Gilbert Arenas arrested alongside Israeli crime figure over illegal gambling business allegations
Gambling has become a big part of the sports world, and there have been punishments that have come down when players end up getting involved. In this most recent situation, it had to do with former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, and he was arrested after allegedly being a part of an illegal gambling business, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.
'Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas and suspected Israeli crime figure were arrested today on federal indictment alleging they operated illegal gambling business in which high-stakes poker games were played at Encino mansion Arenas owned,' Haynes wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
Arenas is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators.
Five other people were charged in the indictment and arrested in connection with the illegal gambling business, and were charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and one count of operating an illegal gambling business.
As stated in the indictment, from September 2021 to July 2022, Arenas and the other defendants built an illegal gambling business. Arenas decided to rent out an Encino mansion he owned for the purpose of hosting high-stakes illegal poker games.
Arthur Kats, who lived in West Hollywood, would stage the mansion to host the games, find co-conspirators to host the games, and would collect rent from the co-conspirators on Arenas' behalf.
According to the indictment, the other defendants would manage illegal poker games at the Encino mansion and collect a rake, which was a fee the house charged from each pot either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand.
If they're convicted, the defendants would face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count.

Here's what the newsletter is covering this week: The extremely graphic story of Japan's 'Twitter Killer.' In June 2025, a serial killer in Japan named Takahiro Shiraishi, known as the "Twitter Killer," was executed by hanging — Japan's first execution since 2022. Shiraishi had been convicted of murdering and dismembering nine people (eight of them women or teenage girls) in 2020. Back in 2017, Shiraishi would use Twitter (now called X) to lure his victims to his apartment. He specifically targeted users who posted about having suicidal thoughts and would tell them that he could 'help them in their plans.' However, once his victims arrived, Shiraishi sexually assaulted, strangled, and then murdered them. He even dismembered their bodies. Later, authorities would find cooler boxes containing human heads and bones 'with the flesh scraped off.' Shiraishi went on to plead guilty to murdering the victims, saying in court that he had 'killed them to satisfy his own sexual desires.' The creepy experience one of our BuzzFeed Community members had in Monticello, Mississippi — a seemingly quiet southern town. "Dated a girl from there, and aside from the inbreeding that went on, the whole town seemed 'too happy.' I can't describe it. False cheeriness, like the townspeople had something to hide. It felt very surreal. Years later, I learned it was near where they had the Valley of the Kings cult, where the leader and his son were sexually abusing minor-age members of the congregation." The Valley of the Kings Church was a small religious group led by a man named David Earl King. He ran the group from a large compound with homes, a church, and a farm. King had total control over everything, and people who lived there — especially women and children — were often mistreated, with people describing it as cult-like. In 2001, King and his adopted son were arrested and later convicted of sexually abusing a teenage boy, who attended their church and school, and other serious crimes. King died in prison in 2017, and the "church" no longer exists. The (possible) existence of a medieval torture device called a breast ripper. The breast ripper was supposedly used to punish women, especially those accused of things like cheating or having an abortion. It had sharp claws, sometimes heated, that would be clamped onto a woman's breast and then pulled or twisted — just as the name implies. Apparently, there were even versions that attached to a wall where the woman would be pulled away from it instead. Now, there's not a ton of proof that this device was really ever used, but if it was…yikes. The violent and shocking murder of actor Sharon Tate (and her unborn child), along with four others on Aug. 9, 1969. On the night of Aug. 8–9, 1969, Sharon Tate, who was eight and a half months pregnant, was killed by members of the Manson Family cult at her Los Angeles home. Under the direction of Charles Manson, four of his followers — Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian (who served as a lookout) — broke into Tate's home and killed her along with four others: Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger, Wojciech Frykowski, and Steven Parent. The murders were carried out in a frenzy of extreme violence, with the victims being either shot, stabbed (multiple times), or even bludgeoned to death. Tate, who was brutally stabbed and strangled to death, reportedly pleaded for the life of her unborn child before she died. Atkins, Krenwinkel, and Watson (the three who actually committed the murders) were all sentenced to death. Atkins died in prison in 2009, Krenwinkel was recommended for parole in May 2025, and Watson will be eligible for a parole hearing in October 2026. Finally, the case of Bobby Joe Long, aka the "Classified Ad Rapist," who killed at least 10 women in Florida in the '80s. Long was a serial rapist and murderer who terrorized Florida's Tampa Bay area in 1984, killing at least 10 women after previously assaulting dozens. He would target his victims after finding them through personal ads in Florida, thus being called the "Classified Ad Rapist." Long's crime spree ended when 17-year-old Lisa McVey, whom he abducted and later released, provided crucial information that led to his arrest. Convicted of multiple crimes, Long was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2019. His last meal: Roast beef, bacon, French fries, and soda. Israel arming anti-Hamas Gaza clans, including leader accused of looting aid trucks: reports
Israel is arming local gangs in the Gaza Strip to weaken Hamas, but the efforts are propping up a man accused of looting aid trucks, according to a new report. Yasser Abu Shabab, whose 'Popular Forces' militia is active in southern Gaza, has openly challenged Hamas and touted himself as a liberator overseeing the humanitarian aid distribution within his territory. AFP via Getty Images Shabab, who regularly shares video of his forces on social media, declared the eastern section of Rafah as his domain last month, where 2,000 refugees reportedly live under his group's care. The set up came around the same time Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed that his military was actively arming influential gangs in Gaza as a way to 'oppose' Hamas. While Netanyahu didn't name Shabab's group directly, the clan leader's base is in an area controlled by the Israeli Defense Forces, with his militia caught on video several times operating alongside the IDF. One of the videos was verified by the Guardian, showing the armed men working with IDF soldiers at the Kerem Shalom crossing despite the gang not being recognized by any independent humanitarian group operating in Gaza. 5 Shabab has denied allegations that his group works directly with the Israeli military, which has begun providing arms to local clan leaders. Shabab has repeatedly denied the allegations that he works with the Israeli military, slamming them as nothing more than Hamas propaganda. Despite Shabab's efforts to distance himself from the Jewish state, Israeli media has propped him as the man who can succeed Hamas and steer Gaza in a new direction following Netanyahu's proposal to have the Strip led by local leaders approved by Israel. 5 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the policy of arming local clans as a way to weaken Hamas and save the lives of Israeli soldiers. REUTERS Shabab's rise to prominence, however, has been marred by repeated allegations that his group was behind the armed robberies of aid trucks in southern Gaza. International aid groups that operated in the Strip had accused Shabab and his armed men of systematically looting the trucks delivering food and essential items enroute to refugees. While Shabab initially denied the claims, he later admitted that his men raided half a dozen aid trucks out of desperation, The New York Times reported. Both Shabab and Israel had claimed that Hamas was behind the systematic looting of humanitarian aid in Gaza, but the IDF acknowledged last week that it had no evidence to support the claim. Shabab has also been accused of smuggling drugs and weapons out of Gaza before the war began, with his associates conducting business with the Islamic State branch based in Sinai, according to the WaPo. Israel's plan to bolster local clans is reminiscent of its failed 'Village League' strategy in the West Bank during the 70s and 80s, where the Jewish state gave money and privileges to carry arms to local clan leaders to oppose the Palestine Liberation Organization.

On Thursday, chilling footage showed Israeli hostage Rom Braslavski ghostly and frail as he cried during the six-minute video. Both were kidnapped during a music festival during the October 7 terror attack and are among the remaining 20 hostages believed to still be alive. 'They are on the absolute brink of death,' brother Ilay David said Saturday, speaking in English before a crowd of thousands at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv, as thousands of protesters gathered for their weekly demonstrations to call for the release of the hostages. David called on President Trump to bring about the hostages' release 'by any means necessary.' 'To remain silent now is to be complicit in their slow agonizing death,' he said. US special envoy Steve Witkoff, meanwhile, told Israeli hostages' families in a meeting in Tel Aviv Saturday, that he had no news of progress in talks with Hamas, according to Hebrew media. 'I hear your frustration. But the situation is complicated. There are many reasons [for this] that I cannot detail,' Witkoff said, also emphasizing to the families that President Trump's mission is to bring everyone home. 'We now need to bring all of them home. We are very close to ending the war,' he said, according to the statement. 'We have a plan to end the war and bring everyone home.' 'No piecemeal deals,' Witkoff said. 'That doesn't work. And we've tried everything.' a comprehensive Gaza ceasefire-hostage agreement and would no longer seek 'piecemeal deals,'and is opposed to expanding the fighting in Gaza. The effort was complicated, he said, but he believed it would ultimately succeed. The terror group later vowed not to disarm 'as long as the occupation exists' and until there is a fully sovereign Palestinian state. Israel could announce a plan to annex parts of the Gaza Strip to pressure Hamas to accept a cease-fire deal, according to a cabinet minister.
