Taiwanese boy band F4 thrills fans with surprise reunion
The quartet's performance of their ballad Meteor Rain sparked a wave of nostalgia at the Taipei Arena, and sent many among the 40,000 concertgoers singing along.
Meteor Rain was the theme song to the 2001 popular TV drama Meteor Garden, which starred F4's Jerry Yan, Vanness Wu, Vic Chou, and Ken Chu, and catapulted them to stardom.
The series, which was based on the Japanese manga series Boys Over Flowers, captured the hearts of millions across Asia and popularised the "idol drama" genre.
Meteor Garden also starred Barbie Hsu, who died from pneumonia in February.
Its storyline centres around a girl from a working-class family, played by Hsu, who goes to school with four rich and arrogant boys known as the F4, short for Flower 4.
The series' success spawned other Asian adaptations, including Japan's Hana Yori Dango in 2005, South Korea's Boys Over Flowers in 2009, China's Meteor Garden in 2008 and F4 Thailand: Boys Over Flowers in 2021.
The boy band F4, which formed around the same time the Taiwanese series debuted, disbanded in 2009, but came together four years later for a one-off performance during Chinese TV network Jiangsu's Spring Festival Gala.
Mayday's frontman Ashin, whose real name is Chen Hsin-hung, said it took his band years to get all four F4 members together again.
"Everyone overcame a lot of obstacles to make this picture a reality," Ashin said on Saturday.
Mayday, which was formed in 1997, is one of the most popular bands in the Chinese-speaking world - at one point being described as the "Beatles of Asia" by the music press. Their success has also seem them compared to the likes of Coldplay and Maroon 5.
At Saturday's concert, F4 also performed Mayday's The Song of Laughter and Forgetting with the rock group.
F4's Yan thanked Mayday for its "amazing effort" in reuniting his former band mates.
"This is something I could not have imagined would happen again in my lifetime. It's also made us reminisce about our youth," said Yan, now 48.
"I am very grateful to everyone who are here to share a beautiful evening with us," said bandmate Wu, 46.
All four band members are in their 40s and are still active in the entertainment industry.
Fans were ecstatic about the reunion, with many calling for the band to hold their own concert.
"OMG!! Thank you Mayday !! My childhood is alive. It's crazy seeing [F4] perform again," read one comment on X.
"Are you crying already... because we are! Hello to the inner child in you jumping up and down because #F4 just reunited! Tour soon? We hope!" Sound Check Manila, whose account curates music events in the Philippine capital, also wrote on X.
Taiwan's Mirror Media earlier reported that F4 would hold a a concert next year, marking 25 years since their debut. This has not been verified by the artists or their agents.

Cabello just wrapped a successful European leg of her Yours, C tour in Europe, and she will continue the tour with dates in Taiwan, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and Brazil from August through September 14. Cabello's new management deal comes just over a year after she released her fourth solo album, C, XOXO, back in June of 2024. That album was her first at Universal Music's Interscope after she departed from Sony's Epic Records, which had released her three other solo albums. C, XOXO debuted at Number 13 on Billboard's 200 Albums chart, her only album to open outside of the top 10. Cabello remains the most successful solo act from the girl group Fifth Harmony, where she got her start after the group formed on The X Factor back in 2012. She left the group in 2016. Cabello's first two solo albums are both platinum-certified and had the massive hits 'Havana' featuring Young Thug and 'Señorita' with Shawn Mendes, both of which have surpassed at least 2 billion streams on Spotify. As Cabello moves into a new chapter in her career, there could be movement from the rest of her former Fifth Harmony members as well. As THR first reported back in May, the group, minus Cabello, have been in talks to reunite, with a tour and documentary potentially in the works. Indian film board cuts 'Superman 'kissing scenes after deeming them too 'sensual'
If you go to see Superman in India, you won't be seeing the exact same film viewers in other parts of the world boosted to become this past weekend's top global earner. The nation's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has cut two scenes from the flagship DC Universe film, which was directed by James Gunn and stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as the man in tights and his reporter love interest, Lois Lane. Though the CBFC asked for several curse words to be muted or cut from the film, the main cuts which attracted attention depict Corenswet and Brosnahan kissing. The first takes place early in the film, when Clark Kent/Superman leans in for a peck in Lois' kitchen. The second, a memorable, 33-second shot depicts Superman lifting Lois off her feet inside a shopping arcade as they kiss. In both instances, the film cuts away from all or part of the kiss as the characters lean in, picking back up after they've already parted ways, and in both scenes the actors are fully clothed. By way of justifying the cuts, the CBFC characterized each scene as a "sensual visual." Entertainment Weekly has reached out to representatives for CBFC, DC Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Discovery for comment. CBFC records indicate that Superman was granted the proper certificate on July 7, four days before Superman's global release. The film obtained a UA 13+ certificate, meaning it was cleared for unrestricted public exhibition, but parental guidance was advised for viewers under 13 years old - roughly equivalent to an American PG-13 rating. Discovery of the cuts angered some viewers in India, who pointed out seeming discrepancies in discretion. The violent thriller Jaat, for instance, released in India in April, was allowed to keep scenes of beheadings and violent torture, and there were no issues with several gory murder scenes in Haneef Adeni's 2024 neo-noir Marco. But "Superman kissing Lois Lane is where we draw the line," wrote Indian content creator Anmol Jamwal in a Friday X post. Actress Shreya Dhanwanthary deemed the cuts "ridiculous" in her own X post from Friday, adding, "Sure this is the least of our worries but is something done about anything else? There is some crap every day. Every. Damn. Day." The anger over the Superman cuts builds on previous backlash to cuts from F1: The Movie and Thunderbolts*. The CBFC ordered a shot which depicted star Brad Pitt looking at his phone to see an incoming text featuring a middle finger emoji changed to a fist emoji. In the latter case, the CBFC asked for certain swear words to be removed or muted from the theatrical cut of the film. Censorship like this isn't unheard of stateside, it should be said, as streaming giants like Disney+ have been found to have instituted a sweeping round of cuts to films like Toy Story 2 and series like Hannah Montana on its viewers are certainly missing out on Corenswet and Brosnahan's chemistry, however, which the stars showed off in an exclusive recent video for EW that you can view below.
