Kuala Lumpur: The Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) Division of the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (JKDNKA) seized various illegal items worth RM3.9 million in two integrated operations in Lahad Datu and Tawau, Sabah, on Thursday and Friday. JKDNKA Director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said in the first operation in Lahad Datu at 7pm, carried out with enforcement officers from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), they raided a store at a palm oil plantation and arrested four men aged between 20 and 31. 'We seized a lorry head with a tanker containing 30,000 litres of crude palm oil, a van, three motorised oil pumps with hoses and tanks, as well as drums filled with crude palm oil. 'The total amount of crude palm oil seized is estimated to weigh 30,148 tonnes, with a market value of RM152,090, and the overall value of the seizure in this operation is estimated at RM645,890,' he said, in a statement, Monday. Azmi said the case is being investigated under Regulation 5(1)(b) of the MPOB (Licensing) Regulations 2005, adding that police also issued five summonses (POL 257) for vehicle-related offences such as expired road tax, no insurance coverage and driving without a licence. 'At the first location in Kampung Apas Parit, two Indonesian men and two Filipino men were arrested, and police seized 470 fighting cocks believed to be from the Philippines, 40 rooster spur knives, 180 units of vitamins and 500 chicken cages. 'At the second location in Kampung Membalua Off Jalan Apas, a 57-year-old man was detained along with 152 fighting cocks, with the total estimated value of the seizures at both locations being RM3,287,708,' he said. Three nabbed in RM4.7mill cockfight raid in Sabah

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have busted a major illegal cockfighting syndicate in Papar, Sabah, arresting three men and seizing nearly 1,000 fighting cocks along with equipment valued at RM4.7 million. The raid took place on July 25 at an unnumbered lot in Kampung Kambizaan, Jalan Kayau Kambizaan. Those arrested include a local Chinese man, an Indonesian, and a Filipino, aged between 38 and 59. "This operation was launched to curb the illegal rearing of fighting cocks from neighbouring countries and to combat gambling activities linked to cockfighting in Sabah," Federal Police Management Department director Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim said in a statement yesterday. The joint raid uncovered 936 live fighting cocks believed to be of Philippine breed, along with 30 iron cages and 107 chicken tagging irons. The raid involved personnel from the Papa district Criminal Investigations Department, the 16th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF), Kota Kinabalu Veterinary Services Department, and the Papar District Council. Azmi said the three suspects were believed to be illegally importing and training fighting cocks for illegal cockfighting events, which often involve high-stakes gambling. Among the seized items were five boxes and two bottles of vitamins, a paper bag containing Terumo syringes, a box of 100 Agani needles, and a plastic bag filled with Terumo U-100 insulin — tools commonly used for animal doping. "The total estimated value of the seizure was RM4,684,825.20," Azmi said. Terumo is a brand known for medical syringes and needles often used in veterinary and human healthcare. The suspects are being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Animal Enactment 2015 for importing animals without a valid licence issued by the Veterinary Department. Azmi urged the public to abide by all laws and report any suspicious activities that may threaten public safety and order. From Jan 1 to July 27 July this year, the Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Intelligence Investigation (WCB/PSK) conducted 179 raids nationwide, resulting in 314 arrests. The offences included smuggling of untaxed goods, misappropriation of controlled and subsidised items, sale of imitation weapons, wildlife trafficking, and e-waste operations. The total estimated value of seizures during this period stands at RM550.95 million.

Russia's night attack on Kyiv leaves eight injured, including child, Ukraine says

KYIV (Reuters) -A Russian overnight air attack on Kyiv wounded eight residents of an apartment building, including a three-year-old child, authorities in the Ukrainian capital said on Monday. Four of those injured in the attack, which took place soon after midnight on Monday, have been hospitalised, with one person in serious condition, the head of Kyiv's military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on the Telegram messaging app. Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that all of the people were residents of a multi-storey apartment building in the city's Darnytskyi district on the left bank of the Dnipro River. "The blast wave damaged windows from the 6th to the 11th floor," Klitschko said in a post on Telegram. The capital and most of Ukraine were under air raid alerts for several hours overnight following Ukrainian Air Force warnings of Russian missile and drone attacks. With the threat of missile strikes on western parts of Ukraine that border Poland - a NATO member - Polish armed forces scrambled aircraft to ensure the safety of Polish airspace. The central Ukrainian city of Kropyvnytskyi came under an attack, regional Governor Andriy Raikovych said, adding that emergency services were working on the site and information about potential damage will be released later on Monday. The full scale of the Russian attack on Ukraine was not immediately known. Reuters' witnesses heard loud blasts shaking the city of Kyiv overnight in what sounded like air defence units in operation. There was no comment from Russia on the attack. Both sides deny targeting civilians in their strikes in the war that Russia started in February 2022. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian. (Writing by Lidia Kelly in Melbourne; Editing by Kim Coghill and Saad Sayeed)
