Shubman Gill Given Fixed Deadline To Prove Captaincy, BCCI Sent Message
Former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri believes that the team management should keep supporting Shubman Gill as captain even if they lose the Test series against England. The series against England was Gill's debut as captain, as he succeeded Rohit Sharma. The retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit also meant that Gill had extra pressure with a new-look team for the series. Following the loss in the first Test match, Shastri praised Gill for his maturity and asked the team to support him.
'He's matured a lot. The way he handles the media, the way he talks at press conferences, at tosses—he's matured a lot. Let him be there for three years. Don't chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you,' Shastri told Wisden.
Shastri also said that Gill has all the components to be successful in the future.
'I'll be disappointed if Gill doesn't go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he's got a regal element of being regal out there when he's batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that's the one name I can see,' he added.
India's right-arm seamer Prasidh Krishna shared his thoughts on newly appointed Test skipper Shubman Gill where he said the young middle-order batter had a "very good atmosphere" in the dressing room.
Speaking on Gill's captaincy and leadership skills at the press-conference, Krishna said, "I think he did a pretty good job. All of us saw how he rotated the bowlers, made sure everybody had enough breaks, brought in people at the right kind of spells, he saw opportunities and brought in the right kind of bowlers. All of that was great and knowing him, he set a very good atmosphere around. He's been speaking to all of us, we always go in with a plan and the communication is happening there."
Gill joined the elite list of Indians, which includes Sunil Gavaskar, Virat Kohli, Vijay Hazare and Dilip Vengsarkar to score 100 on Test captaincy debut.

Riding on captain Thomas Rew's brilliant century, England scraped through with a narrow one-wicket win over India in the second Youth ODI to level the five-match series 1-1 in Northampton on Monday. India, who had won the first match by six wickets at Hove on June 27, posted 290 in 49 overs after being asked to bat. England then chased down the target with three balls to spare, reaching 291 for 9 in 49.3 overs. Medium pacer RS Ambrish took four wickets for 80 runs from his 10 overs to raise hopes of an Indian victory but the last English pair of Sebastian Morgan (20 not out) and Alex French (3 not out) survived the final two overs to give their side a win in a see-saw battle. The home side made a shaky start in their run chase with opener BJ Dawkins (7) back in the dressing room in the second over at team score of just seven. They slumped to 46 for 2 and then to 47 for 3 in the 12th over with Ambrish taking the wickets of Ben Mayes (27) and Isaac Mohammed (11) in quick succession. But Rew (131 off 89 balls) and Rocky Flintoff (39) resurrected the England innings with a 123-run stand for the fourth wicket before the latter got out off Kanishk Chouhan in the 33rd over. Rew, who hit 16 fours and six sixes in his masterly innings, fell in the 40th over off the bowling of Henil Patel and that led to a batting collapse as England were reduced to 254 for 8 by the 46th over. England needed 20 runs from three overs and 12 from two but they had just two wickets in hand. Alex Green (12) fell in the first ball of the penultimate over, the third victim for Ambrish, and England needed seven runs from the final over with the last pair at the crease. England eventually crossed the line with Morgan hitting a four off the third ball of the final over bowled by Yudhajit Guha. Earlier, asked to bat first, opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi (45), Vihaan Malhotra (49), Rahul Kumar (47), Kanishk Chouhan (45) and Abhigyan Kundu (32) made useful contribution to take India to 290 from 49 overs. This was after opener and captain Ayush Mhatre was dismissed for a duck off the first ball of the innings. However, India recovered from that jolt with the other top and middle-order batters coming good. Suryavanshi was among the runs for the second time as he had also made 48 in India's comprehensive win in the first match. For England, AM French was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4/71 from his 10 overs while Jack Home (3/63) and Alex Green (3/50) were among the wickets. The home side conceded 32 extras, including 26 wides. Doeschate confirms Bumrah's
Birmingham [UK], June 30 (ANI): India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah is 'available' for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, but it is yet to be decided whether he would feature in the final XI, considering his limited utilisation for the five-match series. After the conclusion of the series opener, head coach Gautam Gambhir declared that the management would not budge on Bumrah's three-match utilisation. There were recommendations from fans and former cricketers to use Bumrah in all five Tests, but Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload. Numerous reports have suggested that India won't line up without Bumrah for the second Test. Doeschate addressed the concerns about Bumrah and declared that he is 'available' but the management is yet to make a call on whether to send him to the on-field action or not. 'Yeah, he's available for the game, obviously. We know from the start he's only going to play three out of the five. He's obviously had eight days to recover from the last Test. But given conditions and workload and how we think we can best manage for the next four games, we haven't made a call on that. We're going to see what the other guys are with their workload as well. So technically, yes, he's available. But we haven't made a decision on whether he's going to play or not yet,' Doeschate told reporters in a press conference. India lined up with its pace spearhead, Bumrah, in the series opener at Headingley but still ended on the wrong side of the result. He dazzled in the first innings with figures of 5/83 but lost his magic and returned wicketless in the second. With Bumrah's threat vanished into thin air, England trounced India by gunning down a 371-run target, their second-highest successful chase in the format. With the crafty quick available for two Tests out of four, Doeschate affirmed that they have to evaluate which surface would be optimum to get the best out of the 31-year-old. 'With Bumrah, he is ready to play. So, like I said in the very first question, it's how we manage these four tests. So if we feel like there's value in playing him in this Test, we'll make that call at the very last minute. But I'm talking about whether, how the pitch is going to play. Are we better off holding him back for Lord's and maybe Manchester or the Oval? So it's all those factors,' he said. Bumrah returned to the nets on Saturday during the optional training session. The final call will be taken by India, considering how good Bumrah feels about his body going into the Test. 'But you've seen him train yesterday. He trained a little bit today. It's not like he's not fit to play. It's just trying to fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of him, out of what we know we do have from him,' he added. Wait for Jofra Archer continues as England announce unchanged playing XI for second Test against India
Birmingham [UK], June 30 (ANI): England named an unchanged XI for the second Test against India, slated to kick off on Wednesday at Edgbaston for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The Three Lions roared in the opener and raced to a 1-0 lead in the five-match series after gunning down a record-shattering 371-run target in the first Test at Headingley, their second-highest successful chase in the format. For the second Test, tearaway Jofra Archer was included in the initial 14-player squad, raising hopes of his return to the format for the first time in more than four years. However, the 30-year-old missed the training session due to a family emergency, according to Sky Sports. England called up Archer for a red-ball contest for the first time since February 2021 after being named in the squad for the contest in Birmingham. His inclusion comes in the aftermath of his recent return to first-class action in the County Championship for the first time in more than four years. England men's director of cricket, Rob Key, had hinted at the prospect of Archer taking his run-up to make early inroads in the second Test. However, the Ben Stokes-led side will be Archer-less as they look to take a firm grip on the series. Apart from Archer, Jacob Bethell continues to sit on the sidelines patiently waiting for an opportunity to come his way. Ollie Pope's blistering 106 and Zak Crawley's composed 65 have made it hard for the youngster to make his way back into the XI. England's most experienced speedster in the current setup, Chris Woakes, had unstinting praise in store for Archer, who forced his way back into the Test fold after overcoming a period that has been plagued with injuries ahead of the second Test against India at Edgbaston. Woakes hailed Archer for the journey he made to earn a call-up back into the side and told reporters in a press conference on Monday, 'Brilliant for Joff, brilliant for us as a team. Obviously, it's a big boost to have him back. When Joff's around, he adds a lot to the group. Not just as a player but as a person, as a character. He's obviously had a tough journey over the last few years with his injuries.' 'I think it's credit to him, the hard work that he's put in, to be able to be back in this position now. To be able to hopefully play Test cricket again. But yeah, as I said, more delight for him than us, really, because I know how hard it is to go through long spells of injuries,' he added.
