Xander Schauffele figures only a 'blackout' performance is going to catch Scottie Scheffler at The Open
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland – Xander Schauffele figured he needed a 'blackout' performance Sunday at The Open to have any chance of catching Scottie Scheffler, who continued to pull away from the field at Royal Portrush.
Despite a third-round 66 that moved him into the top 10 at the year's final major, Schauffele has learned, repeatedly, how difficult it is when you spot the world No. 1 a commanding lead. In fact, when pressed to explain exactly what a 'blackout' performance was, he deferred to Scheffler.
'Blackout would just be you're so in your own world. For me, when I use the word 'blackout' in golf, it's like when I watch Scottie play a lot, he just looks blacked out to me, just doing his thing,' said Schauffele, who is at 7 under. 'He's just in his own world and nothing's going to bother him. He gets to that place often, which is a good thing for him.'
Schauffele added there are multiple definitions for 'blackout.'
'It's used in different terms. If you drink a few too many, if you go to Harbour Bar, there might be a few blackedout guys there,' Schauffele smiled.
If Scheffler continues his blackout performance Sunday at Royal Portrush, the rest of the field may opt for that second definition and head to the Harbour Bar for a few Guinness.

(First open-to-the-public practice is next Saturday.) MARLINS: Fightin' Fish stay hot after All-Star Break: The Marlins are within five games of .500 (46-51) and within 6 1/2 in the NL wild-card race after starting the second half 3-0. Miami has now won four straight overall and is on a 16-6 run entering today's series-ender vs. Kansas City. Sizzlin' Fish then have three more at home vs. San Diego before hitting the road. Might Miami be a buyer before the July 31 trade deadline? The question itself was preposterous before the recent streak. 3. INTER MIAMI: Another Messi braces leads big Herons win: Miami is 12-4 (with five ties) and fifth in the MLS East after Saturday's big 5-1 road win at New York Red Bulls followed a 3-0 Wednesday loss at Cincinnati. Lionel Messi had two more goals -- extraordinarily his sixth brace in the last seven games. The Herons are at home next Saturday in a rematch vs. Cincy before league schedule pauses for Leagues Cup play starting July 30 in Fort Lauderdale vs. Mexican side Atlas. 4. HURRICANES: UM preseason launches with ACC Football Kickoff: ACC Football Kickoff (a.k.a. annual Media Days) is this Tuesday through Thursday in Charlotte, N.C., with Canes training camp to soon follow. Mario Cristobal drew an early Tuesday slot and will be the second of 17 head coaches to speak. Meantime the Walter Camp Preseason All-America first team includes two Canes: offensive lineman Francis Mauigoa and kick returner Keelan Marion. Miami, off a 10-3 season and narrowly missing the 12-team playoff, debuts at home Aug. 31 in a marquee season opener vs. Notre Dame. 5. GOLF: Scheffler in command, chasing 4th major at British Open: World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the pre-tournament betting favorite ahead of Rory McIlroy, owns a big 4-shot lead entering Sunday's final round of the British Open in Portrush, Northern Ireland. Scheffler is chasing his fourth major win after two Masters triumphs and the PGA Championship trophy earlier this year. He recently said, 'I'm not out here to inspire someone to be the best player in the world, because, what's the point? This is not a fulfilling life.' Please. C'mon, Scott. If you aren't fulfilled dominating your profession as crowds cheer and money rolls in, that's on you. 6. SOCCER: England, Spain lead mammoth semis in Women's Euro '25: The 14th iteration of the UEFA women's European Championships is down to the semifinals in Switzerland: Reigning champ England vs. Italy and Spain vs. Germany. The championship match is next Sunday. England won its first crown in '22 on home turf. Italy is a two-time runnerup. Betting favorite Spain is in its first Euro final. COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Stirring the pot on Saban return ... to Dolphins?: Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy, in an interview with ESPN's Paul Finebaum during SEC media days, said 'somebody notable' whom he has 'lots of respect for' told him Nick Saban isn't done coaching. The legend stepped down after the '24 season and replacement Kalen DeBoer went a disappointing 9-4 in his first year. Asked, DeBoer said politely, 'Well, he's one of the greatest to ever do it, and so he's earned the right to do what he wants.' Finebaum suggested Nick Saban 'go down to Miami, shake that system up' by returning to the Dolphins, who he coached in 2005-06. For what it's worth, Saban's daughter said on Instagram that Dad's not coming back. 8. HEAT: Miami misses NBA Summer League playoffs: Heat's kiddie corps finished a blah 2-3 in main NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, though ending with a one-point win over Milwaukee led by Vladislav Goldin's 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in 22 minutes. From a four-team playoffs it's Sacramento vs. Charlotte Sunday night in an unlikely final for the Summer crown ... but does it matter? Anyone recall the Heat won the 2024 Summer League title? Probably not. Did it foretell a big season for Miami? Um, no. 9. WNBA: Caitlin's injury deflates All-Star Weekend: The WNBA All-Star Game in Indianapolis went on Saturday night with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark a cheerleader in street clothes because of a groin injury -- a massive letdown. Such is the impact of the league's most popular star. Clark has missed 10 of the Fever's 23 games with various injuries. Clark and Napheesa Collier were All-Star team captains; Team Collier won 151-131 in a defensive struggle (!) led by Napheesa's 36 points. In other news, WNBA star rookie Paige Bueckers confirmed she is dating former UConn teammate Azzi Fudd. So there. 10. MEDIA: ESPYs fail to honor double-champ Panthers: No shock or issue with U.S. gymnast Simone Biles and NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander winning best female and male athlete at the latest annual ESPY Awards. And South Florida's Coco Gauff winning best tennis player was a nice surprise. But 'best team' to the Philadelphia Eagles? After the Florida Panthers won a second straight Stanley Cup? Plain football bias by voting fans and the erstwhile Worldwide Leader in Sports. Sergio Garcia snaps driver in half on second hole of Open final round
It didn't take long for Sergio Garcia to lose his temper – and his driver. After a poor drive Sunday at Royal Portrush's par-5 second hole, Garcia recoiled his driver and slammed the club into the turf. The shaft immediately snapped in half. Sergio Garcia breaking his Driver at tbe 153rd @TheOpen #Golf Despite the frustration, Garcia salvaged birdie on the hole, and playing the rest of the round with 13 clubs, Garcia shot 3-under 71 to finish his Open Championship at 3 under. Garcia began his LIV Golf season with a win and two other top-10s in his first five starts. But he has just one top-10 – and two top-25s – in five events since. He made two of his three major cuts as well, though he likely won't have cracked the top 30 in either of them. As a result, Garcia arguably has done little to boost his Ryder Cup prospects in recent events. 'I had a good conversation with [European captain Luke Donald] last week, and we both know what we want,' Garcia said earlier this week. 'The only thing I can do is keep working hard, keep building my confidence up, and if I'm able to do that, then it should be fine. We'll see.'

Scottie Scheffler on verge of another major with four-shot lead at The Open
PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland — Scottie Scheffler moved within one round of claiming the third leg of the Grand Slam on Saturday when he made an eagle and two big par saves for a 4-under 67 in The Open that gave him a four-shot lead at Royal Portrush. The roars belonged to Rory McIlroy, who had seemingly all of Northern Ireland on his side, the most raucous cheer coming on a 55-foot eagle putt. But this championship is now in the hands of Scheffler, who has won his last 10 times when he had the 54-hole lead and didn't show anything on a stunning day at Royal Portrush to indicate he was going to come back to his challengers. 'I'm just trying to execute, not overthinking things,' Scheffler said. 'I feel like I've been doing the right thing so far, and I'm looking forward to the challenge of tomorrow.' Tied with Matt Fitzpatrick for the lead, Scheffler judged 6-iron perfectly to 10 feet for eagle on the par-5 seventh hole. In deep trouble behind the 11th green, he hacked out to 10 feet to save par, then saved another par from the deep grass left of the 14th fairway. Royal Portrush has a nasty par 3 at No. 16 known as 'Calamity Corner.' Scheffler made birdie for the third straight day, this time a 3-iron that settled 15 feet below the cup . Each shot helped him pull away from the field. Each shot moved him closer to the claret jug, to go along with the PGA Championship he won in May and the two Masters green jackets he has won in two in the last four years. Scheffler was at 14-under 199, four shots clear of Li Haotong of China (69) and five ahead of Fitzpatrick, who missed two short par putts and fell back with a 71. McIlroy, who revved up the enormous crowd with three birdies in four holes at the start, had the most bizarre moment of the championship when he went to gouge out a shot from the rough right of the 11th fairway and a second ball emerged from the turf. 'It's never happened to me before,' McIlroy said after his 66. 'It could never on any other course but a links course.' It led to his lone bogey. He responded with that eagle putt that elicited a roar that rocked Royal Portrush. But he was six shots behind, and likely needing a round even better on Sunday. 'Scottie is ... it's inevitable,' McIlroy said. 'Even when he doesn't have his best stuff, he's become a complete player. Yeah, it's going to be tough to catch him tomorrow if he keeps playing the way he does. But if I can get out tomorrow and get off to a similar start to what I did today, get the crowd going ... you never know.' This is what McIlroy noticed last year, when Scheffler won nine times around the world. What impressed him was that Scheffler played so many bogey-free rounds. Scheffler picked a great time for another one. He led by one shot to start the day and couldn't seem to get anything going — his first three-putt of the championship on the par-5 second to settle for par, and a 10-foot par save on the par-3 third. Fitzpatrick, who missed a short par putt on the first hole and made bogey, atoned for that quickly by chipping in for eagle on the next hole. He did his best to keep pace even after Scheffler went eagle-birdie toward the end of the back nine. But he missed a 4-foot par putt on the 13th, got a bad bounce on the 17th that led to another bogey and wound up five shots behind. 'Just didn't make any putts. I didn't hit it close enough,' Fitzpatrick said. 'Drove it well enough, didn't hit it close enough. Just made way less putts than Scottie.' Golf Channel Staff , Scheffler will be paired in the last group with Li, who made history in 2020 at the PGA Championship when he held the 36-hole lead, the first player from China to lead in a major. Li didn't make his first bogey until the 13th hole, and he dropped another shot on the 18th by driving into a pot bunker. Scottish Open champion Chris Gotterup, in his first appearance in The Open, had a 68 and joined the group at 8-under 205 that included McIlroy, Harris English (68) and Tyrrell Hatton (68). This is Scheffler's largest 54-hole lead in a major — he was up by three shots at the PGA Championship and three shots in the 2022 Masters.
