2025 Open Championship: Amateurs To Watch
UNC Charlotte had a strong showing, sending two amateur players through qualifying to the Open Championship. Englishman Frazer Jones, a UNC Charlotte player, qualified after shooting 73–70 at Burnham & Berrow. Jones birdied four holes on his final nine to secure a spot.
Fellow Englishman and UNC Charlotte standout Sebastian Cave also qualified, carding rounds of 67–72 at Royal Cinque Ports.
Estonian player Richard Teder had perhaps the most dramatic qualification story. Teder had his spot nearly secured going into the final hole but double-bogeyed after pulling his drive into the native area. His misstep on the 18th put him into a 4-for-2 playoff, which quickly became a 3-for-1. Teder found the fairway with his drive and then holed out for eagle from 80 yards to clinch his spot at The Open. He is the first Estonian ever to qualify for the championship.

At Dundonald Links, world No. 47 amateur Connor Graham birdied the first playoff hole to earn his place. The Texas Tech standout won the British Amateur in both 2024 and 2025 and finished 37th at the 2025 European Amateur. His 2025 British Amateur win came at Open Championship rota course Royal St. George's. Graham appears to be the strongest amateur contender in the field.
With only four amateur players in this year's Open Championship, their odds of winning appear slim. However, Graham, Cave, and Jones all have notable experience and success on links courses, while Teder enters as a true Cinderella story and the first-ever Estonian to play in The Open.

Bell confident Wales can get over the line against Italy
By Phil Campbell Freya Bell is confident Wales have the players at their disposal to finish the 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series off with a win when they take on Italy on Thursday. The competition hosts bounced back from an opening day loss at the hands of Ireland with a standout 52-29 victory over Scotland on Friday evening. 'Whereas, in the second game, everyone chilled out, we started off strong and we did what we needed to do. 'In this next game against Italy, we want to put together a strong game for 80 minutes. Italy let slip a 15-0 half-time lead against England to lose 36-20, having also tasted a 45-6 defeat to France in the first round. And Bell said everyone in the Wales camp is wary of the threat they can pose. 'They've got some very big ball carriers,' she continued. 2025 Open Championship odds, picks: Is this Tyrrell Hatton's breakthrough?
For the final time this season, players will tee it up in a major championship. The 2025 Open Championship is back at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, the site of Shane Lowry's win in 2019. The first round begins on Thursday morning, with the winner taking home the Claret Jug on Sunday afternoon. Below, we look at Open Championship odds from BetMGM Sportsbook's odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions. As usual, Scottie Scheffler enters the week as the favorite to win with odds of +500, but Rory McIlroy isn't far behind. He's +700 to win in his home country of Northern Ireland, which would be his second career Open title. Jon Rahm has the third-best odds at +1200, followed by fellow LIV Golf champion Bryson DeChambeau at +2200. Lowry is +2500 to win once again at Royal Portrush. Royal Portrush is a par 71 and plays at 7,381 with undulating greens and tall dunes outlining holes. The fairways aren't as wide and sprawling as some other links courses can be, making accuracy off the tee essential. Given its modest length, players will likely be hitting a lot of mid-irons into the greens, which are average in size but slope pretty heavily. Lowry ran away from the field with a 6-shot victory here in 2019, finishing 15-under par despite shooting 1-over on Sunday. It's understandable for anyone to be a bit down on McIlroy since his Masters win because, well, his game hasn't exactly been in peak form. However, he had a near-win on Sunday at the Genesis Scottish Open and closed well at the Travelers Championship last month. Plus, he's playing a course that's only about 60 miles from where he grew up. He never gave himself a chance at the 2019 Open when he made a quadruple bogey on his opening hole and finished the day 8-over, but he came back on Friday and fired a 65 to only miss the cut by 1. Schauffele only has 2 top-10s in his Open Championship career, but one of those was a victory and he's only finished worse than 26th once (T-41 in 2019 at Royal Portrush). He hasn't missed a cut in a major since 2022 and finished T-8, T28 and T-12 in this year's majors. His game is peaking at the perfect time after coming in eighth at the Scottish Open, hopefully carrying that over to this week's Open. If there's a major Hovland is going to win, it feels like the Open is the perfect one. Before missing the cut last year, he finished T-12, T-4 and T-13 in his 3 Open Championship appearances. That's a strong track record for a player with his ball-striking ability. Yes, his short game will be important this week but in the majors, hitting fairways and greens is typically the best measure of success. This number is fairly short for a player like Hatton, but he tied for sixth here in 2019 without shooting a single round over par. He's had a good year in the majors, making all 3 cuts so far with a T-14 and a T-4 mixed in. He should feel at home playing links golf and could be in contention on Sunday if he can avoid making big numbers and control his emotions. Open Championship picks – Contenders Straka finished alone in seventh at the Scottish Open this past week, continuing a stellar year for the Austrian. This will only be his fourth Open Championship, but in the last 2 years, he's finished T-22 and T-2. He's a big-game hunter and tends to show up in the most important events, which bodes well for his chances this week. Spieth withdrew from the Travelers Championship with a neck injury last month but he recently said he's back to full strength after dealing with spasms. That's encouraging as he enters the final major of the year, a tournament he always excels in. He's already won the Claret Jug once and finished T-20 at Royal Portrush in 2019, making the cut in his 11 career appearances – with nothing worse than a T-44, which came in his debut. WATCH: Get ESPN+ Open Championship picks – Long shots After struggling early in the year, Young has come into form recently with back-to-back fourth-place finishes at the RBC Canadian Open and U.S. Open. In 3 Open Championship appearances, he's finished second, eighth and 31st, all in the last 3 years. The biggest thing holding Young back is his putter so if he can simply be average on the greens, he'll have a chance. Kim had a close call in 2023 when he tied as the runner-up in the Open before missing the cut last year. He just tied for 17th in the Scottish Open last week, which is actually his worst career finish in 4 starts at that tournament. Translation: He knows how to play links golf and he tends to do well. Burmester has finished 40th, 11th and 19th in 3 career Open starts, which is a fairly good record for the South African who now plays on the LIV tour.
