System flags dubious links

The government has launched "TISI Watch", an AI-powered system designed to remove substandard products from online platforms, aiming to enhance consumer safety and fair competition in Thai e-commerce. Deputy government spokeswoman Sasikarn Wattanachan said the initiative, led by Industry Minister Akanat Promphan, was rolled out on July 7. The system operates 24/7, analysing suspicious product links for potential violations of Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) rules. Over the past five months of a pilot test, TISI Watch has flagged more than 125,000 suspicious links and taken down over 2,800. Legal action is under way in 777 cases, particularly involving major e-commerce platforms. Products frequently found to be non-compliant include food-grade plastics, children's toys, motorcycle exhaust pipes, power strips, power banks and helmets -- all posing safety risks. The system will soon expand to detect counterfeit goods and fake licences, with a public tip-off channel available via the "Report to Industry" Line account, she said.

Thai ESG X funds garner B32.2bn in investment

Thai ESG Extra (Thai ESG X) funds attracted strong interest from investors, particularly holders of matured long-term equity funds (LTFs), tallying total investments of 32.2 billion baht by the end of the offering period on June 30, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Of the amount, 25.1 billion baht came from LTF conversions, while 7.08 billion was new capital. The converted LTF value represents 79% of eligible LTF holders with portfolios of less than 500,000 baht, highlighting the success of encouraging sustainable investing among retail investors, noted the SEC. Thai ESG X funds are a government-backed initiative to encourage investment in companies focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors. The measure also aims to enhance the stability of Thailand's capital markets by offering tax incentives for new investments in Thai ESG X. "The success of Thai ESG X demonstrates investors' growing interest in supporting Thai listed companies that prioritise sustainability," said Pornanong Budsaratragoon, secretary-general of the SEC. These funds also incentivise firms still in development to align with ESG standards, in line with the country's sustainable development goals, she said. According to Mrs Pornanong, the programme represents a coordinated effort between the SEC, the Stock Exchange of Thailand and the Association of Investment Management Companies. The linked system that verifies LTF holdings across the industry can serve as a foundation for future innovations in investor services, she said. Thai ESG X funds, which were launched on May 2, offer two tiers of tax benefits. For general investors, investment in Thai ESG X allows a personal income tax deduction of up to 30% of assessable income, capped at 300,000 baht. Investors must hold the units for at least five full calendar years from the date of investment. For LTF unitholders as of March 11, 2025 who opted to switch 100% of their LTF units to Thai ESG X funds from May to June, 2025, they can claim up to 500,000 baht in tax deductions over the tax years 2025-29, comprising 300,000 baht in 2025 and 50,000 baht per year in subsequent years. For example, an investor who switches LTF units worth 380,000 baht to Thai ESG X can deduct 300,000 baht in the 2025 tax year and 20,000 baht annually from 2026 to 2029. Mrs Pornanong said ongoing market volatility led to new investments in Thai ESG X funds tallying less than 10 billion baht.

Trump tariff threat clouds final day of BRICS summit

RIO DE JANEIRO (BRAZIL) - US President Donald Trump's decision to hit "anti-American" BRICS nations -- including China and India -- with an extra 10 percent trade tariff roiled the final day of the bloc's summit in Rio de Janeiro Monday. Trump threatened the 11-nation grouping -- which includes some of the world's fastest-emerging economies -- late on Sunday, after they warned against his "indiscriminate," damaging and illegal tariff hikes. "Any Country aligning themselves with the Anti-American policies of BRICS, will be charged an ADDITIONAL 10% Tariff," Trump wrote on social media. BRICS members account for about half the world's population and 40 percent of global economic output. Members China, Russia and South Africa responded coolly to Trump's latest verbal barrage, insisting the bloc was not seeking confrontation with Washington. But host Brazil's leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was less diplomatic. "We are sovereign nations," Lula said. "We don't want an emperor." Conceived two decades ago as a forum for fast-growing economies, BRICS has come to be seen as a Chinese-driven effort to curb US global influence. But it is a quickly expanding and often divergent grouping -- bringing together arch US foes like Iran and Russia, with some of Washington's closest allies in Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Some US allies inside the bloc had tried to blunt criticism of Trump by not mentioning him or the United States by name in the summit statement. Saudi Arabia -- one of the biggest purchasers of US high-tech weapons -- even kept its foreign minister away from Sunday's talks and a BRICS group photo, seemingly to avoid Washington's ire. But such diplomatic gestures were lost on the US president who said "there will be no exceptions to this policy." - No shows - In April, Trump threatened a slew of punitive duties on dozens of economies, before backing off in the face of a fierce market sell-off. Now he is threatening to impose unilateral levies on trading partners unless they reach "deals" by August 1, with BRICS nations seemingly faced with higher tariffs than planned. It cannot have helped that BRICS leaders also condemned the recent US and Israeli bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities -- a show of solidarity with fellow member Iran. Beijing on Monday insisted BRICS was not seeking confrontation with the United States. "China has repeatedly stated its position that trade and tariff wars have no winners and protectionism offers no way forward," foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said. Beijing also defended the bloc as "an important platform for cooperation between emerging markets and developing countries." "It advocates openness, inclusivity, and win-win cooperation," Mao said. "It does not engage in camp confrontation and is not targeted at any country," she added. The Kremlin echoed that message with spokesman Dmitry Peskov telling Russian media that BRICS cooperation "has never been and will never be directed against third countries." The political punch of this year's summit has been depleted by the absence of China's Xi Jinping, who skipped the meeting for the first time in his 12 years as president. The Chinese leader is not the only notable absentee. Russian President Vladimir Putin, charged with war crimes in Ukraine, also opted to stay away, participating via video link.
