Tanner Houck's lost year for Red Sox ends with Tommy John surgery
Shortly before Boston's 7-3 win over the Astros on Saturday, Red Sox manager Alex Cora announced that Houck will undergo Tommy John surgery.
'Tanner's going to have Tommy John surgery,' Cora told reporters during his pregame press conference. 'He went to see Dr. [Keith] Meister there in Texas, and that was the recommendation.'

Houck, 29, has been on the injured list since May because of a right flexor pronator strain, and was transferred to the 60-day IL on Thursday after a failed rehab stint.
The right-hander was unable to replicate his success in 2024, going 0-3 with an abysmal 8.04 ERA through nine starts this season.
Last year, Houck pitched to a 3.12 ERA with 154 strikeouts in 178⅔ innings, earning him his first trip to the All-Star game.
Houck attempted to make a comeback earlier this season, but was only able to make five appearances between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, going 1-3 with a 5.74 ERA across the two levels.

The St. Louis native was drafted by the Red Sox with the No. 24 overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft and has been in the majors since 2020.
Despite the season-ending injury, Cora remained confident that Houck would be able to make a successful return.
'Tough year for him, tough year for us,' Cora said. 'But he'll kill the rehab, he'll do his job, and when he comes back, he's going to be OK.'

Houck is now the third starting pitcher for Boston to be out for the season, with Hunter Dobbins tearing his ACL in July and Kutter Crawford undergoing season-ending surgery on his wrist in June.
Crawford's injury happened off the field according to Cora, but the manager clarified that it was not 'irresponsible.'
'It's just an accident,' Cora told reporters at the time.
'It just sucks that it happened this way. I'm not going to get into it, but it wasn't irresponsible.'

Kyle Schwarber's 2-run shot, grand slam powers Phillies to 13-3 rout of Orioles
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice, including a grand slam in Philadelphia's eight-run sixth inning, and the Phillies pounded the Baltimore Orioles 13-3 win on Monday night. Schwarber finished with six RBIs, running his major league-leading total to 94 on the season. Schwarber's first homer of the game was a two-run shot deep into the second deck that tied it at 3 in the third. He heard 'MVP! MVP!' chants when he came to the plate in the sixth. Schwarber, the All-Star Game MVP, launched his NL-best 40th of the season into the right-center seats off Yaramil Hiraldo for a grand slam that sent the crowd of 41,099 into a frenzy. Harrison Bader homered for the first time since he was acquired by the Phillies at the trade deadline, a tiebreaking three-run shot earlier in the sixth. The Phillies added closer Jhoan Duran and Bader in trades on consecutive days with Minnesota. With his 102.5 mph fastball and electric entrance, Duran was an instant fan favorite in Philly. Bader made his case with a homer off Corbin Martin. Bryce Harper hit a solo shot for the contending Phillies, his 17th. Edmundo Sosa and Weston Wilson hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for a 13-3 lead. Phillies starter Jesús Luzardo (10-5) allowed a two-run homer to Tyler O'Neill and a solo shot to Jordan Westburg over six innings. Key stat Schwarber has reached 40 homers in three of his four seasons with the Phillies. He hit 38 last season. Up next The Orioles send RHP Dean Kremer (8-7, 4.27 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday night against Phillies RHP Taijuan Walker (3-5, 3.82 ERA). ___

Why Red Sox Scratched Outfielder Roman Anthony Moments Before Royals Game
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Red Sox have kicked into high gear as they race toward a potential MLB playoff spot, but Boston might have hit a slight speed bump moments before Monday night's game. Alex Cora had to do a last-minute rewrite of his starting lineup shortly before first pitch against the Kansas City Royals. The Red Sox raised plenty of eyebrows and put New England on high alert by scratching rookie outfielder Roman Anthony. Cora inserted Wyler Abreu -- set for an off-night with left-hander Bailey Falter getting the start for the KC -- into the lineup for Anthony. (Photo by) More The Red Sox later revealed Anthony was scratched due to back tightness. Roman Anthony was scratched because of "mid-back tightness," the Red Sox say. — Tim Healey (@timbhealey) August 4, 2025 The local broadcast captured Anthony trying to stretch out the back shortly before the game but ultimately had to consult with a member of the team's training staff. The Red Sox can't really afford to lose Anthony for an extended period of time. His numbers might not jump off the page with just a pair of home runs, but his batting average has climbed steadily after some early struggles. Anthony entered the week hitting .283 with a 132 OPS+, two figures that show how good he has been fewer than 200 at-bats into his big league career. He hasn't yet qualified, but his under-the-hood numbers (like exit velocity and plate discipline metrics) would rank among the game's best. Boston is already dealing with another injury to one of its young stars, one that has already forced them to shuffle the lineup. Infielder Marcelo Mayer is out with a wrist injury that could end up costing him the season. Regardless, while he's been out, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela has had to play second base. If Anthony has to miss extended time, it likely means Rob Refsnyder would get more run in the starting lineup. More MLB: Dodgers Make Potentially Costly Mookie Betts Decision as Struggles Persist

Kerry Carpenter crushes key home run in Detroit Tigers' 6-3 win vs new-look Twins
Not only did the Minnesota Twins part ways with one-third of the players on their roster, they also shipped out some of their best players at the trade deadline: closer Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies, reliever Griffin Jax to the Tampa Bay Rays and shortstop Carlos Correa to the Houston Astros. Two years ago, the Twins won the American League Central. In 2025, the Detroit Tigers are the AL Central leaders, and looked like in Monday night. The Tigers reminded their division foes of their current dominance in a 6-3 win over the new-look Twins on Monday, Aug. 4, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park. The Twins didn't go down easy, but the Tigers (66-48) pulled away with three runs in the sixth inning, including a 437-foot two-run home run from Kerry Carpenter off right-handed reliever Noah Davis with the fans chanting his first name. Carpenter celebrated the key home run by flipping his bat, holding both arms in the air and trotting to first base. After Gleyber Torres tied the game on a groundout, Carpenter refused to swing at back-to-back pitches for balls before demolishing a 94 mph sinker at the top of the strike zone for a two-run homer, putting the Tigers ahead, 5-3. It was his 19th homer in 85 games this season. The Tigers padded their lead in the seventh inning, thanks to Dillon Dingler's solo home run off right-handed reliever Erasmo Ramírez. He pulled a down-and-in sinker over the wall in left field. It was Dingler's 10th homer. Dingler is hitting .274 with a .749 OPS across 85 games in his first full season in the big leagues. [ MUST LISTEN: Make "Days of Roar" your go-to Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple, Spotify) ] Casey Mize's quality start Right-hander Casey Mize allowed three runs on four hits and zero walks with four strikeouts in six innings, throwing 67 pitches. He entered Monday's game with an 11.42 ERA in his last three starts — following a 2.63 ERA in his first 15 starts. This was a step forward. In 2025, Mize now owns a 3.50 ERA in 19 starts. The Twins tagged Mize for three solo home runs: Ryan Jeffers hit a 94.4 mph sinker for a 420-foot homer in the first inning; Trevor Larnach hit a splitter for a 434-foot homer in the fifth inning; Matt Wallner hit a splitter for a 437-foot homer in the sixth inning. Both splitters were poorly executed pitches. The homer from Wallner landed in the shrubs in center field. Aside from the homers, Mize gave up just one hit on a single to Edouard Julien in the sixth inning, then erased Julien from the bases when Austin Martin grounded into a double play. Wenceel Pérez's development The Tigers fell behind on the scoreboard, but Wenceel Pérez revived them when he hit a two-run home run off right-hander Travis Adams with one out in the fifth inning. Until then, Adams had shut out the Tigers. The Pérez homer tied the game, 2-2. It was Pérez's ninth home run in 54 games (and 197 plate appearances) in his second MLB season — following nine homers in 112 games (and 425 plate appearances) as a rookie last season. Not only has Pérez developed in the power department from Year 1 to Year 2, but he has also improved his batting average (.242 to .262) and his OPS (.683 to .805). For the Twins, Adams allowed two runs on four hits and zero walks with seven strikeouts in five innings, throwing 63 pitches. He generated 16 whiffs on 33 swings for an incredible 48.5% whiff rate.
