Illinois landlord who killed 6-year-old Palestinian-American, injured his mother in hate crime stabbing dies in prison
A landlord jailed for decades after he attacked a Palestinian American boy and his mother has died. Three months ago, Joseph Czuba was sentenced to 53 years behind bars for the attack. He was found guilty in February of murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges in the death of Wadee Alfayoumi and the wounding of the boy's mother, Hanan Shaheen. The 73-year-old Czuba targeted them in October 2023 because of their Islamic faith and as a response to the war between Israel and Hamas, which started days earlier. 6 Joseph Czuba, who was convicted of murdering a Palestinian American boy and injuring his mother, has passed way at the age of 73. Ahmed Rehab, the executive director of Council on American-Islamic Relations' Chicago office, said in a statement on Saturday that 'this depraved killer has died, but the hate is still alive and well.' Evidence at trial included harrowing testimony from Shaheen and her frantic 911 call, along with bloody crime scene photos and police video. Jurors deliberated less than 90 minutes before handing in a verdict. 6 Czuba was sentenced to 53 years in prison for murder, attempted murder and hate-crime charges. Family Handout The family had been renting rooms in Czuba's home in Plainfield, about 40 miles from Chicago when the attack happened. Central to prosecutors' case was harrowing testimony from the boy's mother, who said Czuba attacked her before moving on to her son, insisting they had to leave because they were Muslim. Prosecutors also played the 911 call and showed police footage. Czuba's wife, Mary, whom he has since divorced, also testified for the prosecution, saying he had become agitated about the Israel-Hamas war, which had erupted days earlier. 6 Wadee's father Odai Alfayoumi leaving Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., following Czuba's sentencing on May 2, 2025. Some of the bloody crime scene photos were so explicit that the judge agreed to turn television screens showing them away from the audience, which included Wadee's relatives. The attack renewed fears of anti-Muslim discrimination and hit particularly hard in Plainfield and surrounding suburbs, which have a large and established Palestinian community. Wadee's funeral drew large crowds, and Plainfield officials have dedicated a park playground in his honor.

LeBron James Takes Legal Action Against Deepfakes Of Him Being Pregnant
Source: MediaNews Group/Pasadena Star-News via Getty Images / Getty Fighting misinformation has been an ongoing battle for years and has begun to hilariously overtake the NBA players, thanks to NBA Centel. But now with the random advancements of AI, you can do more than tweet out a made-up statement about an athlete, you can dream up a video about it— and that's where LeBron James draws the line. Legally, at least. According to 404 Media , James' team of lawyers has sent out cease-and-desist letters to Flick Up, the company behind an AI tool and Discord community that allowed people to create random AI-generated videos of NBA stars. Of course, given too much freedom, some NBA fans took it too far with deepfake content that featured James and even Steph Curry in unusual predicaments involving Diddy. 'These included videos where an AI-generated James stood by as an AI-generated Diddy sexually assaulted Steph Curry in prison, videos of James imagined as a homeless person, videos of James on his knees with his tongue out, and videos of James pregnant,' writes 404 Media . Then a change came to the platform in June when the Discord community's moderators stopped using realistic people as models because they wanted to avoid any further complications with a 'highly valued basketball player.' Now, weeks later, Flick Up Founder Jason Stacks confirmed with 404 Media that the player was indeed LeBron James, and on his behalf, law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks sent him a request to quit it. 'The letter came from Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks on behalf of LeBron James, and we took it seriously,' Stacks said. 'We removed the models immediately and have since updated our approach to likeness and public figure policies. That's really the full story on our end.' In a video posted to Instagram, Stacks revealed the moment he received the letter, admitting he was 'so f-cked.' He continued, explaining that he didn't know the video would become so popular and that posting it on YouTube led to it gaining more attention than he ever imagined. 'Two months ago, I launched the YouTube of AI video. It was a fun idea to help creators make some more money,' he said in the video. 'But then people started noticing. Like, really noticing. Like this guy, yeah, the LeBron James. And he wasn't happy, because I got this cease and desist from his team.' Well, apparently, James isn't with the jokes, at least one of him being pregnant. Debit cards given to NYC's summer youth job program tied to $17 M ATM fraud scam: sources
NYC-issued debit cards meant to pay participants working in a summer youth program were instead used by scammers who nabbed $17 million over a three-day period earlier this month, sources told The Post. The scam — the subject of an ongoing fraud probe — led to ATMs across the Big Apple being banged for big bucks from July 11 to July 13, with the cash ending up in the wrong hands rather than kids and young adults in the Summer Youth Employment Program, officials said. The payment cards are supposed to give access to weekly earnings, typically several hundred bucks at most. However, an error allowed the cards to access massive payments of up $40,000 per ATM. 'We're making bread, we're printing money right now,' said one man in a video posted on TikTok. 'If you work S.Y.E.P., hit me up.' ABC7 City officials insisted no tax dollars have been lost, making it unclear who absorbed the costs of the illegal withdrawals. The case – first reported by the New York Times — is being investigated by both the NYPD and Department of Youth and Community Development. Advertisement 'We are deeply disturbed by scammers preying on our participants just as they started their work assignments to support themselves and their families,' DYCD spokesman Mark Zustovich. He also insisted the agency 'quickly launched an investigation with the vendors who oversee the SYEP pay card system, to make sure our participants' earnings are as secure as possible' and have 'worked diligently to educate' participants about 'scams and fraud activities.' Investigators are trying to determine the origin of the scam, who was involved and how many cards were involved but lacked answers as of Saturday. 3 'Sometimes it was five to 10 transactions. A few times we saw 100 to 200 transactions consecutively,' said Youserf Mubairrez, CEO of ATM World Corp. ABC7 Advertisement ATM World Corp. told ABC-7 News its records show the same card was used multiple times on its ATM machines to score $43,000. There was $200 limit per transaction but no limit on how many one could make and how much cash one could take out. 'Sometimes it was five to 10 transactions. Young people ages 16 to 24 – many from poor and minority families — are paid $16.50 minimum wage for up to 25 hours a week in what are typically their first formal jobs. Participants with bank accounts get paid via direct deposit, but since 2003 those without received payment cards that can be used at ATMs to get their weekly earnings. About 30,000 were set up to be paid by card this year, The Times reported.
