£46m Chelsea flop set for transfer move with club to take huge financial blow

Metro2 days ago
Joao Felix is on the verge of joining Benfica from Chelsea in a deal worth just €25m (£21.7m), according to reports in Portugal.
The Blues are set for a significant financial blow over the 25-year-old, given they paid £46m to sign him on a permanent deal less than 12 months ago.
Felix, previously dubbed an 'impostor' by football pundit Roy Keane, has struggled since joining Chelsea on a seven-year deal in August 2024.
The Portugal international was sent out on loan to AC Milan for the second half of the 2024-25 campaign, where Italian press branded him a 'disaster'.
Felix has played 40 games for Chelsea – including his loan spell before they bought him from Atletico Madrid – producing 11 goals and two assists.

According to Portuguese outlet Record, Felix is now 'very close' to making a return to Benfica, the club where he started his senior career.
The deal is expected to be finalised by tomorrow (Friday, July 25) with the player keen on a second stint with Benfica.
It's believed that Felix could potentially play in Benfica's pre-season friendly clash against Fenerbahçe on Saturday.
Felix was once viewed as one of the most exciting talents in the world – with Atletico paying an astronomical fee of £113m to sign him in 2019.
But the versatile attacker – who can be deployed as a second striker, centre-forward or winger – has very much failed to live up the hype.
'He has still not found his place,' former Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly told Milan Presse earlier this year.
'He's been at Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, now Milan, without making any real impact.
'At this moment of his career, he needs a club with a clear philosophy that can build [a] project around him, put him at ease to express his potential that we still haven't really seen. More Trending
'What Joao Felix lacks is not technique, but character. He is not a leader.'
According to Record, Benfica president Rui Costa has already reserved the No.10 shirt for Felix.
The No.10 shirt is considered to be special at Benfica, with Costa donning it himself during his time as a player for the club.
It was also worn by the late Eusebio, regarded as one of football's greatest ever players.

Newcastle United plot move for £50m Chelsea striker to replace Alexander Isak

Newcastle United are interested in a deal to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson as a replacement for Alexander Isak, according to reports. Eddie Howe's side have ramped up plans to sign a new forward after Isak told the club he wanted to leave St James' Park in the summer window. Isak has been strongly linked with a move to Premier League champions Liverpool, who are believed to be plotting a massive offer for the Swede. Newcastle are considering a number of players to replace Isak and have now added Jackson to their list of potential options, the Daily Mail report. Jackson, who scored 10 Premier League goals in 30 games last term, has also attracted interest from Manchester United ahead of the new season. The 24-year-old Senegal international has been at Stamford Bridge since June 2023, with the Blues paying a £32m fee to sign him from Villarreal. It's believed that Chelsea want around £50m in order to let Jackson leave the west London club, with the player under contract until 2033. Jackson has played a total of 81 games for Chelsea to date across all competitions, producing 30 goals and 12 assists. It was reported in June that Italian side Juventus had made contact with Jackson's representatives and were considering a bid for the player. Arsenal have also been linked to Chelsea striker Jackson this summer – and the same is true for AC Milan – as well as Aston Villa. Chelsea have brought in two new strikers this summer with Liam Delap arriving from Ipswich and Joao Pedro coming in from Brighton. That has called into question their plans for Jackson, who now faces a lot of competition up front and may well have fallen down the pecking order. It should be noted, though, that Jackson is not the only striker Newcastle are looking at as a potential replacement for wantaway star Isak. More Trending Ollie Watkins is thought to be a possible option for Newcastle, although it remains to be seen if Aston Villa would allow him to join a top-flight rival. Newcastle are also weighing up a move for Brentford forward Yoane Wissa, who scored 19 Premier League goals in 35 games last season. Arsenal finally complete Viktor Gyokeres transfer as long striker search ends

Gyokeres had been tipped to leave Sporting Lisbon this summer after two hugely prolific seasons in Portugal and failed to report for pre-season training in an effort to force a move away from the Portuguese champions. Arsenal made Gyokeres their top target after pivoting from Benjamin Sesko when the RB Leipzig striker's wage demands became an issue. The Gunners have since been in discussions with Sporting - the move was initially held up because of negotiations regarding add-on payments - but an agreement has now been reached. Gyokeres will return to England, where he previously played for Brighton and Hove Albion, Swansea City and Coventry City. It was his performances with the Sky Blues that saw Sporting, then led by Ruben Amorim, sign the striker. Gyokeres's competitive debut for Arsenal is likely to come against Manchester United at the start of the Premier League season on August 17 - which will see him come up against his former manager. Arsenal knew that their priority this summer was on adding an out and out striker with Mikel Arteta having to find makeshift solutions. That has seen Kai Havertz often lead the line over the past 18 months when fit, whilst Gabriel Jesus has struggled for fitness and consistency. Gyokeres takes Arsenal's spending to around the £200m mark with the Swede joining the likes of Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke in bolstering the club's squad ahead of another attempt at ending their wait for a Premier League title. Speaking on Friday, Arteta said he "cannot talk about a player who is not ours yet", but hinted that any new signing would join the tour as soon as possible. He said: "For sure. Obviously once we have finalised everything with a player we want to integrate him with the team as quickly as possible. With Noni [Madueke] it was impossible because he needed some time [after playing in the Club World Cup]. I think he's going to take a shorter vacation than he deserves because he wants to join us straight away, as soon as we're back. "I think immediately is better, so they can start to join the team, get to know each other and get the ideas we want to put in their minds."

Arsenal complete signing of striker Viktor Gyokeres for £55m

The 27-year-old Sweden international, who fired Sporting to the title last season with 39 goals and netted a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City, is understood to have signed a five-year deal at the Emirates. Gyokeres' transfer, which could end up costing the north London club as much as £64m with performance-related add-ons, takes Arsenal's close-season spending to the region of £200m. This is where you need to be. Viktor Gyökeres is a Gunner ✊ — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 26, 2025 He becomes Mikel Arteta's sixth summer signing and follows defender Cristhian Mosquera (£13m), midfielder Martin Zubimendi (£60m), goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga (£5m), midfielder Christian Norgaard (£10m) and forward Noni Madueke (£48.5m) in moving to the Emirates. A statement from Arsenal read: 'We are delighted to announce that Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres has signed for us on a long-term contract.' Gyokeres will be expected to meet up with his new team-mates in Arsenal's ongoing pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong. The Gunners face Newcastle in the Singapore National Stadium on Sunday ahead of the concluding game of their tour, against Tottenham in Hong Kong on July 31. A post shared by Viktor Gyökeres (@viktorgyokeres) 'We're excited about what Viktor brings to our squad and are looking forward to start working with him.' Gyokeres moved to Brighton from Swedish side Brommapojkarna in January 2018, but spent time on loan at St Pauli and then Swansea and Coventry, before making a permanent move to the Sky Blues in July 2021. After Coventry were beaten on penalties by Luton in the 2023 Sky Bet Championship final at Wembley, Gyokeres completed a £20.5m switch to Sporting. He scored a remarkable 97 goals in 102 matches for the Portuguese side. Arsenal spent the concluding months of last season without a recognised striker following long-term injuries to Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz. Even before then, Arsenal were in desperate need of a reliable scorer, and Arteta will hope his new signing can fire him to his first silverware since he won the FA Cup in 2020, and end the club's two-decade wait for a Premier League title. Arsenal's new sporting director, Andrea Berta has wasted little time in strengthening a squad which has finished runners-up in the league for the past three seasons. Gabriel and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also put pen to paper on new contracts in the off-season, with a long-term extension for teenager Ethan Nwaneri believed to be all-but completed. Berta said: 'We are confident Viktor will have a major impact on the pitch and become an important figure in our dressing room.'
