CM Stalin to launch 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' today
The programme, aimed at early detection and treatment of non-communicable diseases, will be rolled out across Tamil Nadu through 1,256 speciality health camps.
The initiative targets people over 40 years of age, particularly those with diabetes, hypertension, heart ailments, mental health conditions, as well as pregnant women, nursing mothers, persons with disabilities, and marginalised and tribal communities.
Each camp will provide free consultations by specialists from 15 medical departments, including cardiology, neurology, ophthalmology, ENT, dermatology, and AYUSH systems.
On-site diagnostic services such as ECG, ECHO, ultrasound, X-rays, and blood tests will also be offered.
Test results will be shared with patients via WhatsApp, and the camps will be conducted on all working Saturdays in schools or colleges, said Additional Chief Secretary J. Radhakrishnan.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government on Friday filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking modification of an interim order that restrained the state from launching welfare schemes in the name of living political personalities.
The state urged the court to clarify that the order should not apply to the 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' scheme, as it is being launched in the name of the Chief Minister, a constitutional authority, and not a political figure in the conventional sense.
The first bench, headed by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava, had orally observed that the launch could proceed following a mention by Advocate General P.S. Raman.
However, the government opted to file a formal plea, which is expected to be heard on Monday.
In its submission, the state noted that extensive preparations had been made for the scheme, including the printing and distribution of pamphlets, brochures, and application forms.
It also stated that 800 hospitals had been linked to the programme to manage patient footfall.
"If the court's order is enforced immediately, the entire scheme will have to be put on hold, resulting in weeks of delay and waste of resources," the plea stated.
The case stems from a petition filed by former AIADMK law minister C. Ve. Shanmugam, who alleged that the scheme violates guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court and the Election Commission.

Hyderabad District Collector Hari Chandana Dasari has directed Health department officials to carry out inspections of hospitals where AYUSH practitioners are allegedly offering allopathic treatment without proper qualifications. She instructed that such practices be thoroughly investigated and legal action initiated wherever necessary. Speaking at the District-Level Registering Authority Committee meeting on Tuesday, the Collector said that a special drive is underway to crackdown on unregistered clinics operating during the night without permission. 'Such violations compromise patient safety and must be dealt with firmly,' she said. The Collector also stressed that all permissions for running medical establishments must strictly adhere to the provisions of the Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, and its amended rules from 2022. She instructed that applications for new registrations or renewals be granted only after thorough verification of documents and credentials. The Collector further asked police officials to verify inspection checklists and focus on the medical staff's qualifications and any existing complaints or criminal cases linked to hospitals or practitioners.

The number of patients from the neighbouring country has slid to just 10% of what it was a year ago, though some private hospitals have seen a marginal rise in numbers since April. With visas still being issued slowly, the situation is not likely to improve soon, they felt. Some are actively exploring opportunities to expand reach beyond Bangladesh to fill up the void. Desun Hospital has been witnessing a steady rise in footfall of Bangladeshi patients since April 2025, with OPD figures achieving nearly 90% of footfall it saw before trouble started in Bangladesh last year. Ruby General Hospital, which received around 800 patients a month from Bangladesh a year ago, now gets around 400. "It has improved in last two months but is still half of what we would get," said general manager (operations) Subhasish Datta.

India to host three-day WHO-IRCH workshop from Aug 6India will host the WHO-International Regulatory Cooperation for Herbal Medicines (IRCH) workshop from August 6 at Hotel Fortune District Centre in Ghaziabad. The three-day workshop is being organised by the Ministry of Ayush in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homoeopathy (PCIM&H), the Ayush ministry said in a statement. The international workshop will bring together global experts and regulators to strengthen capacity in the regulation of herbal medicines, the statement said. The event will be inaugurated by Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush, and Dr. Kim Sungchol, Chairperson, WHO-IRCH. Physical participation from countries including Bhutan, Brunei, Cuba, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Nepal, Paraguay, Poland, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Zimbabwe is expected, while Brazil, Egypt, and the USA will join virtually. The workshop will serve as a platform for international cooperation and technical exchange, addressing five key objectives: fostering collaboration, enhancing safety and efficacy mechanisms, supporting regulatory convergence, and empowering traditional medicine systems globally, the statement said. Among the highlights are reviews of WHO-IRCH Working Groups 1 and 3 focusing on safety, regulation, efficacy, and intended use of herbal medicines'alongside sessions on pre-clinical research, regulatory frameworks, and safety case studies, including a focused discussion on Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). Participants will benefit from hands-on training in herbal drug identification, heavy metal analysis, and chemo-profiling using HPTLC technology at PCIM&H laboratories. The workshop will also introduce the Ayush Suraksha (Pharmacovigilance) Programme, aimed at strengthening safety monitoring of traditional medicines, the statement said. To provide deeper exposure to India's integrative health ecosystem, the delegates will undertake visits to PCIM&H, the National Institute of Unani Medicine (NIUM), Ghaziabad, and the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi. With participation from regulatory authorities and experts across continents, the workshop is expected to contribute significantly towards harmonizing global standards and promoting the safe, effective integration of traditional medicine into mainstream public health, the statement said.
