to be a risk. Mascherano called the first half 'a bloodbath'.
There could have been many more in the second half, but PSG relented notably and Luis Enrique substituted some of his biggest names. Goalscorers Joao Neves and Achraf Hakimi came off as well as captain Marquinhos, midfielder Fabian Ruiz and star left-back Nuno Mendes. The pundits on DAZN, the streaming service that is providing free coverage in the US, did their best to talk up the efforts of Messi and his team-mates in the second half, but the frustration of Suarez told its own story.
Infantino had used Miami's victory in the Supporters' Shield element of the MLS season to justify their inclusion – they finished top of the league table. Nevertheless, the champions of MLS are the MLS Cup winners and that was LA Galaxy, after Miami went out in the play-offs first round to Atlanta United. LA Galaxy did not compete at the Club World Cup but then neither did the champions of England, Spain or Italy.
The mistakes from Miami that helped PSG race into a commanding lead in Atlanta showed that many MLS sides have to balance the European or South American stars in their sides with relative inexperience elsewhere. Poker-faced as ever, Messi did what he could. He had a promising free-kick towards the end of the game but after much dramatic anticipation it was struck into the defensive wall. He had a header saved in the second half and there was a fine flick into the path of Suarez which the latter mis-controlled.
Messi will have to wait longer for his rest. Miami are scheduled to be in Canada on Saturday for a game against strugglers Montreal. His club are sixth in the MLS Eastern Conference but have now played as many as four fewer games as some sides in the division. As things stand the Miami regular season does not conclude until October 18. Come next summer, back in the US, Messi will lead Argentina in their defence of the World Cup – a competition which will figure much larger in his mind than the one from which he and his Miami team-mates have just been eliminated.

Ramon Laureano and Gary Sanchez both had two hits for the Orioles, who won for only the third time in their last eight games. Kremer (7-7) limited Tampa Bay to three singles and one walk while striking out six batters. Keegan Akin and Felix Bautista each threw one inning of relief in a combined five-hitter. Bradley struck out two and issued one walk. Nationals 7, Angels 4 Drew Millas' tiebreaking RBI double in the 11th inning helped Washington secure a comeback victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif. With automatic runner Brady House starting on second base, Millas followed Daylen Lile's single with a double to left to make it 5-4. One out later, CJ Abrams (two hits, three RBIs) drilled a two-run triple to right off losing pitcher Connor Brogdon (1-1). In his third inning of work, Kyle Finnegan (1-2) picked up the win with a scoreless bottom of the 11th for Washington, which won the three-game set 2-1 and finished 4-5 on its West Coast road trip. Taylor Ward had three hits and an RBI for the Angels. Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 3 Addison Barger and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. each hit a solo home run to propel the visiting Toronto Blue Jays to a series victory over Boston. The home runs came back-to-back in the top of the first against Walker Buehler (5-6). It was Barger's ninth home run of the season, and homer No. 12 for Guerrero. Nathan Lukes collected two hits and an RBI for the Blue Jays. Carlos Narvaez hit his seventh home run for the Red Sox, who have lost seven of their last eight games. The Red Sox received two hits from rookie Roman Anthony, who has five hits in his last two games. Pirates 12, Mets 1 Oneil Cruz hit two home runs and had four RBIs, Henry Davis had four hits and host Pittsburgh completed a three-game sweep of New York. Ke'Bryan Hayes continued his torrid hitting with three more hits and two RBIs as the Pirates recorded their first sweep over the Mets since Aug. 14-16, 2015. It was just their second series sweep of the season. Cruz hit his 14th and 15th home runs of the season, and got the Pirates started quickly with a five-run first inning when he homered off Mets starter Frankie Montas (0-1). Montas made his second start in a Mets uniform and surrendered six runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over four innings. Astros 2, Cubs 0 Framber Valdez produced his fourth scoreless start of the season and Jose Altuve homered with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning as host Houston claimed the rubber match of a three-game interleague series with Chicago. Valdez (9-4) recorded his second consecutive scoreless start and eighth straight winning decision. He pitched into the seventh inning, allowing five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. His strikeout of Carson Kelly in the fourth moved him into 10th place in club history with 974. Jameson Taillon (7-6) started for the Cubs and departed after the Altuve dinger. Xander Bogaerts went 3-for-4 with a solo home run for San Diego, which has dropped two of three after a 4-2 homestand. Rockies 4, Brewers 3 (11 innings) Kyle Farmer's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted Colorado to a victory over Milwaukee, snapping a five-game losing streak. Colorado trailed 2-0 after six innings but plated one run in each of the last four frames to notch its 13th comeback victory of the season. The Rockies were down to their last out in the ninth when Orlando Arcia homered to left-center field off Brewers closer Trevor Megill. Farmer, who entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh, went 2-for-3 and got the game-winning single off Grant Anderson (1-3). Thairo Estrada went 3-for-5 with an RBI single in the 10th inning. After opener Lou Trivino allowed a run on the first two Royals batters of the game, Wrobleski (4-2) came on in the second inning and yielded three hits with a walk and struck out six until Kirby Yates took over in the eighth. The Dodgers have won 12 of their last 15 games. After pounding out 14 hits during Saturday's 9-5 win that snapped an 11-game home losing streak, Kansas City mustered five hits and struck out 10 times against four pitchers Sunday. Kris Bubic (6-6) allowed two runs, two walks and three hits and fanned five for the Royals, who have dropped seven of their last eight overall and went 1-12 at home in June. Mariners 6, Rangers 4 (12 innings) Donovan Solano's groundout in the 12th inning drove in the go-ahead run and Mitch Garver followed with a two-run homer as Seattle outlasted Texas to clinch a three-game series victory in Arlington, Texas. Solano and Garver's heroics off Texas reliever Cole Winn (0-1) capped a contest in which the teams combined to go 8-for-31 with runners in scoring position. Trent Thornton (2-0) pitched the final two innings, allowing one run and two walks and striking out two. Garver had three hits and four RBIs for Seattle on Sunday to lead its 13-hit attack. White Sox 5, Giants 2 Kyle Teel went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Chicago took the three-game series against visiting San Francisco. White Sox starter Jonathan Cannon, out since June 3 because of a back strain, gave up one run on three hits, walked three and struck out four in three innings in his return. Justin Verlander was effective through six frames, with one run on five hits and two walks. He fanned three for the Giants, who have dropped five of six. Guardiola worried that lack of rest after Club World Cup could 'destroy' Man City

June 30 (Reuters) - Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is concerned about the lack of rest his side will get ahead of the new Premier League season and said their involvement in the Club World Cup could "destroy" them. City wrapped up the previous Premier League season on May 25 and opened their Club World Cup campaign in Philadelphia just over three weeks later on June 18. They face Al-Hilal in Orlando on Saturday in the round of 16 and should City go on to reach the final on July 13 they will have a month to prepare for their new league campaign beginning on August 16. Guardiola said he did not know how much the Club World Cup would take out of his squad and told reporters to ask him about the impact later in the year. "I may say, so listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us," he added. "I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened. So we'll see." Guardiola said he understood comments made by former Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who said the expanded 32-team event, to be held once every four years during the pre-season, was football's worst idea. "Juergen, we fought together many, many times... when we went to UEFA meetings especially, or when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality, giving the managers and players more rest," Guardiola said. "So his comments didn't surprise me a lot ... I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well."

Jack Grealish happy to bide his time with clear goal in mind for new season

Jack Grealish appears set to leave Manchester City this summer but a move away from the Etihad is proving to be more difficult than first thought for the England winger despite huge interest Jack Grealish is happy to play a waiting game regarding his future despite Pep Guardiola telling him to leave. Grealish appears to have little future at Manchester City having dropped down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium. The situation for the England winger then got even worse after he was axed entirely for City's squad for the Club World Cup in America. A number of clubs have expressed an interest in potentially rescuing him including Napoli, Everton and Newcastle. ‌ But Grealish's £300k-per-week wages have proven to be a massive stumbling block, with none of those clubs able to afford that pay packet. One solution would be for City to massively subsidise Grealish's wages for any club that signs him. ‌ But as it stands, it appears that he is in no rush to find his next club. According to The Sun, Grealish is happy to bide his time and would be willing to wait for options as the transfer window progresses. City remain on Club World Cup duty with pre-season fixtures having been shelved as a result of the tournament. Grealish has time to consider options but will have to think carefully as he targets a place in England's World Cup squad this time next year. Guardiola recently opened up on discussions he held with Grealish regarding his future. He said: 'It was a conversation between him and the club and they decide. Jack is an exceptional player, the only reason why he didn't play last season is of course my decisions, and we decide that he has to play - and the club was honest, he was honest. 'We decide the best is that he has a place that he can feel he can play and come back to be the player that he was in the year of the treble or all his career at Aston Villa; without him it would have been impossible or more difficult to achieve the treble. 'The fact is the last two seasons he hasn't played much minutes and he has to come back to play and get the butterflies back in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.' ‌ Where should Grealish go next? Share your thoughts in the comments below Grealish is not the only Man City star who has a decision to make on an exit. Kyle Walker is also in a similar situation following his loan spell at AC Milan. Asked for an update on the duo, Guardiola replied: 'I don't have any news, it's the same for Jack. Regarding the links, I don't know. You have to ask.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
