Mahesh Bhatt says Parveen Babi ‘spiralled into madness', recalls her confessing ‘darr lagta hai': ‘What happened to her was an unimaginable tragedy'
During an appearance on The Himanshu Mehta Show, he said, 'Prior to coming to this interview, I was writing about her final spiralling into what is called madness. All attempts were made to make her see that once she had that kind of breakdown, there's no way she should try and fit herself back into this fiercely competitive space. She should have withdrawn, as she had a physiological vulnerability. But I think once you have tasted this business, the high of the arc lights, it's very difficult to turn your back on it. But what happened to her was an unimaginable tragedy.'
In the same interaction, Mahesh said that he still remembers Parveen's words clearly: 'Darr lagta hai (I feel scared).' He also shared that though it was a glamorous side that she showed the world, at heart, she was a simple woman. He said, 'Behind closed doors, she was a simple woman from Junagadh, Gujarat, who wanted to put oil in her head and cook food at home. But the clothes she used to wear were very glamorous, so that she looked like a superstar. But on the inside, she was a simple girl.'
In a previous interaction with BBC News Hindi, Mahesh spoke about witnessing Parveen's 'mood disorder' and her eventual 'collapse.' He said, 'I saw her go through her collapse. I went through it with her. And when you see someone breaking down in front of you… I saw her leave in the morning for her shoot with her makeup on. But when I came back in the evening, she was shivering and sitting in a corner like an animal. She kept saying, 'Someone is going to kill me.' She was suffering from schizophrenia,' he said.
Mahesh admitted that he tried 'a lot to help her out' but 'such kind of diseases take a toll.' 'When that relationship collapsed, it ended on a painful note,' he said. Parveen Babi passed away in 2005.

Ranbir Kapoor Thinks Wife Alia Bhatt Is Made Of 'Different Stuff': 'Her Ambition To…'
Mahesh Bhatt says daughter Alia Bhatt is a 'self-made girl,' praises her drive, and reveals Ranbir Kapoor finds her ambition 'astounding.' Alia Bhatt may have been launched by Karan Johar in Student of the Year, but her father Mahesh Bhatt says her rise has been entirely her own doing. Speaking on The Himanshu Mehta Show, the veteran filmmaker opened up about how Alia's ambition continues to surprise even those closest to her — including her husband, actor Ranbir Kapoor. 'I didn't launch Alia Bhatt. Karan Johar launched her. I didn't know she had so much thirst for acting in her. She gave the audition herself. I just got to know they loved her work. I was shocked because I hadn't seen any such traits in her even remotely. I'm very happy she's a self-made girl," Mahesh said, reflecting on his daughter's unexpected journey into films. What impresses Mahesh most is Alia's appetite for risk and reinvention. 'Alia has astounded me! What is unique about her is that she has a taste for taking risks and she's taken the detours into diverse narratives." Now a mother to daughter Raha Kapoor, Alia has entered a new chapter in both her personal and professional life. 'I see a new depth in her. With this young girl becoming a mother, there's a coming-of-age of a different kind, a different kind of maturity in her. I'm also looking forward to her new films which would be coming out now," Mahesh added. Up next, Alia is leading Alpha, a spy thriller from the YRF Spy Universe, releasing this Christmas. She'll also reunite onscreen with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Love & War next year. When asked about Ranbir's view of Alia, Mahesh shared a revealing moment. 'He says, 'Alia is made of different stuff.' When I ask him, 'What do you mean?,' he says, 'Her ambition to do more and more and more is unbelievably astounding!' While he's a person who's very laid-back and comforted, and he just wants to do enough. She's a go-getter." Mahesh also weighed in on the ongoing conversation around nepotism, acknowledging that while access does make things easier, it's not the whole story. 'Nepotism is a reality, but it's also not. Just because my child is talented, that doesn't mean I disqualify them," he said. He added, 'But it's definitely easy for them. Because access is success. Talented people don't even get access for years. It's important to understand that the voice that's been raised against nepotism, there's a collective anger behind that. That's why we get to hear about that every other day." First Published: July 28, 2025, 11:53 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ‘Alia Bhatt is self-made, ambitious unlike Ranbir Kapoor who is laidback,' says Mahesh Bhatt: ‘She has changed, matured after welcoming Raha'
The tag of nepotism has always chased Alia Bhatt despite her best efforts to negate that. After making her debut with Karan Johar's 2012 hit campus caper Student of the Year, Alia has proven her acting prowess over the years with critically acclaimed performances in films like Imtiaz Ali's Highway (2014), Abhishek Chaubey's Udta Punjab (2016), Meghna Gulzar's Raazi (2018), and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). Alia's father, veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, also believes his daughter is 'self-made.' 'I didn't launch Alia Bhatt. Karan Johar launched her. I didn't know she had so much thirst for acting in her. She gave the audition herself. I just got to know they loved her work. I was shocked because I hadn't seen any such traits in her even remotely. I'm very happy she's a self-made girl,' said Mahesh. On The Himanshu Mehta Show, the filmmaker further revealed that the young generation today approach her for pictures only to flaunt that they met Alia Bhatt's father. 'Alia has astounded me! What is unique about her is that she has a taste for taking risks and she's taken the detours into diverse narratives,' added Mahesh. Alia's father also pointed out that she's gone through 'an alchemical change' after the birth of her daughter Raha Kapoor in 2022. 'I see a new depth in her. With this young girl becoming a mother, there's a coming-of-age of a different kind, a different kind of maturity in her. I'm also looking forward to her new films which would be coming out now,' said Mahesh. Alia will be next seen headlining Shiv Rawail's spy thriller Alpha, which is a part of Aditya Chopra's YRF Spy Universe. Backed by Yash Raj Films, it's slated to release in cinemas this Christmas on December 25. Next year, Alia will also star alongside real-life husband Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in Bhansali's romantic drama Love & War. Mahesh Bhatt also revealed that even Ranbir is in awe of Alia. 'He says, 'Alia is made of different stuff.' When I ask him, 'What do you mean?,' he says, 'Her ambition to do more and more and more is unbelievably astounding!' While he's a person who's very laid-back and comforted, and he just wants to do enough. She's a go-getter,' added Mahesh. Also Read — Alia Bhatt likes people watching to cheer herself up on bad days: 'I'm not looking into their bedrooms, but..' The filmmaker agreed that while there are talented nepo babies like Alia and Ranbir, one can't deny the merit that the discussion around nepotism holds. 'Nature is very fair. It's not important that the rose would bloom in only your garden. Nature spreads its jewels across the world. Nepotism is a reality, but it's also not. Just because my child is talented, that doesn't mean I disqualify them,' argued Mahesh. 'But it's definitely easy for them. Because access is success. Talented people don't even get access for years. It's important to understand that the voice that's been raised against nepotism, there's a collective anger behind that. That's why we get to hear about that every other day,' added Mahesh Bhatt.
