3 fantastic Bon Odori festivals happening in Tokyo this July 19-21 long weekend
Bon Odori is a lively summer dance held during the Obon period to honour ancestors – a tradition that's been around for over 500 years. People gather around a yagura stage, dancing in circles to the rhythm of the music. It's a festive, feel-good way to spend a summer night – and the perfect chance to show off your best dance moves. Here are three Bon Odori festivals you can join this weekend.
Sendagaya Bon Odori Festival, July 18-19
To kick things off, stop by the Sendagaya Bon Odori Festival taking place at Hato no Mori Hachiman Shrine. You can expect food stalls set up by local businesses, as well as games and activities for children. Plus, of course, the requisite communal dancing.
Not familiar with the moves? No worries. Drop by around 4pm to learn the choreography, and you can join in one of the Bon Odori dances happening at 5.30pm, 7pm and 7.50pm (5.30pm, 6.45pm and 8pm on Saturday).
Daibon, July 19
Get ready to get your groove on at Daibon, a modern rendition of the traditional Bon Odori festival held at Hachiman Shrine in Nakano ward's Yamatocho. Here, the customary Bon Odori festivities are fused with a line-up of DJs and contemporary artists, merging the timeless traditions with the energetic pulse of new-wave beats.
Watch as the festival comes alive with live DJ sets, which have in the past featured eclectic talents like Chinbantei Goraku Shisho, and the invigorating performances of Korean percussionists. Daibon takes the typical Bon Odori experience a step further, creating a fusion of sounds that should strike a chord with revellers of all ages.
Jiyugaoka Noryo Bon Odori Festival, July 19-21
The public square in front of Jiyugaoka Station is hosting a massive Bon Odori festival between July 19 and 21. Expect lively dancing to begin at 6.30pm each night (7pm on July 19) to the tune of Bon Odori classics such as 'Tokyo Ondo', as well as a more modern line-up of music featuring remixes of contemporary J-pop songs such as 'RPG' from Sekai no Owari and 'Takaneno Hanakosan' by Back Number.
New for 2025 is a special kids' dance session beginning at 5.30pm (6.10pm on July 19), making the Noryo Bon Odori a fun and family-friendly night out.

According to this brunette, she swears by Korean beauty - a beauty trend focused on the 'glass skin' look - for flawless skin. Not only this, but she also got candid on the two tips she recommends to defy wrinkles - and luckily for those on a budget, they are totally free. Showing off her 'go to everyday make-up routine' as a busy mum-of-four, Liana added concealer under her eyes, liquid bronzer to her forehead, nose and cheekbones and liquid blusher to her cheeks. Following this, the content creator, who has ditched foundation for good, applied gel to her eyebrows and finished off her natural look with a subtle brush of eyeshadow under her lash line, as well as a touch of Vaseline on her plump pout. But Liana's TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @bananalianas, sent social media users wild and quickly amassed 152,000 views, 15,600 likes and 252 comments in just three days. Viewers couldn't believe their eyes at Liana's age and raced to the comments to express their thoughts. One person said: 'You look like you're around 19-25.' Another added: '39!! I thought you were 22.' A third commented: 'You look mid 20s what.' From banana skins to ear massages - five natural anti-aging hacks revealed At the same time, one woman begged: 'Sis drop the skincare routine.. you look incredible.' Meanwhile, someone else asked: 'Do you use any skincare? Because you don't have wrinkles at all.' I think the game changer for me has been hydration and stopping vaping Liana In response, Liana wrote back and confirmed: 'I do use skincare, I can do a tutorial of what I use. I do have fine lines and wrinkles close up but skincare and hydration has helped minimise the look.' Not only this, but in addition to skincare, Liana also clarified her two free tips for an age-defying complexion, as she added: 'I think the game changer for me has been hydration and stopping vaping.' Biggest skincare trends for 2025 Face The Future's Head of Clinic, Kimberley Medd, shared the five skincare trends predicted to take off in 2025. 1. Exosomes Exosomes are the buzzword for 2025, taking advanced skin regeneration to new heights. These micro-messengers signal skin cells to repair damage, boost collagen, and accelerate recovery, and they're a gamechanger for targeting ageing. 2. Streamlined Skincare The age of 12-step routines is fading as consumers shift to more intentional, multi-functional products. Streamlining skincare not only saves time but also reduces the risk of overloading your skin. In 2025, we'll see a rise in hybrid products that combine active ingredients for simplified, effective results. 3. Vegan Collagen Plant-based collagen will dominate the skincare world this year, providing a sustainable, ethical alternative to traditional animal-derived collagen. Expect vegan collagen in everything from moisturisers to serums. 4. Why social media's viral 'jelly beauty' trend could take years off your beauty look
Beauty fans have been raving about the most recent makeup trend - jelly beauty - and with brands such as e.l.f and Milk launching jelly formula products, we chat to experts about why this has become so popular Social media is great for getting inspiration for beauty and skincare buys, as well as tips and tricks for anti-ageing and how to change your routine to suit your skin. Now the latest 'jelly beauty' trend could help to keep you looking youthful for longer according to experts, due to being packed with skin-loving and hydrating ingredients. Several brands are launching jelly products, including e.l.f cosmetics relaunching the iconic Jelly Pop collection after a long-awaited return, as well as the cult favourite Milk Jelly Blush. It originates from Korean beauty and skincare, which has also had a surge in popularity in recent years, with beauty buffs searching K-Beauty more than ever. The hydrating formulas first gained a cult following, mostly from Gen Z, who took to TikTok to share their reviews. Now become a generational phenomenon, K-Beauty products and jelly formulas are everywhere. Zoe Budd, Founder of ZOBU Aesthetic Concierge and advanced aesthetic Facialist told Daily Mirror Jelly textures are having a moment "for a good reason" and said she layers high-impact jelly-style formulas rich in hyaluronic acid, snail mucin, tremella and peptides to flood skin with water, cushion fine lines and create that mirror-finish glow. "These jelly-texture ingredients not only hydrate deeply but also help firm, smooth and support the skin barrier which makes them brilliant for that soft-focus anti-ageing effect. The payoff is that skin looks plump, calm and luminous both on camera and in real life." e.l.f cosmetics most-requested product, the Jelly Pop Dew Primer (£10) is finally back for a limited time, and the sticky gel primer helps to keep makeup in plce while moisturising skin. Infused with vitamin E plus watermelon extract and a refreshing watermelon scent, it smooths skin's texture. Dr Jessica Halliley, Founder of Your Beauty Doctor noted that jelly-textured beauty products have become an instant hit "thanks to their playful, cooling and water-rich formulas that tap into our craving for dewy, youthful skin". She told Daily Mirror: "These hybrid gel-cream textures are typically infused with plumping ingredients like hyaluronic acid which delivers hydration, while visibly softening the appearance of fine lines." The expert said they're great for a quick 'boost' and from a skincare standpoint the water-based texture coupled with humectants could "help support skin firmness and dewiness". But said the "anti-ageing effect is essentially on a temporary surface level" and advised long-term skin changes would be required for "real regeneration". Milk Makeup Cooling Water Jelly Tint - Lip + Cheek Blush Stain (£22) has earned a cult status among beauty fans, who call it a "must have" for any makeup bag that people say leaves their skin looking healthy. Another viral favourite that has been hailed on TikTok by beauty fans is the fwee Lip & Cheek Blurry Pudding Pot (£16). A tinted balm for the lips and cheeks. The creamy, bouncy pudding-like texture glides on effortlessly. It can work as a matte lip tint or blush and the pigmented formula blurs to leave a subtle finish or can be layered to build colour.

The summer edition of Dine LA is finally back—and here are our favorite deals
Beginning tomorrow, Dine LA is back. Now in its 17th year, L.A.'s biggest restaurant week offers prix-fixe menus starting from $15 per person, though many places now opt to offer menus in the priciest, wide-ranging category: $65 and above. For the next two weeks, Angelenos can score a handful of small discounts at restaurants across the city, including a few of what I consider the city's best restaurants. For those who were going to splurge anyway, you can even score a two-Michelin-star meal at a $75 discount over at Mélisse in Santa Monica. For all of those hunting for an actual bargain, I've found 17 different places across Los Angeles that I'd consider a good deal, in one way or another. My personal favorites include the pair of $25 and $35 meal deals from Koreatown's Soban, home to L.A.'s best soy-marinated crab and one of the best banchan selections in the city. (Any genuine lover of Korean cuisine knows that the complimentary side dishes provided with your meal are one of the best representations of a given restaurant's true culinary capabilities.) Did I mention Soban is also one of the city's best restaurants? Another truly great option is the $65 prix-fixe menu from the Girl & the Goat in the Arts District, which includes five family-style dishes and a matcha tres leches with rhubarb-strawberry sorbet for dessert. While Top Chef alum Stephanie Izard's globally inspired small plates restaurant often gets overlooked with all the other amazing options in the destination restaurant-heavy neighborhood, the Dine LA menu might just remind you why this brick-lined, plant-filled restaurant is a great option to keep in your back pocket for your next night out in greater Downtown L.A. Until Somni reopened last November and upstaged all other restaurants in West Hollywood (it also recently got three Michelin stars!), Ardor was my top dining pick in the city-neighborhood, and it's also participating in Dine LA. The swanky hotel restaurant inside the West Hollywood EDITION offers a vegetable-forward menu within its cinematic dining room and verdant outdoor patio. The $65 prix-fixe menu nets you the eatery's signature tomato-topped milk bread, plus your choice of Spanish octopus or tandoor carrots as an appetizer. For mains, choose between skirt steak, king crab tagliatelle or Ardor's standout sweet potato curry. While I've yet to personally try the chocolate espresso torte on Ardor's Dine LA menu, I've loved every dessert I've tried at the restaurant, so it's likely a safe bet as well. Finally, I'd like to recommend bookmarking two restaurants that have yet to release their Dine LA menus: Mr. T in Hollywood and Sushi Kisen in Arcadia. Both restaurants will be offering menus in the $65 and over category. Mr. T offers République alum Alisa Vannah's rendition of modern Parisian cuisine. Co-owned by music mogul Jay-Z (whose offices are located upstairs), it's one of the best French restaurants in the city, with a gorgeous patio full of string lights and a fire pit. As for Sushi Kisen, the San Gabriel Valley sushi restaurant is one of my favorite places for sushi in L.A. County. Even on a regular day, the omakase at the counter is a relative bargain. Despite the fact it takes over an hour for me to drive there in normal traffic, I spent my birthday weekend shlepping to Arcadia for the restaurant's second anniversary kaisendon, which came topped with blue crab, ikura, sea urchin and shrimp. The set also came with a side of marinated sashimi. While Sushi Kisen has yet to publish its Dine LA menu, you can rest assured that whatever they're offering will be a steal in terms of fish quality and overall value. While it's true that the vast majority of Dine LA prix-fixe menus aren't really deals anymore, these handful of options will be more than enough to keep you happy during the summer edition. Bon appétit!
