The two Brazil Serie A sides go head-to-head with Palmeiras the bookies favourites to secure a spot in the Club World Cup quarter-final despite Botafogo's head-to-head record
It is an all-Brazilian affair in the Club World Cup round of 16 opening clash as Palmeiras and Botafogo go head-to-head once again this season.
This Saturday evening, the football world will turn its eyes towards the Club World Cup, where Brazilian powerhouses Palmeiras and Botafogo are set to lock horns in a thrilling encounter.
These two titans of Brazilian football have been testing each other's mettle in recent seasons, battling fiercely for the crown of the Brazilian premier league in two out of the past three years.
Now, both teams have their sights set on the illustrious Club World Cup trophy, having put on impressive displays during the group stage of this prestigious tournament.
Palmeiras showed their class by topping Group A, remaining undefeated in their first three matches and demonstrating their potential to go all the way.
On the other hand, Botafogo secured a respectable second place in Group B, coming in behind Paris Saint-Germain. However, it's important to highlight that Renato Paiva's squad managed to spring one of the tournament's biggest shocks so far, clinching a 1-0 victory over the recently crowned champions of Europe on the second day of matches.
Surprisingly, the bookies have Palmeiras as the favourites despite the fact the side have only secured one win in the last seven meetings with Botafogo.

Thunderstorm forces players off in Chelsea's CWC last-16 clash with Benfica
Enzo Maresca's side were leading 1-0 and just four minutes away from securing their place in the last eight when the referee took players off the field at the Bank of America Stadium. The match has been suspended due to extreme weather. ⏸️ 🔴 0-1 🔵 [85] — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) June 28, 2025 Captain Reece James had broken the deadlock with a superb free-kick in 64th minute, rewarding Chelsea for a dominant display. Yet as the final whistle neared, the sky darkened and a game which had largely been played in sweltering 32C heat was halted. It is the latest of a number of matches in the tournament to have been paused because of a thunderstorm. Cristiano Ronaldo saw a bigger picture when he rejected Club World Cup offers
Following Al Nassr's final league game of the season last month, Ronaldo had posted on social media 'the chapter is over', which fuelled speculation the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was to leave the Saudi Pro League club. The 40-year-old revealed teams had 'reached out' over taking part in the Club World Cup in the United States, but he decided instead to extend his stay with Al Nassr, where his old contract was set to expire at the end of June. Cristiano Ronaldo speaks about AlNassr, Saudi Arabia, his life and ambitions. Watch the Full Exclusive Interview — AlNassr FC (@AlNassrFC_EN) June 28, 2025 'I had some offers to play (Club) World Cup, but I think it didn't make sense because I prefer to have a good rest, a good preparation, because this season will be very long, because this is the season of the World Cup at the end,' Ronaldo told Al Nassr TV. 'I want to be ready not only for Al Nassr, but also for the national team, so this is why I decide to play the last game for the Nations League and not listen to nothing (about the offers) and of course to be in this club, which I love.' Al Nassr finished third in the Saudi Pro League last season after being knocked out of the Kings Cup and AFC Champions League, which saw the club part company with Italian manager Stefano Pioli. A new chapter begins. Same passion, same dream. Let's make history together. 🟡🔵 — Cristiano Ronaldo (@Cristiano) June 26, 2025 Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus is reportedly to set to take over, and Al Nassr captain Ronaldo – who was leading scorer with 35 goals last season – feels the club can go on to challenge for top honours. 'I want to stay because I believe in the project, not (just) the next two years, but until 2034 which is the goal and will be the World Cup in Saudi Arabia, which I believe will be the most beautiful one ever,' said Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in December 2022 as a free agent after leaving Manchester United. 'So I am happy – two years more, I want to fight with the best teams in Saudi to win the league. I believe and let's see in the end of the day who is better. 'We know that what we did last season is not enough, but it is already past. We have to focus now in the present and the present is good.'
