There's always been a certain poetic intensity to Raj Kapoor's cinema — but in 1978, he directed a film that stirred not just emotions but national headlines. That film was Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and while it became a box office blockbuster, it also earned notoriety for one unforgettable sequence. A legacy of cinema, a storm of controversy Casting his son Shashi Kapoor opposite the stunning Zeenat Aman, Raj Kapoor told a story that was visually rich — and unapologetically sensual. Zeenat played the character of Roopa, whose half-scarred face and full heart became the central emotional thread of the narrative. But the aesthetic boldness Kapoor brought to the screen had never been attempted at this level in Indian cinema. Costume clashes and cultural shock Zeenat's wardrobe in the film became the talk of the nation. Audiences weren't used to such skin-baring costumes, especially from mainstream actresses of the time. 'People lowered their gaze in theatres,' said critics who recalled the premiere. And yet, Zeenat carried the character with fierce confidence. The song that 'crossed all limits' The most debated moment came in the song 'Rang Mahal ke Das Darwaze…', filmed as a suhaag raat (wedding night) sequence. 'Raj Kapoor broke all boldness barriers in that scene,' said industry insiders. The visual styling — dimly lit but suggestive — created an uproar. 'She was almost shown nude,' many recalled. The scene, filled with intimate moments and suggestive visuals, remains etched in Bollywood folklore. Despite the backlash, the song — and the film — became instant favourites, both musically and theatrically. The pairing of Shashi Kapoor and Zeenat Aman was hailed as iconic. 'Zeenat simply lit up the screen,' wrote a 70s-era reviewer, 'and Shashi looked regal as the groom.' A blockbuster that still whispers Despite public outrage and moral debates, Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978) was a commercial hit. The film's soundtrack, story, and visuals still inspire conversations — proving once again that Raj Kapoor knew exactly how to blend art, beauty, and shock.

A scene from this drama, which is based on Prof MM Kalburgi's assassination Ballari: Samudaya Raichuru, an amateur theatre group, is enacting its popular play 'Raktha Vilap' in Ballari at Vaidya Bhavan, BMRC, Ballari on Sunday evening. The play has already created a buzz in Karnataka for its unique theme and story. Several amateur drama artistes are devoting their time and effort to make this play popular across the state for the past year. The first show was enacted on May 19, 2024, in Raichur. In the last year, twelve shows were conducted, and the 13th show will be held in Ballari on Sunday. The show has already received an overwhelming response from the audience and theatre lovers in Raichur, Bengaluru, Mysuru, Dharwad, Vijayapura, Sindhagi, and other parts of the state. Praveen Reddy, the director of the play, told TOI that the Raktha Vilap play is based on real incidents and serious issues concerning the society. It makes the audience give serious thought to issues ranging from freedom of expression to intellectual freedom in India after watching this play. This play is based on the life of scholar and thinker Dr MM Kalburgi, who was shot dead at point-blank range at his residence in Kalyan Nagar, Dharwad, on the morning of Aug 30, 2015. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? The play, which focuses on Prof Kalburgi's life, especially the assassination part, is conceptualised by Dr Vikram Visaji. "In the play, we have not used Prof Kalburgi's name for the character, though it is based on his life story. The characters in the play are not given any names but are known by the roles they play in the drama. For example, the person playing the advocate is referred to as the advocate in the play rather than using any names," Praveen said. As the play revolves around Prof Kalburgi's assassination, a person identified as Yuvak approaches the scholar character at his residence and gets into discussions and arguments with him over some ideological issues. Finally, the person (Yuvak) kills the scholar, he said. Praveen, who also essayed the role of the scholar representing Prof Kalburgi in the drama, said this play will throw light on how scholars face threats and lose their lives for speaking the truth. "It also aims to send a message that killing is not a solution. If there is any confusion or misunderstanding, it needs to be solved through dialogue rather than taking lives, he said. We are planning to enact this play in all universities to motivate students to take a good path rather than choosing the wrong path under the influence of fundamentalists," he said. "Prof Kalburgi's family members also watched the play and and lauded our efforts when it was enacted in Dharwad and Vijayapura," said Praveen.

Raza Murad says distributors who once begged for Raj Kapoor's films refused to buy Bobby without seeing it after Mera Naam Joker flop: 'He was in tremendous debt'

Raj Kapoor 's magnum opus Mera Naam Joker may have become a cult classic over time, but at the time of its release, the four-hour-long epic left the legendary actor-filmmaker in financial ruin. The film took six years to make and failed at the box office, putting Kapoor in a position where he was forced to rebuild the trust of an industry that had once revered him. In an interview with Filmy Charcha, veteran actor Raza Murad , who frequently collaborated with Kapoor, reflected on the aftermath of Mera Naam Joker's failure and how it impacted the making of Bobby . 'After Mera Naam Joker, he was in tremendous debt,' Murad said. 'Things got so bad that distributors refused to buy Bobby without seeing it first. These were the same people who were once desperate to secure the rights to his movies. But after Mera Naam Joker, everything changed.' Raj Kapoor wouldn't drink until his films got a censor certificate Despite being hailed early in his career and often compared to Orson Welles, Kapoor's subsequent films faced the burden of great expectations. Murad described him as a deeply passionate filmmaker who sacrificed everything, his time, his health, and even his family, for cinema. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo 'He loved his drinks and meat, but he would quit before getting a censor certificate,' Murad recalled. He was aware that his reputation was at stake. It wasn't about the money. He would put everything on the line.' When Raj Kapoor cheated on wife Krishna Raj Kapoor Raj Kapoor was a Shiva devotee and musical genius Raj Kapoor, who founded the iconic RK Studios and helped define post-Independence Indian cinema, was also deeply spiritual, Murad said. 'He was a devotee of Lord Shiva, and frequently referenced the Ganga in his films.' The actor also recalled Kapoor's exceptional musical instincts: 'He could play any musical instrument under the sun without practice.' Faced with skepticism from distributors during Bobby, Kapoor stood his ground. He reportedly refused to show them the full film but eventually agreed to show the songs to generate confidence. With Bobby, Raj Kapoor not only revived his fortunes but also launched his son Rishi Kapoor into stardom, proving once again why he was called 'The Showman' of Indian cinema.
