Most Online Financial Scam Transactions Made With Victims' Own Consent
BNM Kuala Lumpur Regional Office manager S. Vijayadurai said criminals are now becoming more sophisticated in manipulating their victims, including using fear-based tactics or deceiving them through love scams.
'Some victims are told they are involved in drug or hit-and-run cases, while some scammers even pose as individuals wanting to have romantic ties with the victims,' he said as a guest on Bernama Radio's 'POV: Perspektif Bukan Persepsi Bersama Kamal Affandi Hashim' programme today.
Vijayadurai added that such tactics made victims willingly carry out transactions, often unaware that they are being duped.
In addition, criminals are also found to use technology, such as spoofing, to access applications in victims' smartphones and artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic their voices.
He advised the public to adopt the 3S approach, namely question (soal) the validity of the information received; refrain (sekat) from following the instructions given; and share (sebar) correct information with family and friends.
He said BNM is collaborating with various agencies, including the National Anti-Financial Crime Centre (NFCC), Royal Malaysia Police, (PDRM), Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), the banking industry and the telecommunication industry, through the establishment of the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) to coordinate responses towards fraud cases.
Fraud victims, he added, must promptly report to the NSRC by calling 997, in addition to lodging a police report to facilitate further action.
'Usually, the money taken by scammers will be received through a mule account, which is used by a third party and then used for illegal purposes.

MCMC probes trio over viral leftovers video given to homeless man
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has taken statements from three individuals linked to a controversial video that went viral on social media. The clip, which showed them offering leftover food to a homeless man, triggered widespread backlash online. MCMC confirmed that the individuals were questioned today at the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters in Johor. Authorities seized three mobile phones and SIM cards as part of the investigation. Over 400 tonnes of used batteries seized from unlicensed waste facility in Kedah
ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Environment Department has taken action against a factory in the Bukit Selambau Industrial Area, Sungai Petani, suspected of conducting unlicensed off-site scheduled waste storage and recovery activities. Its director Sharifah Zakian Syed Sahab said the action was taken during the "Ops Gempur" operation from 9am to 1pm on Tuesday (Aug 5), which revealed the facility was operating without Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval or a valid licence. "During the inspection, we found approximately 100 tonnes of used lithium batteries and around 317 tonnes of crushed used batteries, both classified as scheduled waste," she said in a statement on Tuesday. Additionally, about 20 tonnes of recovered metal powder were discovered on site. She said the department seized the factory's production equipment under Section 38(1)(a) of the Environmental Quality Act 1974, as they were being operated without pollution control systems or department approval. Investigations are ongoing under Sections 18(1), 34A(6) and 34B(1) of the same Act. Sharifah Zakian said they would continue to strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts, particularly targeting illegal waste processing activities that cause environmental pollution and pose public health risks.
