Nectar Social buzzes out of stealth with $10.6 million backing from GV and True Ventures

Going viral isn't luck.
'A book that I'll write one day is going to be called 'Manufacturing Virality,'' said Misbah Uraizee. 'It absolutely is manufacturable, and there's a playbook.'
That playbook includes selective engagement, showing up in search, and partnerships with micro-influencers—not celebrities. It means seeding content, hosting real-life events, and using tools like polls and DMs to spark interaction. The goal: Build a community that talks, tags, and buys. Because even if virality can be engineered, it still has to come from somewhere real.
'For all of our customers, organic communities are the hardest,' said Uraizee. 'You've got paid metrics, you can buy more reach, you're able to scale at a certain length. But your organic traction—your organic community and how you show up there—is really the most authentic representation of your brand, and how viral or how much traction it has.'
Misbah and her sister Farah Uraizee, both former Meta leaders—Misbah in product, Farah in engineering—left in 2023 to cofound Nectar Social, an agentic AI social commerce startup. Translation: The startup is looking to channel the social activity jungle into quantifiable revenue for brands.
'We saw how much private messaging was blowing up, and how terrible the internal elements were for brands to process and scale to that,' said Farah. 'Then, right at the cusp of [OpenAI's GPT] 3.5 launching, we were like: This is the moment. This is where you can start solving these problems in an authentic way. And that made us immediately jump on it.'
Now, about two years after the Uraizees walked away from Meta, Nectar Social is launching out of stealth. The company has raised $10.6 million in combined pre-seed and seed funding, led by GV and True Ventures. BAM Ventures, Charge Ventures, FAB Ventures, Flying Fish Ventures, Mercury Fund, Trust Fund by Sophia Amoruso, and XRC Ventures participated in the round. Nectar's customers include Bobbi Brown's Jones Road Beauty, soda brand Olipop, viral California makeup brand Tower28, and skincare device brand Solawave. (On Instagram alone, this group has a combined more than 1.8 million followers.) GV's bet is that Nectar will become essential to brands looking to compete in the crowded e-commerce space, post-DTC boom.
'Brands are inundated by DMs and comments,' said Frédérique Dame, general partner at GV. 'And they need to convert the customer right away on the spot. When the customer asks a question about the product, they're ready to buy. And Nectar is shrinking the actual funnel to instant purchase.'
Nectar's tools include AI 'social copilot' agents that autonomously handle community interactions, real-time data, and revenue attribution metrics that tie DMs, mentions, and comments to purchases. (Nectar said that it's already managed more than 500,000 DMs, comments, and mentions, while reducing customers' average response times to about five minutes for inbound social media queries.) And yes, there's absolutely a Gen Z angle here—Salesforce data suggests that 76% of Gen Z is finding products through social media.
'Social is becoming the go-to place for people to discover a brand, build a record with a brand, interact and close the loop on the brand,' said GV's Dame. 'But the magic of this is that it goes from inside out. They can extend it to your email ecosystem.'
Misbah and Farah are five years apart, and though their early years took them from Singapore to Sweden to Ireland, much of their childhood was spent in Northern California, where their parents worked in the telecom industry. Nadeem and Amtul Uraizee, their parents, told Fortune via email that they weren't surprised the sisters decided to start a company together. One thing they emphasized: Misbah and Farah have always had a habit of disagreeing—thoughtfully. As kids, they would debate vigorously across family road trips.
'But the moment one of them ever hit any rough patches, the other would drop everything to help,' Nadeem and Amtul wrote to Fortune. 'That's just who they've always been: each other's biggest critics and biggest champions. Now, seeing them run a company together, it honestly feels like the same relationship playing out on a bigger stage. They still disagree (probably more than ever), but they've learned how to turn those disagreements into something meaningful that they can build together.'
And what they're trying to build together is a ubiquitous but invisible engine for, essentially, going viral. Conceptually, going viral is interesting for its odd combination of science and mystery. There are, as Misbah points out, ways to build virality. But when something goes viral, it's ultimately because people care genuinely in some way. Which isn't a one-way street—a brand on social media has to consistently show (at scale) that it cares about its customers.
'The best brands are hyperactive,' said Farah. 'They respond to every single person, and they don't only respond—they proactively encourage it.'

In the late 1990s, Paula Deen was an independent restaurateur whose family-operated restaurant had just received a glowing review from USA Today. Her life and career were permanently changed. Now, over 25 years later, the Georgia native has announced the closing of the Lady and Sons — the iconic restaurant that made her a star of Southern cuisine and a household name in the cooking world. Opened in downtown Savannah, Ga., in 1996, the Lady and Sons boasted a menu of local classics like fried green tomatoes, banana pudding and hoecakes. The signature dish, Southern fried chicken, was enough to draw lines wrapping around the block — and the restaurant came to be viewed as an embodiment of the indulgent and buttery flavors that characterize Southern cooking. 'There in Savannah, Paula Deen's homestyle Southern menu at the Lady and Sons turned me into a ravenous beast, unmindful of manners, cholesterol, North-South diplomacy and the dropped jaws of my companions,' USA Today, then the nation's most-read daily newspaper, wrote on Dec. 17, 1999. Earlier that year, the popularity of the Lady and Sons caught the attention of Food Network journalist Gordon Elliott. Deen appeared on Elliott's short-lived show 'Door Knock Dinners' that led to her own Daytime Emmy-winning Food Network program, 'Paula's Home Cooking.' On her website and social media accounts, Deen bid farewell to the Lady and Sons and its longtime fans. Also closing is her newer restaurant, the Chicken Box, which opened in 2023. 'Hey, y'all, my sons and I made the heartfelt decision that Thursday, July 31st, was the last day of service for The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box,' Deen said in the statement. 'We will now focus our attention on the four Paula Deen's Family Kitchen locations across the country.' The announcement came without warning, especially as the restaurant continued to draw tours and lines of customers. Three weeks prior to the announcement, the Lady and Sons posted on Instagram that it was hiring for all positions. Over the years, some of Deen's other restaurants have also closed suddenly. In 2014, employees at Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House — a Savannah eatery she co-owned with her brother, Earl W. 'Bubba' Hiers Jr. — reportedly arrived to work to find the doors locked and the appliances removed. A sign on the door said, 'Thank you for 10 great years. Uncle Bubba's is now closed.' The Panama City, Fla., location of Paula Deen's Family Kitchen also closed abruptly in 2019, laying off 30 employees without advance notice. Several former employees told local news channel WJHG that they were left without their main source of income following the closure. Uncle Bubba's closure came a year after controversy began to surround Deen after a former manager at the restaurant sued Hiers, alleging sexual and racial discrimination. Food Network canceled 'Paula's Home Cooking' after Deen admitted to using a racial slur during a deposition for the 2013 lawsuit. Lawyers asked Deen if she had ever used the N-word, to which Deen replied, 'Yes, of course,' later adding, 'It's been a very long time.' Since then, the 78-year-old has focused on her restaurants. The Lady and Sons, as her core establishment, was the result of a litany of personal struggles and ambition. Both of her parents passed away when she was in her early 20s and Deen, then a young mother, struggled with depression and agoraphobia, or fear of going outside. With only $200 left, Deen founded a catering company out of her kitchen called the Bag Lady. Her handmade bag lunches were delivered by her sons Jamie and Bobby and earned Deen a local reputation for her homestyle cooking. After one attempt at a restaurant, the Lady in 1991, the follow-up, the Lady and Sons, co-owned with Jamie and Bobby, would be her success.

Instead, the stock seemed to benefit from a wave of bullish sentiment for artificial intelligence (AI) and digital advertising stocks after strong reports from both Meta Platforms and Microsoft last night. As a result, AppLovin stock was up 8.2% as of 12:53 p.m. ET, while those two big tech stocks gained as well. AppLovin rides Meta's coattails Strong results from Meta in particular seemed to benefit AppLovin, as Meta's report showed off healthy demand in the digital advertising market. Revenue jumped 22% to $47.5 billion, and advertising made up 98% of its revenue, showing strong demand for ads on Facebook and Instagram. Meta credited AI improvements for driving both growth in ad impressions and an increase in the price per ad, reflecting increased demand and ROI. That trend, along with Microsoft's strong quarterly numbers, set off a wave of bullishness for stocks like AppLovin, which is high-priced and high-growth and offers exposure to both adtech and AI. In fact, AppLovin may be ahead of the curve in AI-driven advertising, as its AI-powered recommendation engine, Axon, has been a key source of growth for the company recently. What's next for AppLovin? As an expensive, high-growth stock, AppLovin tends to be volatile, and today's gains reflect an improved perception of its future growth ahead of its own earnings report on Aug. 6. Investors are expecting 13% revenue growth to $1.22 billion in the quarter, though that includes the sale of its mobile apps business. Excluding that, organic growth will be much stronger.
