Singapore to build 80,000 new homes across 10 sites under URA Draft Master Plan 2025

SINGAPORE, June 27 — At least 80,000 new public and private homes are set to be built across more than 10 areas in Singapore over the next 10 to 15 years, according to the Urban Redevelopment Authority's (URA) Draft Master Plan 2025.
The blueprint outlines developments in both city-centre and suburban locations to boost housing supply and bring residents closer to workplaces and public transport links, according to a report published in The Straits Times today.
Up to 5,000 private homes are planned for Newton, while Paterson, near Orchard Road, could see 1,000 new units; both neighbourhoods will be transformed into mixed-use urban centres with integrated transport, retail, and recreational features.
'In Newton, a new Village Square will rise next to the MRT station and food centre, while Monk's Hill Road will become a park and a green corridor will link to Emerald Hill,' said URA.
Paterson's makeover will include a new integrated development above Orchard MRT station, incorporating the former Institute of Education site.
In the one-north precinct, the Dover-Medway area may house 6,000 public and private units in its first phase, while Mediapolis could add 5,000 private homes; both are intended to accommodate workers in the tech and biomedical sectors nearby.
URA said Dover-Medway's redevelopment would consider existing leases and operations, with advance notice provided to affected parties; the Dover campus of the Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) will not be impacted.
Kranji's former racecourse will be turned into a housing estate with around 14,000 new homes, located near the Kranji Nature Corridor and other green and blue spaces.
Sembawang Shipyard and Paya Lebar Air Base (PLAB) are also being studied for future housing; the shipyard site, due to close in 2028, could be redeveloped into a waterfront district, while PLAB's relocation from 2030 will free up 800ha for a new eastern town.
The new PLAB town will be linked to areas like Defu via green and blue networks, and heritage features such as old runway sections will be preserved and repurposed.
Additional central sites identified earlier, such as Pearl's Hill, Marina South, Bukit Timah Turf City, Mount Pleasant, and the former Keppel Golf Course, are also in the pipeline for housing developments.

WASHINGTON, June 28 — Conflicts and related fatalities have more than tripled since the early 2000s, fuelling extreme poverty, the World Bank said yesterday. Economies in fragile and conflict-affected regions have become 'the epicentre of global poverty and food insecurity, a situation increasingly shaped by the frequency and intensity of conflict,' the bank added in a new study. This year, 421 million people get by on less than US$3 (RM12.70) a day in places hit by conflict or instability — a situation of extreme poverty — and the number is poised to hit 435 million by 2030. Global attention has been focused on conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East for the past three years, said World Bank Group chief economist Indermit Gill. But 'half of the countries facing conflict or instability today have been in such conditions for 15 years or more,' he added. Currently, 39 economies are classified as facing such conditions, and 21 of them are in active conflict, the Washington-based development lender said. The list includes Ukraine, Somalia, South Sudan and the West Bank and Gaza. It also includes Iraq although not Iran. The report flagged that moves to prevent conflict can bring high returns, with timely interventions being 'far more cost-effective than responding after violence erupts.' It also said that some of these economies have advantages that could be used to reignite growth, noting that places like Zimbabwe, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo are rich in minerals key to clean tech like electric vehicles and solar panels. 'Economic stagnation — rather than growth — has been the norm in economies hit by conflict and instability over the past decade and a half,' said Ayhan Kose, World Bank Group deputy chief economist. The bank's report noted that high-intensity conflicts, which kill more than 150 per million people, are typically followed by a cumulative fall of around 20 percent in GDP per capita after five years. — AFP

SINGAPORE, June 27 — Singapore tycoon Peter Lim is not stepping away from Valencia CF, as the Spanish football club announced it has secured €322 million (RM1.6 billion) in financing to complete its long-delayed new stadium, the Nou Mestalla. Scheduled to open in 2027, the 70,044-seat stadium will be Spain's fourth largest, behind the redeveloped Nou Camp, Santiago Bernabeu, and Metropolitano Stadium, according to a report in The Straits Times today. Valencia president Kiat Lim, Peter Lim's son, hailed the financing as a 'historic milestone', saying it would enable the club to deliver a 'world-class stadium' and reflects growing global investor confidence in the club. The financing includes a €237 million note issuance with a 28-year maturity and an €85 million five-year loan, which will be repaid using proceeds from the sale of the current Mestalla site. 'This new stadium is a game-changer — in revenue potential and fan experience,' said Kiat, who took over as president in March. The club also envisions the stadium becoming a multifunctional venue hosting entertainment, business, and leisure activities, helping transform it into a regional hub. Kiat said the venue will operate '365 days a year' and match the club's long-term vision, describing the project as more than just a stadium, but the 'future of Valencia CF'. Peter Lim's Meriton Holdings has committed over €200 million to the club, the most by a single investor in La Liga history, keeping Valencia financially stable and able to fund major projects like this. The stadium financing follows a corporate refinancing completed in November 2024, in which the club consolidated €186 million of debt, further strengthening its financial position.
