Mission Impossible theme composer, Lalo Schifrin, dies at 93

Yahooa day ago

The Grammy Award-winning composer of the Mission: Impossible theme, Lalo Schifrin, has died aged 93, his family announced.
The Argentine musician's son, Ryan Schifrin, confirmed his father died of complications from pneumonia on Thursday, in a statement shared with the BBC's US partner CBS.
Schifrin was known for his unique percussive and jazzy style during a career that spanned more than six decades, with over 100 film and TV soundtracks to his name.
He was nominated for six Oscars and won four Grammys, three of which were for his most celebrated theme for the Mission: Impossible TV series in 1966, which he later updated for the Tom Cruise blockbuster film franchise.
Schifrin's family said he "passed peacefully" surrounded by loved ones and thanked the public for their moving messages of support.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences paid tribute to the musician's "genius" compositions which "built tension, ignited adrenaline and gave stories their pulse".
"We'll forever remember the composer who turned every beat into a thrill, and every silence into suspense," it said in a post on X.
The prolific artist - a composer, pianist and conductor - was a consistent nominee at the Oscars with scores for films such as The Sting II, Cool Hand Luke, The Amityville Horror and Dirty Harry.
In 2018, Schifrin received an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar presented by Dirty Harry lead Clint Eastwood, who hailed his "unique musical style, his compositional integrity, and his influential contributions to the art of film scoring".
When accepting the honour, the Argentine musician said composing for film had given him "a lifetime of joy and creativity" and the award was "a culmination of a dream".
"It is a Mission: Accomplished," he said at the time.
Born into a musical family in Buenos Aires, Schifrin studied classical piano as a child before moving to Paris in his early 20s to play jazz - later sharing the stage with famous artists such as Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie.
After a move to America, he began writing for Hollywood with an eccentric blend of musical genres including jazz, classical, contemporary and pop.
His most unforgettable melody for Mission: Impossible was written in an unusual 5/4 time signature and, in his words, was intended to inject "a little humour, lightness" to form a theme "that didn't take itself too seriously".
The result became a global earworm to introduce one of the most successful film franchises, with the latest iteration Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning crossing $540m (£393m) worldwide.

Why Pixar's Elio Deserves More Than Its Box Office Debut

(Photo byfor Disney) After its release on June 20, 2025, Pixar's latest original film, Elio, opened to a modest amount at the box office. After the news broke, fans and critics alike have raised concerns about what this means for the future of Pixar, whose films have always been regarded as unique in their ability to connect with and tug at the heartstrings of their viewers. While these conversations continue off social media, it's essential to note that judging a film's profitability solely based on its opening weekend box office isn't always the most accurate formula. Scoring 84% at Rotten Tomatoes, and with Pixar being no stranger to its films experiencing a sort of slow burn at the box office, it wouldn't be outlandish to say that Elio could still be on the path to success. (Photo byfor Universal Pictures) Elio, while having the luxury of being a Pixar film in its corner, debuted alongside the long-awaited live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon and the post-apocalyptic horror film 28 Days Later, which was a sequel to an already successful horror film. Pixar, as a brand, has several franchises under its belt. Still, Elio, being an original concept and not a sequel like Toy Story or The Incredibles franchises, had to compete with two films that already have built-in fan bases. Franchises offer familiarity, as people want to see what happens to the characters and story they're already familiar with, which creates a sense of longing that will otherwise guarantee sales and influence their performance at the box office. How to Train Your Dragon also benefited from concentrated campaigns across multimedia platforms. With the original film debuting nearly 15 years ago, nostalgia played a huge role in its success. On the other hand, Elio, although it had its campaigns, adopted a more subdued approach, with some fans stating that they had never even seen a trailer for it until after it had already been FRANCE - MAY 26: Vincent Lacoste, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie attend ... More the Disney and Pixar's "Elemental" Photocall during The 76th Annual Cannes Film Festival at Carlton Beach on May 26, 2023 in Cannes, France. (Photo by) Looking back, we can see that the film that previously held Pixar's title for having the lowest opening weekend box office numbers might mean that Elio still has a chance to be a commercial success. Elemental, released in 2023, originally debuted with $29.6 million domestically. Similarly to Elio, people talked about what this meant for the future of Pixar until it went on to earn $496.4 million after it achieved success internationally. Considering that Pixar has been in this exact position before, and the fact that it happened with their last film, it wouldn't be farfetched to say that Elio might achieve the same trajectory, even if it doesn't achieve success at the international level. I don't need to delve into the economy and its impact on the average American citizen; we see, hear about, and experience it in our everyday lives. The truth of the matter is that, since the COVID-19 pandemic, many people, especially families, have opted to wait for films that will inevitably be released on streaming services like Disney+. Pixar films like Soul, Turning Red, and Luca all debuted on Disney+, which showed families that theaters and waiting for films to have physical releases were no longer the only options for watching movies they anticipated. With transportation costs, tickets for parents and children, and added concessions, families realize it's cheaper to stream a film on a service they're already paying for than to plan an entire outing to see a movie that could easily cost $70 or more. Even films like Disney's Encanto found much of it's success after it's virality from hit songs like 'We don't talk about Bruno' and 'Surface Pressure,' with the latter gaining traction because of streaming, proving that impact doesn't just exist in the theater. While I prefer original IPs, the average consumer is meticulous when deciding where to spend their hard-earned money. Today, every dollar needs to be accounted for, and some would choose the familiarity of franchises, something that they know they can trust, over something original that they can't guarantee will need to be prioritized. Still, despite Elio experiencing an underwhelming opening at the box office, we've seen Pixar come out on top time and time again. Expectations for movie theaters have changed over the last five years, and studio executives are aware of this. With a high score from critics for its original story, Elio might be playing the long game for success, but that wouldn't be anything Pixar isn't prepared for if films like Elemental serve as any indication. So often, critics expect films to be successful overnight. Still, in this current market, it might be safer to let films, especially those with original concepts and stories, grow into their success organically. We need to be patient.

Will Smith throws shade, references controversial Chris Rock Oscars slap in new freestyle

Despite having apologized and addressed the controversial 2022 Oscars moment, Smith's latest freestyle takes a less contrite tone. In 2022, the biggest story in entertainment was Will Smith slapping Chris Rock in retaliation for jokes that Rock got off at the expense of Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, as host of the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. Smith walked on stage, slapped Rock, and returned to his seat before telling him to keep his wife's name out of his mouth. Smith would later apologize to Rock and his family, and Rock would eventually speak about it as well, but nothing was ever the same for either man. At the time, Smith showed contrition for his act, but the Academy punished him with a 10-year ban from the Oscars. The Hollywood star was, though, allowed to stay at the ceremony that evening, eventually taking home the coveted 'Best Actor' award for his role as Venus and Serena Williams' father in the film 'King Richard.' In the years since, Rock has been mostly silent about it all (though his brother Tony Rock hasn't), addressing it in a Netflix special 'Selective Outrage,' and Smith has slowly but surely navigated his way back into mainstream appeal, including his enduring role as Mike Lowery in the blockbuster film, 'Bad Boys For Life,' part of the 'Bad Boys' franchise with Martin Lawrence. In March 2025, Smith even released a new album (his first in 20 years) titled 'Based on a True Story.' Smith just launched his first solo headline tour in support of the project, which mostly hits cities across Europe. While promoting the tour, he stopped by Charlie Sloth's show and dropped a freestyle in his 'Fire In The Booth' series. He had some…interesting things to say about the now, three-year-old incident. 'Now I'm not the type of man to move in malicious ways, and I am too grown to play childish games / If you talking crazy out your face up on the stage and disrespect me on the stage, expect me on the stage / Jokers dish it out, cry out when it's time to take it, City full of real ones wasn't raised to fake it.' Smith never says Rock's name over the course of his 'freestyle'– which should be a song called 'The Illest'– but the not-so-subliminal shots aimed at Chris Rock are noticeable. Even if they aren't directed toward Rock, they surely sound like they are, and in hip-hop (and ego), that's all that matters. Especially considering that Smith has, again, shown contrition publicly. Maybe things have changed in the world of Will Smith, and those early apologies have given way to new information and/or feelings about what's happened. Maybe he's just letting the world know that kind of kid comes from West Philadelphia, where he was born and raised. Or maybe he's just drumming up publicity. Who knows? What we do know is that this latest freestyle at the very least fanned whatever remaining flames were simmering of an incident that changed the trajectory of two of America's most famous men. Brenda Song says Disney blocked her from pursuing 'Gran Torino' role because of sexual assault scene: 'I was very upset'

Brenda Song's transition from Disney child star to Hollywood actress wasn't always so suite. The actress, 37, rose to prominence for her role as hotel heiress London Tipton on Disney Channel sitcom The Suite Life of Zack & Cody in the early 2000s, starring in a number of original films on the network (Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior, Stuck in the Suburbs) before transitioning to more mature roles in such titles as David Fincher's The Social Network. While accepting Variety's Virtuoso Award at the Bentonville Film Festival in Arkansas, Song shared that her career path was not without obstacles due to her Disney background, revealing that she had been considered for a role in Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino — but Disney ultimately would not allow it due to a sexual assault scene. "The character had an intended sexual assault scene, so Disney nixed it,' Song said. 'And I was very upset but I was like, 'Okay, I guess it didn't work out.'' The 2008 thriller starred Eastwood as a disgruntled and prejudiced Korean War vet who forms an unlikely friendship with a Hmong teen (Bee Vang) after the latter reluctantly attempts to steal his treasured car. Disney actually had similar concerns about her role as Christy, a love interest of Andrew Garfield's Eduardo who has a sexually explicit scene in the film, in The Social Network, Song shared. But she pushed back, going directly to Gary Marsh, president and COO of Disney Branded Television, at the time. 'I was just like, 'I am an actor. When you hired me, I was not a hotel heiress. If I have ever done anything in my personal life to ever draw bad attention to your company, I understand. But this is the last season of the show, and this is the opportunity of a lifetime,'" Song shared. "And I was so fortunate, they were so supportive. They allowed me to do this film that truly changed my life.' Following her departure from Disney, Song appeared across episodes of Scandal, New Girl, Station 19, and Dollface. She also starred in movies like Changeland, where she met future husband Macaulay Culkin, and Secret Obsession. It was her recent turn in Gia Coppola's 2024 drama The Last Showgirl, starring opposite Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis, that ushered in what many have hailed as the Brendaissance. Song told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year that the role — as a fiery showgirl named Mary-Anne — marked a "beautiful turning point' in her career. 'I had literally just said to my mom and my partner, 'If the best of my career's behind me, I think I'm okay with that. I am really proud of what I've done,'' she recalled. 'And they're like, 'What are you talking about? You're 35 years old.' But I was at such a crossroads in my life.' Most recently, she appeared on Mindy Kaling's sports comedy series Running Point, which was renewed for a second season. As with The Last Showgirl, that experience "re-energized me and reminded me why I love doing what I do so much," Song said. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly
