Forensics for Justice wants suspension of cops accused of corruption
Khumalo appeared in the Pretoria regional court on Friday alongside crime intelligence CFO Philani Lushaba, crime intelligence technical support system manager Brig Dineo Mokwele, Maj-Gen Josias Lekalakala, Gauteng head: crime intelligence; Maj-Gen Nosipho Precious Madondo, head of the analysis centre; Maj-Gen Zwelithini Gabela, SAPS technology services; and Brig Phindile Ncube, head of the vetting office.
All except Lushaba were released on bail.
In a letter addressed to Masemola dated July 1, the law firm representing Forensic For Justice, Darryl Furman & Associates, said after the officers' arrest on June 26, its founder Paul O'Sullivan wrote to Masemola giving him until June 30 to suspend the accused officers.
'Our client is of the opinion that Crime Intelligence has ceased to be an effective tool in the fight against serious crime in South Africa, because in his view the facts support that for at least 20 years it is being led by criminals.'
Forensics for Justice said if the officials were not suspended from their duties, they have the opportunity to not only cover their tracks, but to also continue to commit further crime.
'The public has the right to know what you, as the accounting officer of the South African Police Service, are doing about the accused persons. The public have a right to hear that they have been suspended, or are being suspended,' the letter read.
The law firm said its instructions were to advise Masemola that unless it received his response by the end of business on Wednesday to the effect that the accused were to be suspended pending disciplinary action, Forensics for Justice will assume that Masemola will not suspend the accused.
'In such an event, our instructions are to prepare and launch an urgent application in the high court to obtain an order that the accused persons be suspended, in the interests of the public. If a decision has already been made or is in the process of being made, please advise us accordingly to avoid unnecessary and expensive litigation.'

DNA links child serial rapist across provinces, results in three life sentences
A serial child rapist who asked for three life sentences to run concurrently was turned down to ensure he would not be eligible for parole after 25 years. The Madadeni regional court in KwaZulu-Natal sentenced Elphius Elias Shabangu, 38, to life imprisonment for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in June 2024 near the Theku Plaza in Madadeni. According to evidence led during the trial, Shabangu who didn't know the girl, approached her and her siblings on June 28 while they were selling sugar cane near the roadside. The children were visiting their aunt in Madadeni. KwaZulu-Natal National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said he sent the siblings to a nearby shop, leaving him alone with the complainant. He then ordered her to go with him to a nearby vacant house where he raped her twice. Shabangu then fled the scene, leaving the complainant alone. When her siblings returned to their original spot they found their sister missing and reported this to their family. The girl was eventually assisted back to her aunt's home by someone from the community. She told her aunt what happened and her aunt saw her thighs were covered in blood. They reported the case to the police and the child was taken to the Madadeni Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC). The doctor at the TCC noted severe injuries on both her private parts and DNA evidence retrieved from the girl was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for analysis and comparison. Ramkisson-Kara said as Shabangu was unknown to the girl, he managed to evade justice. 'However, Shabangu was arrested a few months later in Mpumalanga in connection with the rape of two minor children, and his DNA linked him to the case in Madadeni. He was subsequently charged. He pleaded guilty to all three counts of rape. 'In Mpumalanga, he was sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment. In the Madadeni regional court, prosecutor Khethiwe Kunene led the testimony of the complainant's aunt, who told the court that the complainant has changed drastically since the incident. She has become withdrawn and fearful. The court sentenced Shabangu to life imprisonment, and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Also, the court ordered that his name be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.' Through his attorney, Shabangu made an application for the Madadeni life sentence to run concurrently with the life sentences in Mpumalanga. 'However, the presiding officer refused the application, citing this would enable Shabangu to be eligible for parole after 25 years. The court mentioned Shabangu is not deserving of this opportunity, considering his cruel and inhumane actions towards young innocent children. This sentence will thus run consecutively to the Mpumalanga sentence.' She said the imposition of the life sentence and the court's refusal of Shabangu's application underscored the gravity of the crimes committed. 'Sexual offences will not be tolerated in our society and will be met with the full force of the law. Five dead including 2 policemen after taxi plunges down 50m embankment
Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics said responders made their way down the embankment to the taxi and found five people had sustained major injuries and were declared dead at the scene. He said they set up a triage station and treated 13 other passengers who sustained various injuries ranging from moderate to critical. In the interim rescue teams made up of Durban Metro Police search and rescue, Ethekweni fire department and Mobiclaw members set up a roping system to bring the injured up to awaiting ambulances. 'After three hours all of the injured were rescued and transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required. The scene then turned into a recovery operation.' Duma said the accident happened shortly after the launch of the Durban July and Winter Holiday Road Safety Campaign. 'I have mandated the RTI team to sustain the 'No Nonsense, Zero Tolerance, and Alufakwa Campaign. We remain worried about reports that show that most road accidents happen in winter and at night.'
