How social media can make or break your college admission chances

India Today7 days ago

Today, when social media is simultaneously a digital diary and a networking tool, students tend to downplay the strength of their online footprints. College admissions committees, especially at top US, UK, and now increasingly Indian, institutions, have started including social media assessments as part of their holistic review process. Though admissions committees mainly review academic records, extracurricular accomplishments, and personal essays, a student's online presence can support their application or be a cause for concern.advertisementManali Dogra, Associate Partner 2 at Athena Education, highlights how college admissions today extend beyond grades and essays. A student's social media presence is now a powerful, often overlooked, part of the selection process.WHAT ADMISSION OFFICERS WANTAdmissions officers are most interested in ensuring that a student's application is consistent with their online presence. They tend to look for:Exhibitions of leadership, enthusiasm, and initiative - A thoughtfully constructed LinkedIn or blog featuring research, projects, or volunteer activities can reinforce an application.Community participation - Students that stand up for a cause, engage in quality discussions, or share valuable content that pertains to their line of interest have a positive influence.Professionalism and maturity - Messages that project responsibility, thoughtful reflection, and intellectual curiosity catch the attention of the evaluators.Red flags - Inappropriate language, offensive memes, cyberbullying, or questionable affiliations can be a cause for concern and even risk an admission offer.HOW TO CURATE A POSITIVE DIGITAL FOOTPRINTadvertisement1. Audit your existing profilesConduct a Google search of your name to see what appears. Review all social media accounts-Instagram, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Facebook, TikTok, and even Reddit-and delete or archive any posts that could be misconstrued. Remove any posts that contain profanity, discriminatory remarks, or content that may reflect poorly on your character.2. Align your online presence with your applicationYour social media must supplement your academic and extracurricular record. If you've included a research project in your college application, share your findings or experience on LinkedIn. If you're interested in environmental sustainability, use your Instagram or Twitter (X) to promote climate action or highlight associated initiatives you've taken.3. Set privacy controls wiselyWhile it's not necessary to make every account public, ensure that even private accounts reflect your best self. Admissions officers might not access private content, but mutual connections or tagged photos can still reveal aspects of your personality. Avoid sharing posts that may be misinterpreted or taken out of context.4. Leverage linkedIn and personal websitesLinkedIn is a great way for students to highlight achievements, extracurricular activities, and professional ambitions. Developing an easy personal site or portfolio of research work, blog entries, or creative activities can build an engaging online presence that admissions representatives value.advertisement5. Steer clear of controversial or misleading contentColleges prize students who are able to engage in tolerant views. Avoid inflammatory political diatribes, insensitive humor, or statements that can alienate particular communities. Rather, be concerned with productive conversation and critical thinking. As digital trails have become a defining aspect of contemporary identity, it is important for students to engage their online existence as an extension of their own personal brand-a brand that exhibits authenticity, responsibility, and dedication to growth.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Why Your Mixer Jar Still Smells Even After Washing and How To Stop It

In every Indian kitchen, there is one appliance that pulls more than its weight - the mixer-grinder. Whether you are whipping up fresh coconut chutney, blitzing ginger-garlic paste, grinding dry masalas, or prepping dosa batter, this multitasker is always on duty. But there is one issue many of us quietly tolerate: the jar starts to smell odd. Sometimes it is musty, sometimes sour - and unfortunately, the smell tends to linger. Even if you clean your jars regularly, the smell often persists. The real culprit? Improper drying. This small misstep could be allowing bacteria, mould, and even rust to creep into your daily meals. Let us break it down. Also Read: 6 Essential Tips for Finding Your Perfect Mixer-Grinder Why Your Mixer Grinder Jar Smells Musty - And How Moisture Is Causing It It is easy to point fingers at garlic, ginger, or masala residues. But the real issue is moisture. When you use the jar for wet grinding, water sneaks into the blade assembly, hides in the lid grooves, and clings to the rubber ring. If this moisture is not properly cleared out, it creates the perfect environment for bacteria and mould to thrive. Even worse, it can lead to rusting of the blades, which not only affects the smell but can also change the taste of whatever you grind next. Also Read: Kitchen Tips: How To Clean A Mixer Grinder Photo Credit: Pexels Wiping Your Mixer Jar Is Not Enough - Here Is Why It Still Smells A quick rinse and wipe might seem like a reasonable cleaning routine. But here is why it is not enough: Towels, especially reused or damp ones, may carry bacteria if not cleaned frequently The blade assembly and lid grooves are hard to reach with just a cloth Moisture often remains in hidden corners, even if the jar looks dry. That leftover dampness is what causes trouble later. How To Stop Your Mixer Jar From Smelling - Easy Drying Tip That Works Want a quick, low-effort fix? Let your jar breathe. Always allow the mixer jar and its lid to air-dry completely before storing. This one habit can help you avoid: Lingering odours Sticky or greasy build-up Mould or mildew formation Early rusting of blades Drying thoroughly is one of the simplest kitchen hygiene tips that can make a huge difference. 3 Easy Ways To Dry Mixer Grinder Jars Completely And Prevent Odour If you are in a hurry or want a more effective routine, try one of these drying methods to eliminate odour and moisture: 1. Sun-Dry Method: Keep the jar and lid open under direct sunlight for 10-15 minutes. Sunlight not only dries thoroughly but also has natural antibacterial properties. 2. Tissue-And-Fan Hack: Place the jar upside down on a clean tissue or dry kitchen towel under a fan. The airflow helps speed up drying, while the tissue absorbs moisture near the blades. 3. Spin-Dry Trick: Once washed, fix the lid and run the mixer (empty) for five seconds. The rapid spin flings out hidden water droplets. Follow it with a tissue wipe, and always store the jar with the lid loosely open. DU to hold special exams for students affected by Operation Sindoor; forms open till July 10

The University of Delhi (DU) has announced a special opportunity for students who missed their semester examinations in May "due to the situation during Operation Sindoor". In an official statement, Professor Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, Controller of Examinations, said that the university has made provisions for affected undergraduate and postgraduate students of the 2024–25 academic year to reappear for their missed papers on May 13, 14, and 15. The notification provides the Google Form link for students to register: Highlighting eligibility, the university clarified that the form is only for students who could not appear on the examination dates. It is mandatory to produce the documentary evidence showing that they could not reach Delhi. "All concerned students of undergraduate and postgraduate for academic year 2024-25 are hereby informed that the last date of submission of the Google form on the following link for the Examination is 10.07.2025 (Thursday) till 11.59 pm," the university said in a notification on Tuesday. The controller of examinations emphasised that the provision ensures students are not academically penalised for events beyond their control, while maintaining the integrity of the process by requiring valid documentation. The University's move is expected to benefit dozens of students whose academic progress was disrupted due to the situation during Operation Sindoor. The exams will be rescheduled only for verified applicants and the dates for these will be communicated later by the examination branch. The move is seen as a relief for many students whose academic schedules were impacted by the situation.

Simulation of crashed Air India jet puts focus on technical flaw

More than two weeks after the deadly crash of an Air India plane that killed all but one of the 242 people on board, investigators and the airline are studying possible dual engine failure as a scenario that prevented the Boeing Co. 787 jet from staying airborne. ADVERTISEMENT Pilots from the airline reenacted the doomed aircraft's parameters in a flight simulator, including with the landing gear deployed and the wing flaps retracted, and found those settings alone didn't cause a crash, according to people familiar with the investigation. The result, alongside the previous discovery that an emergency-power turbine deployed seconds before impact, has reinforced the focus on a technical failure as one possible cause, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing non-public deliberations. The simulated flight was conducted separately from the official probe being led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, or AAIB, and was done to explore possible scenarios, one of the people Boeing 787 that crashed in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad on June 12 was powered by two engines made by General Electric Co. Video footage of the aircraft showed the plane struggling to gain altitude after taking off, and then sinking back to the ground, where it exploded. Additional Clues Boeing declined to comment and deferred any questions to AAIB, while GE said it cannot comment on an active investigation. The AAIB and Air India did not respond to a request for comment. ADVERTISEMENT Whether or why both engines would have simultaneously lost power remains unknown, but investigators will seek additional clues from the two flight recorders, whose data has been extracted and is undergoing analysis. The investigation is exploring a wide range of scenarios, though a closer focus is on technical issues, the people who reviewed the footage have pointed to the fact that the landing gear was already partially tilted forward, suggesting the cockpit crew had initiated the retraction sequence of the wheels. ADVERTISEMENT At the same time, the landing-gear doors had not opened, which pilots say might mean that the aircraft experienced a loss of power or a hydraulic failure — again pointing to possible issues with the engines that provide the aircraft's engines of modern aircraft are computer controlled using a system called Full Authority Digital Engine Control, or FADEC, which helps pilots control an aircraft's power and makes sure the engines are used efficiently and not outside their operating limits. ADVERTISEMENT An emergency turbine called the RAT, which deploys from the back of the aircraft in the case of electrical failure, was activated before the plane crashed, according to previous findings. That fan helps provide the aircraft with vital power, though it's far too small to generate any lift. 15 Seconds Analysis of the wreckage suggests the wing flaps and slats, which help an aircraft increase lift during takeoff, were extended correctly. The crash ranks as the worst accident in Indian civil aviation in several decades, and it's the first time that a Boeing 787 Dreamliner has been lost to an accident. ADVERTISEMENT The pilots, who died in the crash, sent out a Mayday signal shortly after takeoff. There were only about 15 seconds between the distress call and impact, two people familiar with the investigation from Boeing and the US National Transportation Safety Board are supporting the investigation on the ground. It's unknown when authorities will give an update from readout of the flight recorders, which typically provide a comprehensive analysis of an aircraft's settings and performance metrics as well as conversations in the cockpit.
