HM Amit Shah directs formation of Central team on Himachal natural disasters
In a recent meeting, HM Shah was briefed about the increase in the frequency and intensity of cloudbursts, flash floods, landslides and torrential rainfall, causing widespread loss of life, damage to infrastructure, livelihoods and environmental degradation.
He immediately ordered the constitution of a multi-sectoral Central Team comprising experts from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Central Building Research Institute (CBRI) Roorkee, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, a Geologist, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Indore, the official said.
In the wake of floods, flash floods, and landslides during monsoon 2025 in different parts of Himachal Pradesh, the Central government has already deputed an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) in advance, without waiting for their memorandum, for on-the-spot first-hand assessment of the damages, said an official statement.
The IMCT is visiting the affected areas of the state from July 18-21, and as many as 13 teams of NDRF are deployed in the State for rescue and relief operations.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government stands firmly with the states in times of disasters without any discrimination, said the statement.
In this direction, a high-level committee chaired by HM Shah has already approved an outlay of Rs 2006.40 crore to Himachal Pradesh for recovery and reconstruction in areas affected by disasters like floods, landslides and cloudbursts for 2023, and has also released the first instalment of Rs 451.44 crore on July 7, it said.
To support the affected people, the Central government has already released the first instalment of the Central share of Rs 198.80 crore to Himachal Pradesh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) on June 18.
The Central government has also provided all logistical assistance to all states, including Himachal Pradesh, including deployment of requisite National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, Army teams and Air Force support.

Courts overflooded: Delhi HC asks Lakshmi Puri, Saket Gokhale to resolve row
New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) In the defamation case filed by former diplomat Lakshmi Murdeshwar Puri against TMC MP Saket Gokhale, the Delhi High Court on Thursday urged them to settle the issue saying 'courts are overflooded". A bench of Justices Anil Kshetarpal and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar proposed a meeting to settle the matter after noting that Gokhle tendered an apology, which was accepted by Puri. 'You're in public life, respected public figures. If both parties can see sit together and try to resolve the dispute. Please take into consideration court are already overflooded," the bench said. The court was dealing with Gokhale's appeal against a single judge's July 1, 2024 verdict restraining the TMC leader from publishing further on social media or any online platform against Puri. The single judge directed him to apologise to her and pay Rs 50 lakh in damages. The bench on Thursday noted that besides apology, property had also been attached in regard to the payment. 'Attachment to continue," the bench said. Both senior advocate Maninder Singh, representing Puri, and senior advocate Amit Sibal, appearing for Gokhale, told the bench that they will talk to their clients and consider court's proposal of settlement. 12-Year-Old Asks Father To Pay 1 Crore For Custody, Top Court Warns Mother
New Delhi: Hearing a child custody case, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai warned a 12-year-old girl's mother against "spoiling her mind" after the child demanded Rs 1 crore from her father if he wanted her to stay with him. The child, the court noted, also attacked her father with a stick and warned her mother that this would "come back" to her someday. Senior Advocate PR Patwalia, appearing for the father, told the court that the couple had a matrimonial dispute, after which the district court granted the child's custody to the father. The mother's challenge to the order in the high court is pending, but she has not handed over the child's custody, the lawyer said. The high court rejected the father's contempt case, and he approached the top court. Mr Patwalia told the bench, also comprising Justice K Vinod Chandran, that in September last year, the Supreme Court asked the district legal services authority to appoint a paralegal volunteer to ensure that the father's visitation rights are implemented. At this point, Chief Justice Gavai recounted that the child had also attacked her father with a stick in the past. "Now, kindly see what happened yesterday. Only yesterday, again the girl has declined to come with me. And she says that 'you are harassing my mother, you have filed a contempt (case), you please give Rs 1 crore, otherwise I will not go. On top of that, in the school records, the mother has deleted the name of the father," Mr Patwali said. He added that "punishing the mother is not going to achieve anything" and sought mediation in the matter. When the mother's counsel, Anubha Agrawal, said she was open to mediation, Chief Justice Gavai told the mother, "You are unnecessarily dragging your child, you are spoiling the career of your child, you are spoiling her mind. This will come back someday." The court eventually referred the matter to a mediator after both sides agreed. "Taking into consideration that the dispute is a matrimonial dispute, we consider it appropriate to refer the parties to mediation. With the consent of parties, we appoint Hon'ble Ms. Justice Ritu Bahri, Former Chief Justice of High Court of Uttarakhand as Mediator. The Mediator shall consider all the issues between the parties," it said.
