Alberta drilling company fined $126K following serious workplace injury
An Edmonton-based drilling company has been sentenced after a worker was seriously injured on the job.
TAQA Drilling Solutions Inc. is being fined $126,000 as a result of an incident that happened three years ago.
On March 23, 2022, a worker was taking apart oilfield drilling equipment in Edmonton when they were struck by a projectile, according to a Friday government news release. The worker was seriously injured.
TAQA pleaded guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Code (OHS) for failing to provide safeguards if a worker could come into contact with objects thrown by machinery or equipment.
The Crown withdrew eight other charges.
Under a 'creative sentence,' the company has been ordered to pay $126,000 to the Glenrose Hospital Foundation for neuromodulation research at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital.
The OHS Act provides a creative sentence option in which fines can be paid directly to an organization or project to improve or promote workplace health and safety.

Victim injured during buy-and-sell meetup in downtown Kitchener

The victim, who was trying to sell unspecified property, arranged to meet a potential buyer at Joseph Street and Gaukel Street, near Victoria Park, on Wednesday afternoon. Police said a group of males were waiting at that location. When the buyer showed them the item, police said 'the suspects took it from the victim and hit and assaulted them with an unknown object.' The buyer had only minor, non-life-threatening injuries. One of the suspects was described as a Black man, 40 to 50 years old, and approximately 6'0' with black dreadlocks. The incident was reported to police approximately five hours later. Anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to contact WRPS at 519-570-9777. Tips for buyers and sellers Waterloo Regional Police say safety should be the priority when buying or selling something to a stranger. As such, they have set up three designated Buy and Sell Exchange Zones in the parking lots of their detachments. Catholic school board ‘working diligently' to clean up playground fire debris
After a northwest Edmonton playground was set ablaze last weekend, Edmonton Catholic Schools says it is 'working diligently' to expedite cleanup efforts before the school year begins. 'We know how much this playground means to the students, families and the surrounding community,' said a statement from the school board's chief superintendent Lynette Anderson Friday afternoon. 'We're working hard behind the scenes to move things forward quickly and are looking ahead to rebuilding a new space for children to play, grow and connect.' Edmonton police responded to the blaze at St. Pius X Catholic Elementary School in the Sherbrooke neighbourhood around 8 a.m. on July 12. While the playground was destroyed, officers said it was fortunate the school didn't catch on fire. Police are still investigating the matter and are searching for an arsonist responsible for setting the playground on fire. The playground cost more than $600,000 and it took more than a decade to raise funds. The Sherbrooke Community League launched a fundraiser to replace the playground, already raising $10,000. Final estimates on damage have yet to be determined. Edmonton Catholic Schools says it is working with their insurance provided to assess the damage and begin next steps. EDMONTON — A serial romance fraudster who faked brain cancer and used other schemes to bilk Alberta women out of thousands of dollars is fighting a court ruling to keep him in prison indefinitely.
