Prithviraj Sukumaran Mourns Stuntman SM Raju's Death: ‘So Many Moments Of Magic…'
Last Updated: SM Raju, a stunt veteran in the Tamil film industry, died on the sets of Arya's upcoming film Vettuvan. Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed his grief. In a tragic accident, renowned stunt artist S.M. Raju lost his life on Sunday during the shoot of the Tamil movie Vettuvan, starring Arya and directed by Pa Ranjith. Raju was performing a high-risk car toppling stunt in Tamil Nadu's Nagapattinam district when the horrific crash occurred. The news of his demise left the film industry in shock. Now, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran has paid a tribute to Raju, remembering his courage and skill in creating unforgettable moments, and said that he will forever be missed. On Monday, Prithviraj Sukumaran took to his Instagram stories to share a picture of SM Raju, and penned a note, expressing his grief over the stunt master's demise. He wrote, 'Rest in peace Raju! So many moments of magic that would have been impossible to film without your skill and guts! You will be missed forever!" Actor Vishal, who had collaborated with Raju on numerous action-heavy films, also expressed his grief on social media. Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Vishal wrote, 'So difficult to digest the fact that stunt artist Raju passed away while doing a car toppling sequence for jammy @arya_offl and @beemji Ranjith's film this morning. Have known Raju for so many years and he has performed so many risky stunts in my films time and time again as he is such a brave person." Deeply moved by the loss, Vishal went on to assure support for Raju's bereaved family, stating, 'My deepest condolences and may his soul rest in peace. May God give more strength to his family for their grave loss. Not just this tweet but will definitely be there for his family's future, being from the same film industry and also for his contribution to so many films. From the bottom of my heart and as my duty I extend my support for them. God bless." Disturbing video clips from the set show a speeding car overturning violently. Crew members are seen rushing to the crash site and pulling Raju from the mangled vehicle, only to discover he had not survived the impact. What was intended as a controlled action sequence ended in a heartbreaking loss. As of now, neither Arya nor director Pa Ranjith has made a public statement regarding the accident. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lead India at Japan Open Super 750, aiming to end their title drought. Star Indian men's doubles shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will aim to extend their consistent performance on tour and end their title drought as they lead the country's challenge at the Japan Open Super 750 beginning Tuesday. Ranked world No. 15, Satwik-Chirag have reached three semifinals this season and made the quarterfinals at the Indonesia Open in June. After the semifinal finishes at the Malaysia and India Open in January, Satwik-Chirag missed multiple weeks because of the former's health problems and Chirag's lingering back injury. Now fit, the duo reached the semifinals at the Singapore Open and the quarterfinals in Indonesia. Satwik-Chirag will commence their campaign against Korea's Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju. In singles, Lakshya Sen and double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu will aim to regain form at the USD 950,000 event. Lakshya has struggled this season with multiple first-round exits, his best performance being a quarterfinal finish at the All England. Hampered by a back injury that forced him to retire against Lin Chun-Yi at the Singapore Open, he showed glimpses of regaining touch during a narrow three-game defeat to world No. 3 Shi Yu Qi in Indonesia. Lakshya, now ranked 18th, starts against China's Wang Zheng Xing. Sindhu, ranked 16th, had her best performance this year with a quarterfinal at the India Open in January. The former world champion, who turned 30 this month, has faced four first-round and three second-round exits in 2025. If Sindhu wins her first-round match, she is expected to face third seed Akane Yamaguchi in the second round. Among others, Unnati Hooda, a Taipei Open semifinalist earlier in 2025, faces seventh seed Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand in the opening round, while Anupama Upadhyaya takes on fellow Indian Rakshitha Ramraj. In men's doubles, Hariharan Amsakarunan and Ruban Kumar Rethinasabapathi will face Korea's third seeds Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae. Women's doubles pairs Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi and the Panda sisters, Rutaparna and Swetaparna, are also competing. Schedule for July 15 Kokona Ishikawa-Maiko Kawazoe vs Rutuparna & Swetaparna Panda: 1:10 pm IST (With PTI Inputs) view comments First Published: July 14, 2025, 10:05 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
