Fishing clinics to be held at Oakhurst Forest Preserve in Aurora
The fishing clinics will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 10; Tuesday, Aug. 5; and Wednesday, Sept. 3.
Instructors will teach participants basic angling skills including casting, knot-tying and fish identification, while demonstrating ethical angling practices, according to a press release from the Kane County Forest Preserve District.
Participants can bring their own fishing equipment or borrow tackle and rods while supplies last, according to the release.
Illinois fishing regulations and site-specific rules will apply, organizers said.

The Edith Farnsworth House at 14520 River Road in Plano will hold a summer event called Live Beats and Breezy Bites on Saturday, July 26.
The event will feature an afternoon of live jazz, culinary offerings and art in nature, organizers said.
There will be a performance by guitarist Hans Luchs, an Aurora native now based in New York City, alongside a jazz quartet. Guests can enjoy tacos and beverages from local vendor Two Partners Cafe, as well as have access to the Edith Farnsworth House itself and also Movement: Water Into Wood – The Art of Truman Lowe exhibition before the concert.
Check-in for the event will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., with the jazz concert at 4 p.m.
Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and picnic blankets to the event.

The Waterman Lions Club will hold its 25th anniversary Summerfest and Antique Tractor and Truck Show on Saturday, July 19, at Waterman Lions Park on South Birch Street in Waterman.
The event will begin at 7:30 a.m. with a breakfast hosted by Shabbona Community Church and then during the day feature kids shows and activities, live musical performances, food, a beer garden, craft and flea markets, antique farm exhibits, a tractor pull and ending with a fireworks display at 9:15 p.m.

WAR will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its multiplatinum album, 'Why Can't We Be Friends,' from 8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at Naper Settlement, 523 S. Webster St. in Naperville.
Tickets are $40 for adults and $15 for children ages 4 to 12.
WAR's hits include 'Why Can't We Be Friends,' 'Low Rider,' and 'The Cisco Kid.'
Chairs are not provided so guests should bring lawn chairs or blankets.
School of Rock takes the stage first at 5 p.m. followed by Rico!, a Santana tribute band that will perform from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

The Pathway to Adventure Council, Scouting America, will hold a fundraiser this fall at the White Eagle Golf Club, 3400 Club Drive, in Naperville.
Online registration is now available for the nonprofit's annual Golf Classic to be held Monday, Oct. 6.
The event starts at 9 a.m. with breakfast and time at the driving range. Golfing begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start in a scramble format, organizers said. Food, drinks and a raffle will culminate the event.
Proceeds support Scout programs that serve more than 13,600 children in kindergarten through high school across the Chicago and northwest Indiana regions, organizers said.
The Golf Classic is open to golfers of all skill levels, organizers said. Sponsorships are available.

A Harrowing Tale of War, Told in One Long, Urgent Sentence
ANGEL DOWN, by Daniel Kraus And so here is 'Angel Down,' Daniel Kraus's thunderous gallop of a war novel, which begins midsentence, and mid-battle, as our hero arises inexplicably from a certain-death experience, and lies marveling at his luck, and thinks of a beautiful prostitute named Marie-Louise, and is 'distracted by the corpses packed slick hot on all sides of him,' and provides in all ways a perfect example of what the literary theorist Stanley Fish calls the additive style, in which the writer's prose is associative and spontaneous, piling up new facts and ideas without necessarily spelling out their relationships. The additive style — as distinct from the precise and ordered subordinating style — suggests that the relationship between events, their quote-unquote 'meaning,' is as uncertain in stories as it is in life. And where, I ask you, is meaning more uncertain than on a battlefield? 'Angel Down' is, among many things, a new classic of the additive style. Not only does it begin mid-thought — 'and Cyril Bagger considers himself lucky, he ought to be topped off' — but the whole thing is a single long sentence, rambling and ducking and shifting for 285 dizzying, blood-soaked, astonishing pages. I called 'Angel Down' a 'war novel' earlier, but it is as much about the vagaries of combat as 'Moby-Dick' is a fishing manual. Yes, it is set during the Meuse-Argonne offensive of World War I, but rather than a dry history or maudlin tale of brothers in arms, it is a stylistically delightful literary novel and a best-in-class example of speculative fiction. That speculative element is teased right there in the title: One of God's best and brightest has been knocked from heaven by war's tumult and is caught in a thatch of barbed wire. She's rescued by a detachment of American doughboys, led by the aforementioned Pvt. Cyril Bagger, an utterly cynical Midwestern con man and failed draft dodger. Bagger spends the rest of the story delivering the angel to safety, guarding her against the dangers of No Man's Land and from the predations of his fellow soldiers. Joe Hendry passes the torch to Mike Santana in TNA
TNA has two huge fan favorites at the top of the company with eyes on winning the world title from Trick Williams. That case wasn't settled at Slammiversary when Joe Hendry and Mike Santana both came up short in defeat. But, that was a three-way dance. Perhaps the singular focus of one-on-one could produce a different outcome. That still means TNA needs to decide on who will be that man. It looks like Hendry and Santana settled that issue on Impact (July 24, 2025). Hendry wrestled Santana in the television main event on Thursday night. TNA didn't do any hype promos. The matchup sold itself. Hendry opened with a handshake. The crowd was split with three-syllable chants of, 'Mike Santana,' and, 'We believe.' Santana accepted the gesture of respect. Match on! Tensions increased the longer the action spanned. Hendry went on a run for a fallaway slam, an Olympic slam, a pop-up powerbomb, and an Attitude Adjustment. Hendry could never hit the Standing Ovation finisher. Santana was able to escape Hendry's grip. Santana went on a run of his own for a rolling cutter and a frog splash. The finish came down to counter wrestling with a flurry of roll-ups back and forth. Santana gained the edge for a jackknife pin to win. After the match, it looked like Hendry passed the torch to Santana to be the man to save TNA from Trick Williams. The question is now when Santana will get another crack at the TNA World Championship. The answer would seem to be Bound For Glory on October 12, however, that leaves a lot of time in the way. The two special events prior to that PPV are Emergence on August 15 and Victory Road on September 26. Time will tell how Santana's story shakes out.
