'Eddie wanted me': Brendan Fevola blocked from joining McGuire at Collingwood
Carlton legend Brendan Fevola has revealed he was approached about a potential switch to both Collingwood and St Kilda at the end of his career, but the Blues wouldn't deal with the Magpies back in 2009. The two-time Coleman medallist is a Carlton great having kicked 575 goals for the club across 187 games. The three-time All-Australian also spent one year at the Brisbane Lions having joined them for his final year of AFL footy in 2010. However, Fevola has revealed the Lions were not the only club in pursuit of his signature when he was on the way out of Carlton. Speaking on The Fox's 'Fifi, Fev & Nick' on Melbourne's 101.9, Fevola revealed St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt reached out to him and sold the club as a potential destination for the 2010 season. However, discussions of an enormous pay-cut promptly ended negotiations with the Saints. 'Yeah, they couldn't afford me though. This is dead-set. I was going to go to St Kilda," Fevola said on Friday. "Nick Riewoldt rang me and said, 'Come to the Saints, we need you to win a flag, but you need to take a $700,000 pay-cut.' I said, 'See ya, mate' and hung up." Eddie McGuire wanted Brendan Fevola at Collingwood Then Collingwood came knocking. Fevola claimed Collingwood president Eddie McGuire was interested in bringing the forward over to join a strong squad. Although the Blues were not interested in dealing with their cross-town rivals and snubbed the trade before it went any further. 'I nearly went to Collingwood, but Carlton wouldn't trade with Collingwood," Fevlola said. "Eddie wanted me to go to Collingwood. I chose Brisbane, we finished near the bottom, and St Kilda and Collingwood played in the grand final that year." Collingwood won the 2010 premiership, but it wasn't without drama after initially drawing with St Kilda 68-68. The two sides played again in a replay, with Collingwood emerging with a 56-point win. That year the Lions finished 13th with just seven wins. Although Fevola did contribute 48 goals across his 17 games in 2010. Brendan Fevola's AFLW coaching role Since hanging up his boots, Fevola has fallen back in love with AFL after taking up a surprise role at the beginning of 2025. Fevola recently joined the Richmond AFLW team as a specialist coach. The 44-year-old has coaching experience at a local level having worked with a number of teams since his retirement in 2010. He also worked with Collingwood's AFLW program last year, which got him excited about working in footy again. Fevola said his new role came about after meeting with Tigers AFLW football operations manager Kate Sheahan who offered him a role to work with the forwards. And the Carlton legend said he jumped at the opportunity. 'Over the summer, I caught up with Kate Sheahan. She was picking my brain about footy and (whether I would) like to pursue a coaching career," Fevola announced earlier this year. "She saw what I did with Collingwood. I loved it. It really, really fired up the fire that had been put out in my body once I finished the AFL. 'And now… I am a specialist coach at AFLW team, the Richmond Football Club. I am now a coach." Severino and Urias power Athletics to a 5-2 win over the AL West-leading Astros
HOUSTON (AP) — Luis Severino struck out eight in seven innings and Luis Urias homered to lead the Athletics to a 5-2 victory over the AL West-leading Houston Astros on Thursday night. Severino (4-11) allowed four hits and two earned runs as the A's snapped a four-game skid. Mason Miller earned his 20th save. Urias hit his eighth homer in the sixth inning and finished with two hits. Nick Kurtz went 3 for 5 with an RBI double in the two-run fourth inning.
