A look back on Jack Black's wild Ozzy Osbourne tribute at 2024 Rock & Rock Hall of Fame induction: ‘The Jack Nicholson of rock'

New York Post3 days ago
No more tears when there's a moment like this to remember.
Jack Black gave Ozzy Osbourne a raucous Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction in October, just nine months before the legendary heavy metal rocker's death at age 76 on Tuesday.
Osbourne said he was looking forward to Black's speech inducting him into the avowed institution as a solo artist, nearly 20 years after he was part of its Class of 2006 with his Black Sabbath bandmates, telling Rolling Stone he was 'always a big fan' of the actor.

'Jack invited my family to the 'School of Rock' movie premiere in 2002,' Osbourne reflected. 'I've always been a big fan of his. Jack is one of the few great actors that is also a genuine rock & roller and not acting the part.'

And during last fall's highly anticipated moment, Black, 55, did not disappoint.

'Plumber, car horn tuner, slaughterhouse worker, the greatest frontman in the history of rock 'n' roll. Ozzy Osbourne.
'I remember the first time I heard of Ozzy. I was 13 years old, wandering around the record store. What should I get? Sticks? Journey? An older rock aficionado noticed my indecision, and he said, 'Stop f–king around, kid. This is the album you need to get, 'The Blizzard of Ozz.' Man, was he right! Thank you, nameless rock aficionado, wherever you are, you changed my life. I remember looking at that album cover at Ozzy's face before I even heard the music. I was transfixed. He looked so cool, that red-white suit with the white fringe on the sleeves, that crazy look in his eyes, the skull, the cross — Holy s–t. The whole thing just looked so badass. It was the most metal thing I'd ever seen, and I didn't even know what metal was. He was teaching me. I didn't realize I was entering a whole new world of heavy metal music.

'I took that record home, and when the needle hit, the vinyl heaven opened up above me, I don't know. Then track two, 'Crazy Train.' There was an explosion of colors in my brain. 'Suicide Solution.' 'Mr. Crowley,' 'Revelation,' even 'Goodbye to Romance.' You best believe Ozzy could take it down a notch. He could do it all. 'Blizzard of Ozz' was the best thing I'd ever heard. A heavy metal masterpiece. That f–king sound was raw power. Randy f–king Rhodes, yeah, giving Eddie Van Halen a run for his money. And Ozzy, that voice, it could cut through a glass. Magic, joy, beauty.
'So then I went back into Ozzy's earlier albums, to Black Sabbath, and I was, like, unholy s–t. This motherf–ker invented heavy metal, along with Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and the immortal Tony Iommi, the darkest, heaviest s–t the world had ever heard. And through all that power, Ozzy's voice carving through the sonic blast furnace like an air raid siren, he made the hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. Clear and crisp as a morning bell, and that smile, he looked so happy, he looked insane. So much charisma, the Jack Nicholson of rock.

'He invented a genre, had the greatest second-act comeback in rock history. Then what? How about 'No More Tears' in 1991 with the guitar god Zakk Wylde proving insane, lasting power, five times platinum. You heard me right! Quintuple platt. It was then that he decided to totally touch his tender side. So he called up Lemmy Kilmister from Motorhead, naturally, and together with Zakk, they wrote, 'Mama, I'm Coming Home.' And thus, Ozzy took a little dip into the Top 40 just to prove he could. Then what? The Osbornes? Yeah, he teamed up with his family to create another genre, reality TV, maybe the most evil thing he ever did. But there is no denying it, his whole family were f–king hilarious and intensely entertaining. Another f–king massive bit. Then what? Oh, maybe just a little thing called Ozzfest, only the most successful heavy metal music festival of all time. Ozzy, stop creating incredibly successful, genre-defining, world-changing hits. It's too much success for one lifetime.
'And you know, a lot has been made of his evil alliance with the Dark Lord Satan. But in truth, Ozzy is a loving father, and husband, and friend, loyal to his family and friends to the end of the world and back.

'And now I stand here, just another nameless rock aficionado. And I'm talking to you, 13-year-olds watching the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. All five of you put down your phones unless you're watching on the phone, then put it closer to your face. Oh, man, rock aficionado is about to drop some truth. Sure, you could go stream Post Malone and Taylor Swift and get all the warm hugs you need for your broken hearts, or you can stay up all night and get your minds blown by Ozzy's entire catalog for the first time.
'Holy s–t, you kids are so f–king lucky.'

Kylie Jenner Took Summer's Polka Dot Nail Trend to the Next Level

Getty Images Leave it to Kylie Jenner to take summer's polka dot nail art trend to a whole 'nother level. The reality star and Kylie Cosmetics founder, known for her glamorous approach to all things hair, makeup, and style, combined the classic dotted style with two more nail trends for something that feels 100 percent Kylie. Jenner has been enjoying a European vacation with friends and her children, Stormi and Aire (did you catch her adorable GWRM video with Stormi?), and, well, you can't enjoy the summer sunshine without a manicure to match! Jenner worked with London-based manicurist Michelle Humphrey on her latest set, and Humphrey didn't just decorate Jenner's nails with medium-sized polka dots atop a sheer base—she mixed them up with a white-tipped French manicure and gave the dots a shiny finish for a little extra pizzazz. Jenner's nails were filed into a long oval shape and painted with a sheer base, like the one you'd typically get with a French manicure. Humphrey then added the signature white tips of a French, but she and Jenner didn't stop there! Instead of regular polish dots, the two went for something with a bit more sparkle factor: chrome-finish metallic dots scattered all over the nail, including atop the white tips! Jenner wrote that she was 'obsessed' with the set and I am too. It manages to be both subtle and glam at the same time, so you could easily wear it to work or for a wedding or summer party and it would fit right in. The Kylie Cosmetics founder has been back into nail art this year, including with a snakeskin-printed set that would have been right at home on King Kylie Tumblr and the sweetest studded pastel French manicure. TBH, I often reference her tiny bug-themed manicure from last summer, which was so adorable and so out of character. (Those lime-green tips!) What's next for Jenner and her nail art? You know I'm paying attention. More fun celebrity manis: Megan Thee Stallion's Nails Are the Equivalent of Christian Louboutin Stilettos You Could Play "I Spy" with J. You Could Play "I Spy" with J. Lo's Glittery 3D Nails

Getty Images As the parent of a four-year-old, I play a lot of 'I Spy"—in the car, at restaurants, poring over the iconic I Spy book series. You know what would fit right in in the pages of those books? Jennifer Lopez's latest manicure! Lopez's concert nails, designed by her go-to manicurist Tom Bachik, are a visual feast with so many blink-and-you'll-miss-them references, they needed their own Instagram grid post. If you were watching her from the arena floor, you probably wouldn't get to see all the details, which is why we're so thankful Bachik posted a close-up at his work so we could pore over every intricately designed nail. The long, coffin-shaped nails were a mix of burgundy, milky pale pink, and gold tones, embellished with sparkling charms, gemstones, and pearls for a royal vibe. Lopez is currently traveling through Europe on her 'Up All Night' tour, which kicked off in Spain. However, the singer-actor-dancer brought a little bit of home to the stage with one of her nails, which featured the New York Yankees logo in gold and rhinestones; more gemstones danged from the 'Y," ending in a large garnet stone. There were bows, crosses, sacred hearts, and even what appears to be the Chanel interlocking 'C' logo, framed by dangling small pearls. See what I mean about 'I Spy?' I spy, with my little eye… Though Lopez typically wears a much more neutral manicure for her day-to-day life and red carpet events, she likes to go all out with her performance nail art. For a trip to Dubai, she and Bachik whipped up a Swarovski crystal butterfly manicure that we're still thinking about. When she performed at an Elie Saab show in late 2024, her nails were encrusted with even more Swarovski crystals for the definition of superstar sparkle. Lopez has a full touring schedule through mid-August; the 'Up All Night' tour takes her through Italy, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, and more. We've got a feeling Bachik is already busy whipping up many more ornate manicures for us to ogle. Can't wait! Megan Thee Stallion's Nails Are the Manicure Equivalent of Christian Louboutin Stilettos

Getty Images Designer-inspired nails are clearly having a moment, with both SZA and Cardi B working label logos—Gucci and Chanel, respectively—into their manicures recently. But you don't have to broadcast blatant letters across your fingertips in order to give a knowing nod to your favorite fashion house. Just look at Megan Thee Stallion's latest nail look. Megan attended the rapper's inaugural Pete & Thomas Foundation Gala in New York City on Wednesday, July 16, hand-in-hand with Dallas Mavericks player and officially hard-launched boyfriend, Klay Thompson. Thompson was pretty brave for weaving his fingers with Meg's, considering how long and sharp her stiletto manicure is. And you know what designer is closely associated with stilettos? Christian Louboutin, of course. But that's not even the main reason we're calling this mani so Louboutin-coded. While the top of Megan's nails were painted with a gunmetal-gray chrome polish, it's what's going on underneath that makes the manicure such a tribute to the shoe legend: a couple coats of bright red, just like the famous crimson soles of a Christian Louboutin pump. Just as sleek as her manicure was Megan's hair, tightly pulled back with the exception of a tendril, and her makeup, which was topped off with dramatically winged liner. She wore a gorgeous, black, criss-cross halter-neck gown by Off-White with a stunning, super-thick beaded belt that echoed the gray and red in her manicure. Thanks to the length of her dress, it's unclear whether or not Meg's open-toed heels were Louboutins, but her manicure is definitely serving plenty of high-fashion footwear vibes regardless.
