KILDARE HAVE capped a remarkable 12 months of hurling success with a landmark Joe McDonagh Cup title win, securing their place in the Leinster SHC for the first time since 2004.
Brian Dowling's side only won the Christy Ring Cup 12 months ago and, initially at least, would have been happy to simply retain their Joe McDonagh Cup status this term.
They even lost their opening group game to Kerry, their ninth defeat from nine games in the competition, but have bounced back in remarkable fashion since then to claim a historic win.
Tied at half-time in their first-ever McDonagh Cup final, and fortunate to be level at that stage given the number of chances Laois wasted, Kildare cut loose after the break to beat Laois comfortably for the second time in the competition.
Second-half goals from Jack Sheridan and substitute Jack Travers proved crucial, while free-taker David Qualter finished with 13 points on a famous day for the county.
But it was a powerful collective performance with centre-back Cian Boran standing out in a strong defence.
Kildare, who have already secured Division 1B hurling for 2026, will get an immediate chance to test themselves at the higher level next weekend when they play Dublin in an All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final.
Laois have at least another week to run in their campaign too, with Dublin set to visit Portlaoise in the MacCarthy Cup.
Just like the Dublin footballers a week earlier on the same turf, Laois reflected on a first half of squandered chances, which cost them dearly in the end.
The half-time stats made for painful reading for them: 11 wides, five point attempts that dropped short and a shot at goal that was saved.
Kildare were more efficient when the ball was at the opposite Davin End and started brighter, showing no signs of anticipated nerves.
It was their first final at the grade, and they were bidding to return to Leinster championship hurling for the first time since losing to Westmeath 21 years ago.
But they were calm and composed and deserved their early 0-4 to 0-2 lead with Sheridan, James Burke and Qualter picking off three terrific points from play.
They showed their athleticism in the 18th minute when they snuffed out a Laois goal chance and worked a speedy move up the pitch that ended with a free and a handy Qualter tap over.
Free-taker Qualter finished the half with seven points to his credit and was influential in open play too.
Kildare retained their two-point lead approaching the half-hour mark when they were 0-9 to 0-7 ahead.
But with the Laois wides tally into double figures at that stage, the scoreline flattered the Lilywhites.
Three Laois points in a row from James Keyes and free-taker Tomas Keyes amounted to a strong finish to the half from them, levelling it up at 0-11 apiece at the break.
And Laois held onto that momentum with their goal coming just seconds after the restart.
Paddy Purcell raced clear with the ball from the throw-in, and though his eventual shot off the turf was saved, Ben Conroy came sliding in and bundled it to the net.

Laois were desperate to kick on from there and to impose themselves on the game, but couldn't.
Instead, it was Kildare that reeled off two separate bursts of three points, taking a three-point lead at the hour mark and then killing off Laois with the two goals.
Travers grabbed his in the 61st minute, following up on the rebound after Sheridan's initial shot was blocked.
Five minutes later, Sheridan netted himself, shrugging off a jersey pull and darting beyond Ryan Mullaney to get a low shot away that hit the net.
Kildare sub Muiris Curtin pointed in the 68th minute and punched the air in delight, realising that the job was done at that stage.

Jason Foley: 'Extra sweet' beating a couple of Ulster teams
For many years it was considered an itch that Kerry could not scratch. Getting past Ulster opposition in the All-Ireland series. It all started with that infamous Tyrone 'swarm' in the 2003 All-Ireland semi-final and was followed by defeats to the Red Hand and Armagh on days when Sam Maguire was handed out. In more recent times the aforementioned Ulster duo got the better of the Kingdom at the penultimate stage That said, there were days when Kerry exacted revenge. And on their way to winning their 39th All-Ireland title, Jack O'Connor's side accounted for four Ulster sides, with old nemesis Armagh and Tyrone dismissed in between wins over Cavan and Donegal. It's the morning after Kerry's latest triumph, time to reflect on a job well done against Jim McGuinness's side in Sunday's decider. "It was very special, the manner in which we won it, it was a complete performance bar a couple of plays," was how full-back Jason Foley summed it up, when speaking to RTÉ Sport's Marty Morrissey. The Ulster question was then put to the Ballydonoghue clubman. "I suppose it's extra sweet when you beat a couple of them in a row and having performed so well in the last three games," he said. "There were a lot of critics out there saying we hadn't won an All-Ireland before beating a lot of Ulster teams." But when all is said and done, reclaiming Sam was paramount, with the All-Star defender adding: " At the same time it doesn't really matter as long as you win at the end of the day, once you bring Sam Maguire home. That was the main thing for us." Kerry's fast start against Donegal set the tone for what was to follow, with the Ulster champions immediately on the back foot. "It felt on the field like a fierce collective performance for that ten to 15-minute spell," was how goalkeeper Shane Ryan viewed his side's early intent. "I know we probably went off script for the next ten minutes. Getting a good start really settles you on the field as well; it encourages to express yourself, back yourself, and back each other. When you get that performance early on in an All-Ireland final, it is very satisfying. "Donegal had spells on the ball which they got scores off. We had to win our own kickout. We had fellas coming up with plays, coming up with scores that would not be renowned with coming up with scores all year." Kerry's only defeat in Championship 2025 came against Meath in their final group game. Observers, including many from within the county, questioned whether Jack O'Connor's side could turn things around thereafter. "We won the League and we won the Munster Championship, so we played a lot of good football coming up to Meath and played a lot of good football since. I suppose coming home from Meath it was a case of not throwing the toys out of the pram and not going completely off script. "We knew we had footballers in the dressing room. We also got tighter as a unit afterwards and shut the doors of the dressing room a small bit, galvanise ourselves and use each other for energy. "It really united the coaching group as well and that is something powerful when you have 50 people in a dressing room, four or five nights a week striving towards the one thing. That was the biggest thing that drove us on over the last six or seven weeks."

Paudie Clifford says Kerry felt 'disrespected' by pundits who labeled them a one man team. The Kingdom's critics were referring to David Clifford, and they got their answer in the victories over Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal to what was always nonsense analysis. 'I suppose the new rules have probably given him a new lease of life. But he's had an unbelievable year - delighted for him." Clifford continued: 'We were close against Armagh last year and we'd be our own worst critics as well. 'We admitted that we've under-performed definitely as a team over some of the years. 'But I suppose with the work we put in and the players we have there, for them things to be said, it's not nice to hear it." Kerry had two goal chances at the start of the second half against Armagh that would almost certainly have paved the way for a victory in last year's semi-final that would have landed them in an All-Ireland final against Galway. The year before they were narrowly beaten by Dublin in the All-Ireland Final after landing the Sam Maguire in 2022 against Galway. And the suspicion is that under the new rules and with the Clifford brothers to the fore, more All-Irelands will follow with the Fossa pair winning their second Celtic Cross yesterday. Paudie Clifford had a whopping 76 touches as he ran the Kerry challenge. "Was it?' he said of his possessions. 'I didn't feel like that. I was just happy to be able to try and play make and create as many chances as I can for the other lads. 'It was an enjoyable game to play because everything did work out for us. But if things went the other way, it wouldn't have been." David Clifford's two pointer after the hooter at the end of the first half was a huge moment sending Kerry in seven points up and totally in command. "It was massive,' said his older brother. 'But at the same time, we had in the back of our heads that when Donegal played Monaghan, (Rory) Beggan scored a two-pointer just before the half and Donegal still came out strong, which they did. 'They came out strong in the second half (last Sunday) and won a lot of ball around the middle and got it back to four. They could have got it back to three. 'So after the Monaghan game, we were in no way resting on our laurels. 'We just said we have to keep going, keep going and just keep being kind of the aggressors. Keep taking our scores when we could. Thankfully we did."
