Humberside Police officer 'honoured' to receive bravery award

BBC News23-06-2025
Police officer Daniel Boothby said he felt "very proud and honoured" after winning the overall Humberside Police & Federation Bravery Award. PC Boothby, 24, saved a woman in distress from a cliff at Flamborough in May 2024, endangering himself and risking his life to do so, the federation said. He is now set to represent Humberside at the National Police Bravery Awards in London in July. "I felt like I was just doing my job, you're doing what any one else would do in that situation but everyone has been very supportive," he said.
PC Boothby has been working as a serving police officer for the last three years. He said he always wanted to work in a job that "helps people" and he enjoyed "working for his community, as cliche as that sounds." The annual Police Bravery Awards, organised by the Police Federation of England and Wales, honour "some of the finest officers" who have performed acts of bravery, while on or off duty.PC Boothby said the incident was: "One of those moments where you stop with your policing head and think actually there's a human being in front of me. You have to live with that for the rest of your life." He said his first thought was: "I hope my mum doesn't find out what I'm about to do, but it was just a natural split second decision." PC Boothby said he struggled to sleep for a while after the incident. However, he added: "I would have done the exact same thing again. Anyone in this job would have done the exact same." PC Boothby said he was "excited and nervous" about the national awards ceremony and was looking foward to representing the Humber region.

Ex-trader Tom Hayes wins appeal to overturn rate-rigging conviction at UK top court

LONDON, July 23 (Reuters) - Tom Hayes, the first trader ever jailed for interest rate rigging, had his conviction overturned by Britain's top court on Wednesday after a years-long fight to clear his name. The UK Supreme Court unanimously allowed Hayes' appeal, overturning his 2015 conviction of eight counts of conspiracy to defraud by manipulating Libor, a now-defunct benchmark interest rate. Hayes had initially received a 14-year prison sentence, later reduced to 11 years on appeal. He served five and a half years before being released on licence in 2021. A former star Citigroup (C.N), opens new tab and UBS (UBSG.S), opens new tab trader, Hayes became the face of the global Libor scandal and challenged his conviction during three days of hearings at the UK Supreme Court along with Carlo Palombo, 46, a former Barclays (BARC.L), opens new tab trader who was found guilty in 2019 of skewing Libor's euro equivalent, Euribor. The court also quashed Palombo's conviction. He was given a four-year sentence in 2019. Hayes and Palombo had argued that their convictions depended on a definition of Libor and Euribor which assumes there is an absolute legal bar on a bank's commercial interests being taken into account when setting rates. The Libor rate, phased out in 2023, was designed to reflect banks' short-term funding costs and based on daily estimates from a group of banks as to how much they would expect to pay to borrow funds from each other for a range of currencies and periods. Hayes' challenge at the Supreme Court followed a landmark U.S. court decision in 2022 which overturned the Libor rigging convictions of two former Deutsche Bank traders.

Intruder inspects naked woman as she sleeps next to her partner in Marbella

A home intruder has been caught on camera repeatedly inspecting a woman as she slept naked in her Marbella, Spain home. Homeowners Pilar and Alex found that they had been burgled after €300, around $350, went missing from their home in Costa del Sol on June 2. But while the couple reviewed their CCTV, they made an even more disturbing discovery after footage showed a masked thief stood over their bed as they slept. In the sinister clip, which was released by the couple, the burglar was seen returning multiple times to the couple's room throughout a 32 minute period. The thief appeared to fixate on Pilar, with the video showing him repeatedly flashing his torch over her body. Speaking to local media the woman said: 'He entered our bedroom eight times to look at my private parts', after deciding to release the footage in the hope of catching the 'sick predator'. Local police are now investigating the case and are analyzing the security footage to identify the suspect, but no arrests have been made as of yet. The thief is said to have taken 300 euros from the couple's home, but did not steal any other valuables, leading Pilar to believe that his intentions were not to rob the couple's home, but rather to prey on her as she slept. Pilar's 18-year-old son was sleeping in the room next door at the time of the incident. She said: 'That man didn't come to my house to steal, he came to do something to me. 'I was alone the night before. What if he'd come then?' Her partner Alex expressed how Pilar 'felt violated' and called the thief a 'sick predator'. Pilar has also spoken out about how the terrifying ordeal has affected her psychologically, and described how she now suffers from recurring nightmares and has to sleep with all of her doors and windows closed. She is now undergoing psychological treatment to cope with the trauma she has suffered, she said. It is believed the thief entered the house through a terrace door. The horrifying incident comes as other residents in the city have been warned to beef up their security systems after a 'terrifying' burglar remains at large. Chilling footage shows the moment a man in a mask and a gray hoodie broke into a series of villas between San Pedro de Alcantara in Marbella and Benahavis. The brazen thief, dubbed the San Pedro Prowler, is seen picking locks with a sharp implement, which locals said he could use as 'a weapon if he needs it to be'. The menacing figure then calmly walks off with his hands filled with goods, including luxury handbags and jewelry. Among the recent stolen items include €10,000 in cash, around $11,740, and a €30,000, about $35,000, watch. The robber appears to have been wearing no shoes and just had socks on during his raids, seemingly to avoid alerting anyone inside the homes to his presence. Neighborhoods he has targeted include Guadalmina, and La Quinta, in upmarket Benahavis.
