Comply with daily schedule of preparation to face civil services exam, Dakshina Kannad ZP CEO tells aspirants at ‘The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling 2025' session
Speaking on the civil services' examination at 'The Hindu EducationPlus Career Counselling 2025' session, Dr. Anandh said it is strange that only a few from Dakshina Kannada, which is known for its highy literacy rate, enter the all-India civil services.
The period of the civil services examination is one year, and aspirants should have a lot of patience during this period. Aspirants should not be swayed away by what others comment. There will be helpless times, which may let the aspirants down. 'Stick to the daily routine of preparation. Yes, it will be difficult. But do the routine of preparation in a disciplined manner, which will help you crack the civil services examination,' he said.
Aspirants can start writing the examination after the age of 21, and they can continue to do so till they are 32. While those from the general category have six attempts, no such specification is prescribed for those from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The general studies paper has questions from core subjects, namely history, economics, politics, geography, and environment. Aspirants can choose any one of 25 subjects as an optional subject. Dr. Anandh said the optional subject should be the one in which one should be proficient and capable of submitting a thesis.

Stronger action against malnutrition, child marriage proposed in Dakshina Kannada
Expressing concern over sluggish progress in nutritional and child welfare programmes, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K Anand has directed officials to urgently strengthen initiatives under the Women and Child Development Department. Chairing a district-level coordination meeting on Thursday, Dr Anand noted that the district lags behind others in implementing the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) and called for immediate improvement in service delivery. He asked Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) to ensure that malnourished children—20 identified as severely undernourished—are admitted without delay to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs), with due care to hygiene and nutrition. 'Our goal should be to make Dakshina Kannada a malnutrition-free district,' he asserted. Dr Anand also stressed the need to ensure pre-primary education for children aged 3 to 5 and suggested using women's groups and gram sabhas to identify and enrol out-of-school children. On the infrastructure front, officials from the Karnataka State Habitat Centre were instructed to expedite Anganwadi building repairs. CDPOs were told to monitor and regularly inspect ongoing works. Two cases of child marriage were reported in the district in the latter half of 2024. Dr Anand urged gram panchayats to hold vigilance meetings to address child marriage and teenage pregnancies, directing that any suspected case be reported to Childline (1098). He also called for awareness drives across community platforms. Highlighting the 13 dowry-related harassment cases recorded in the same period, Dr Anand asked for legal literacy campaigns in mothers' groups, Stree Shakti meetings, and Child Protection Committee sessions. He also recommended urgent repair of the District Bal Bhavan building.

In Kalaburagi, hostel for minority boys in shambles, says SFI
The students in the government-run SC/ST boys' hostel, operated under the Department of Social Welfare, in Kalaburagi district are living under conditions is worst conditions, said the Students' Federation of India (SFI) while urging the social welfare department to take required action. The hostel in dilapidated condition (HT photo) The Babu Jagjivan Ram Hostel Complex, located on Rajapur Road in Kalaburagi city, is home to students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes pursuing post-matric education. However, the hostel has deteriorated into a space where basic amenities are scarce, food is unsafe and security is absent. 'Worms and cockroaches in our meals have become a daily affair,' said one student. 'We've complained multiple times, but the warden, Sanjukumar, never takes it seriously.' The students have alleged that the vegetables and groceries infested with pests are used to cook food and the kitchen staff ork under the influence of tobacco, gutkha, and even alcohol. The SFI has also raised concerns. 'There is no clean drinking water. The same water used in the bathroom is used for cooking,' said Sujata V, district secretary of SFI. 'When students request cleanliness, the staff say it's not their responsibility. Hostel wardens visit only once or twice a week, and taluk-level officers haven't come here for years. The wardens do as they please, and students suffer.' She also alleged that outsiders are frequently allowed into the hostel, enabling a culture of substance abuse. 'Some kitchen workers are also encouraging this behaviour. The warden and district officials are aware of these problems, but they are ignoring them. The Minister for Social Welfare must act immediately.' 'We've written many letters to the Social Welfare Department, but they haven't responded,' said another student. Responding to the situation, Preeti Chandrashekar Doddmani, joint director of the Department of Social Welfare in Kalaburagi, told HT, 'I will visit the hostel soon to review the problems related to basic infrastructure and other issues. Based on my findings, appropriate action will be taken against the responsible staff.'

‘Dharti Aaba' campaign: Special camps in tribal villages of Chamarajanagar
As part of the 'Dharti Aaba Jan Jatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan', a series of special awareness and facilitation camps will be held from June 15 to 30 in 11 tribal villages of Chamarajanagar district. The initiative targets villages where the population of the Scheduled Tribes (ST) exceed 50%, with the goal of empowering tribal communities to access various government welfare schemes. The campaign aims at providing essential documentation support and raise awareness about schemes offered by both the Central and State governments. The identified villages include Bedaguli, Kannegala, Yanagahalli, and Mel Mal in Chamarajanagar taluk; Thondavadi, Somanapura, and Madduru in Gundlupet taluk; Agar, Biligiriranganabetta (B.R. Hills), and D. Kandahalli in Yelandur taluk; and Palya in Kollegal taluk. Seventeen government departments are collaborating to implement around 25 key welfare schemes during the campaign. Nodal officers have been appointed at both the district and taluk levels to oversee operations and ensure effective delivery of services, a press release said. The camps will offer assistance in availing oneself of various schemes and services, including Aadhaar enrolment, Jan Dhan bank account opening, Kisan Credit Cards, insurance schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), Ayushman Bharat Health Card (ABHA), screening and awareness on sickle cell anaemia and tuberculosis under the TB Mukt Bharat initiative, immunisation under the Indradhanush Mission, domicile, caste, and income certificates, MGNREGA job cards, social security pensions (old age, widow, disability), livelihood schemes including PM Vishwakarma, MUDRA loans, and MGNREGA, women and child welfare programmes such as PM Matru Vandana Yojana and ICDS services and updating of vaccination records, the release stated. The camps will be held from June 16 to 27 at Madduru colony, Tribal Ashrama School (Gundlupet taluk); Kannegala, Maramma Temple (Chamarajanagar taluk); Thondavadi, Nayakara Beedi Chowdi (Gundlupet taluk); Yanagahalli, Valmiki Bhavan (Chamarajanagar taluk); Agar village, Hindimaramma Temple premises (Yelandur taluk); Somanapura, Anganwadi Building (Gundlupet taluk); D. Kandahalli, Nayakara Beedi Chowdi (Yelandur taluk); Muratipalya Tribal Ashrama School (Mel Mal village, Chamarajanagar taluk); Yerakanagadde Colony (Soliga Bhavan) and Bangale Podu Valmiki Bhavan (B.R. Hills area); Palya Gram Panchayat premises (Kollegal taluk) and Bedaguli, TVS Coffee Estate (Chamarajanagar taluk). Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Nag has urged all eligible tribal residents in the selected villages to attend the camps on the designated dates and make full use of the services and documentation support provided.
