Amid Language Row At Home, Maharashtra Govt To Provide Curriculum To Marathi Schools In US

In a significant outreach to the global Marathi community, Maharashtra's Information Technology and Cultural Affairs Minister, Ashish Shelar, has assured that the state government will soon provide an official Marathi curriculum to Marathi schools operating in the United States. Currently on a tour of the US, Shelar met office-bearers of the Maharashtra Mandal in the Bay Area, California. The Mandal has been running a Marathi school in San Francisco since 2005, helping second-generation Marathi children learn their mother tongue, culture, history, and the folk traditions of Maharashtra. Around 300 students are enrolled in this school, learning Marathi out of pure community effort and passion. Across the US, more than 50 such volunteer-run Marathi schools are keeping the language alive far from home.
The move comes at a time when the Marathi language has become a point of emotional and political debate back home. In Maharashtra, tensions have simmered for years over the perceived encroachment of Hindi on Marathi's cultural and administrative space. From signboards in Mumbai to school syllabi and competitive exams, pro-Marathi groups have often demanded stronger safeguards to ensure Marathi's primacy in the state. Recent controversies — including demands for mandatory Marathi signage in shops and debates over language policy in schools — have only intensified this sentiment. Against this backdrop, the state government's promise to strengthen Marathi learning even abroad is being seen as an attempt to reassure the global Marathi community that their roots and identity will be nurtured, no matter where they live.
During the meeting in San Francisco, the school's representatives told Minister Shelar that official support from the Maharashtra government would make teaching, examinations, and certification much smoother. Many schools there are run purely on community donations and volunteer teachers, but they lack standardized teaching material and an official stamp that could help students and parents gain confidence in the curriculum's authenticity.
Minister Shelar assured them that he would discuss this initiative with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and School Education Minister Dada Bhuse. He promised that the government will not only prepare and share an official syllabus but also issue necessary recommendations to the local US authorities if needed. For many families living thousands of miles away from Maharashtra, this move could make it easier to pass on their language and cultural roots to their children — ensuring that Marathi thrives, not just in the state, but across the world.

Kerala Guv reappoints two VCs after SC nod
Last Updated: Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 1 (PTI) Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, acting as Chancellor of state universities, on Friday reappointed Dr Ciza Thomas and Dr K Sivaprasad as interim Vice Chancellors of two key institutions after winning clearance from the Supreme Court. The appointments comply with the court's July 30 order, which came after months of legal wrangling between the Raj Bhavan and the state government over the Chancellor's powers. Dr Thomas, former Senior Joint Director at the Directorate of Technical Education, will again serve as Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology. Dr Sivaprasad, a professor in Cochin University's Department of Ship Technology, will continue as Vice-Chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University alongside his regular academic duties. Both will serve for up to six months or until permanent replacements are named, a Rajbhavan release said here. The dispute dates back to November 2024, when the Governor first named the two to the temporary posts, citing provisions in the respective University Acts that allow him to fill vacancies for a short period. The state government challenged the move, saying the appointments bypassed the required process — including government-recommended panels — and did not comply with University Grants Commission rules. Delhi govt to begin process of selecting location for new secretariat: CM Gupta
Agency: New Delhi, Aug 1 (PTI) Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that Delhi government will soon begin the process of identifying a suitable location for constructing a new secretariat to house various departments in one building. She made the announcement after visiting the Women and Child Development Department office at Kashmere Gate. The chief minister flagged the dilapidated condition of the building and hit out at the AAP dispensation over the state of affairs. 'I am coming to this office for the first time. It is saddening to see that our officers work in this kind of a building. The fans can fall off any moment and the roof is leaking," she rued as she inspected the department's office. Attacking the previous AAP government in Delhi, she recalled that there was a fire at this building in 2021 yet no repairs were carried out. 'Theirs was an educated government. They spent crores of rupees on building Sheesh Mahal but did not do anything to improve the condition of government offices," Gupta said. 'Today, looking at the condition of this office, I am saddened. They could have Rs 2-3 crore to improve the condition of this building," the chief minister charged. From today itself, we will begin the process for identifying a location for a new secretariat where all departments can be housed, she added.
