Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor in his speech at the event called on media practitioners to carry out their duties with full integrity, guided by principles of professional and responsible journalism.
He said the success and communication of government policies also depend greatly on the vital role of the media in delivering information clearly and effectively to the people.
In the context of the state's development, he said the government remains committed to implementing various initiatives that benefit the people and accelerate Sabah's progress through the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan.
'As a partner that maintains close cooperation and strong ties with the government, the media also plays a key role in disseminating information related to the state government's development policies, particularly under the Sabah Maju Jaya Development Plan.
'Therefore, I hope this strategic cooperation will continue to be strengthened and our good relationship will be further enhanced to help the government spread important information to the people about the state's development agenda and direction.
'Media reports also help the government understand what is happening at the grassroots level and the concerns of the people. Certainly, the government always welcomes such reports and coverage from media practitioners acting as a bridge between the government and the people,' he said.
The Chief Minister's speech was delivered by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
Hajiji also expressed hope that the media will always play its important role as a trusted provider of information, a source of authentic news, and a platform for the public to access information quickly and accurately.
He said the Kinabalu Press Awards, organised by the Sabah Journalists Association in collaboration with the state government and other sponsors, aim to recognise and appreciate the commitment and capabilities of media practitioners in the state.
'This event also serves as an excellent platform to motivate media practitioners to be more driven, focused and responsible in carrying out their duties with greater transparency and ethics,' he said.
In this regard, he added that the government has never neglected the crucial role of the media in society and continues to support programmes such as the KPA through financial sponsorships.
'The state government greatly values and understands this need, and sponsorship assistance has even increased every year.
'I also congratulate all the winners — keep up the excellent work and let this achievement be a catalyst for continuing to contribute to the state's development and the well-being of the people through credible and ethical news reporting,' he said.

Gas tank ruling not for hawkers
Revised roll-out: Armizan (centre) chairing a meeting with the Sabah Food Traders Association at the Sabah International Convention Centre. — Bernama KOTA KINABALU: Small traders selling food and beverages need not worry – they can continue to use subsidised LPG cylinders – as long as they offer 'rakyat prices'. They will be exempted for the requirement to use commercial cylinders, which cost almost three times as much, under amendments to the Supply Control Regulations (Amendment) 2021 (PPKB (Amendment) 2021). In May, the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry launched Ops Gasak, which required businesses, including eateries and hawker stalls, to use the more expensive, purple-coloured 14kg commercial LPG cylinders. Those using more than 42kg of LPG at any time needed a special permit. However, minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali told Bernama yesterday that food and beverage vendors who offer services at reasonable prices will continue to be guaranteed access to LPG subsidies. 'Unlike the 2021 ruling which only allowed the use of subsidised LPG cylinders not exceeding 42kg at any given time, the amendment will take into account the needs of micro and small traders. 'We will also look at control mechanisms in the context of ensuring that there are no leakages in this subsidy,' he told a press conference here yesterday. Earlier, Armizan attended the PPKB (Amendment) 2021 engagement session involving food and beverage traders' associations in Sabah to gather their views and feedback. Armizan said there was a need to ensure that no one took advantage of public subsidies. He revealed cases of large-scale purchases of subsidised LPG gas, with some being used at business premises while the rest were resold to parties involved in misappropriation. 'Therefore, we need to formulate control mechanisms,' he said. The ministry, he added, has also established a technical committee to review appropriate 'rakyat prices' for consumers, taking into account basic cost of living data to be released by the Statistics Department. Meanwhile, Armizan said that his ministry had summoned ice manufacturers and frozen food producers in Peninsular Malaysia to explain the basis for their recent price changes, effective tomorrow. The price hike was reported on social media recently. 'What is the basis, whether it is due to increased operating cost, raw material cost, or due to SST (Sale and Service Tax)? 'If it is due to SST, we will ask them to provide the basis and apply the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act,' Armizan added.

UMNO general assembly postponed to November due to Sabah polls
KUALA LUMPUR: The 2025 UMNO General Assembly, initially set for August 20–23, has been postponed to November 26–29 to allow the party to focus on the upcoming Sabah State Election. The decision was made during the UMNO Supreme Council meeting held at Menara Dato' Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki confirmed the postponement, stating that the move was necessary to ensure proper preparations for the Sabah polls. The Sabah State Legislative Assembly's term will automatically expire on November 11, triggering the 17th state election. The meeting, chaired by UMNO President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, was attended by Vice Presidents Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail and Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, along with other Supreme Council members. In addition to the assembly's postponement, the Supreme Council agreed to conduct a mid-term review of the Malaysian Unity Government's performance. This includes assessing UMNO's contributions within the administration and government-linked agencies. Asyraf Wajdi also clarified that UMNO discourages member absorption from other Unity Government component parties to maintain harmony. The meeting further decided that the Supreme Council may review disciplinary appeals from members under Clause 20.12 of the UMNO Constitution. The party also extended gratitude to the Terengganu and Perak UMNO Liaison Bodies for aiding victims of the June 10 Gerik bus crash, which killed 15 Sultan Idris Education University students.

Petronas identifies pipeline segments for review after Putra Heights gas explosion
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — Petronas has found more parts of its extensive underground gas pipeline system that could be vulnerable to the same issues which led to a powerful explosion in Putra Heights in April, authorities confirmed. Malaysia's Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) said yesterday, as reported by The Star, that the national oil and gas company had identified other pipeline segments with conditions resembling those at the Putra Heights site, prompting safety directives. 'We have given the directive following Petronas identifying the locations similar to the Putra Heights location,' said Husdin Che Amat, director of DOSH's Petroleum Safety Division, during a press conference at the Selangor state secretariat. While the exact locations were not disclosed, Husdin said the potentially affected areas are part of the 2,680km-long pipeline system that stretches from Kerteh to Segamat and to the borders with Singapore and Thailand, including a segment from Pengerang to Segamat. According to The Star, Husdin said discussions are under way with Petronas to determine both immediate and longer-term steps to address the issue and ensure public safety. The move comes in the wake of the April 1 blast in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya in Selangor where an underground gas leak triggered an explosion that damaged homes and injured residents. Yesterday, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari revealed at the same press conference that the explosion was caused by soil subsidence that happened over the years since it was laid in 2000, resulting in the pipe shifting by 15.9cm. 'The impact from the subsidence caused the pipe to move by 15.9cm and this was found after analysing samples from the pipe that showed signs of fatigue and stress lines on the structure,' he said. The report was prepared by the investigation team comprising several agencies and led by DOSH.
